Quote of the Day: Neil Patrick Harris

From this interview:

interviewer: I used to collect those little plastic [Smurf figurines].

NPH: I never really collected them. I was more of a burner. I’d entomb action figures in aluminum foil and then cook them—and open them up and see what it looked like afterwards. So I really loved Raiders of the Lost Ark, when their faces all melted at the end. That was cool.

interviewer:
Were you parents worried about this?

NPH:
No, we lived in a small town in New Mexico. As long as I wasn’t huffing gasoline in a paper bag, they were fine.

Good Start, Bad Finish

The UConn/Notre Dame game started pretty well, with (senior guard) Tiffany Hayes and (sophomore center) Stefanie Dolson playing very well.

Then it just..... all went south.

Similar to the January game against Notre Dame, UConn's offense disappeared late in the second half.

Coach Auriemma was so angry that he pulled his starters and conceded the game with 3:11 to play. Notre Dame was up by 13 at that point, their biggest lead of the night.

From episode 3.03:

Brian: Just give me one valid reason why any queer in his right mind would want to bring a kid into this world?

Umm...

Michael:
Wait a minute! Hold on. [Michael thinks for a moment.] To piss off straight people.

Five Questions

ESPN.com has archived Rebecca Lobo's "Five Questions" videos.

My favorite is definitely her interview with Geno Auriemma, mostly because of her delighted giggles at the end of the video.

There's also one with (my favorite player) Kelly Faris, from when she was a freshman.

Quote of the Day: Sports Night

From "The Apology" (1.02):

Casey:

Dana: I think it comes from reality.

Quote of the Day: Geno Auriemma

Sorry for another UConn quote, but Kelly Faris is my favorite player....

As quoted here:

About Kelly’s 8 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocked shots in the last game against Pittsburgh, Geno Auriemma said, “So…for all you geniuses who ask me why Kelly plays: Stick to your day job.”

More Storm Rumors

Jayda Evans reports that right after she posted the rumors about Tina Thompson joining the Storm, she started getting reports of Iziane Castro Marques returning to Seattle. "Izi" played for Seattle for several years, but has been with Atlanta since 2008. Jayda is skeptical, though, because she doesn't think there's room in the salary cap.

Swish Appeal suggests that adding Tina Thompson could help Seattle's three-point shooting, especially with Swin Cash gone and Lauren Jackson missing the first half of the season. In the comments to that article, someone points out that, "[Tina Thompson and other vets] no longer have national team obligations, so they’ll all essentially have a month break in midseason for the first time in their basketball lives. That should leave significantly more gas in their tanks for the playoffs." Jayda Evans also tweeted that she thinks Tina Thompson played so poorly last year because she was unhappy in LA, and might be more productive here. I'm still not sure we need two 37-year-old players, though.

In happier news, Svetlana Abrosimova -- currently playing in Russia with Sue Bird -- tweeted, "For all Uconn and Seattle fans!!!! Just want to let u all know that Sue Bird just had two amazing games in a row for UMMC!!!!"

Quote of the Day: Mechelle Voepel

ESPN.com's Mechelle Voepel discusses some candidates for coach of the year, including UConn's Geno Auriemma:

"Auriemma lost a three-time Wade Trophy winner in Maya Moore to graduation. His top returning scorer was Tiffany Hayes (13.7 ppg last season), who never really had to fill a leadership role before.

He has needed to run a four-guard offense much of the time because of personnel, and that has required convincing 5-foot-11 Kelly Faris to play like she's about five inches taller. Because Auriemma is such a good maestro, he has been able to pull this off. Of course, it also has a lot to do with recruiting the type of player who will not balk at being placed out of her comfort zone."

Breaking News!

My best friend had her second baby! Mother and daughter are doing fine. (Tired, but fine.)

In Storm land, the rumor is that WNBA legend Tina Thompson will be signing with the Storm. Not really sure how I feel about this. She didn't play well last season. But maybe coming off the bench (which I'm assuming she will do, just like Katie Smith did/will do) will help her make the most of her playing time. I am a little amused by this, though: If Thompson joins the Storm, then they will have four -- count them! -- FOUR #1 draft picks on the team: Thompson (1997), Ann Wauters (2000), Lauren Jackson (2001), and Sue Bird (2002). That's insane! Also insane? Tina Thompson, Katie Smith, and Lauren Jackson are #1, #3, and #4 on the all-time WNBA scoring list.

Quote of the Day: Leverage

From "The Nigerian Job" (1.01):

[The team has been betrayed...]

Eliot: I'm going to beat Dubenich so bad even the people that look like him are going to bleed.

Parker: You won't get within a hundred yards. He knows your face. He knows all our faces.

Eliot: He tried to kill us.

Parker:
More importantly, he didn't pay us.

Eliot:
How is that more important?!

Parker:
I take that personally.

Eliot: There's somethin' wrong with you.

[later...]

Eliot: What's in it for me?

Nate:
Payback. And if it goes right, a lot of money.

Parker:
And what's in it for me?

Nate:
A lot of money. And if it goes right, payback.

Quote of the Day: Swish Appeal

The big news in the WNBA today is that old-school point guard-extraordinaire Ticha Penicheiro signed with the Chicago Sky. Chicago, you may remember, is where Swin Cash and Le'coe Willingham got traded. It's also where point guard-of-the-future Courtney Vandersloot plays.

In the Swish Appeal article I linked above, there's a fun discussion in the comments about how awesome Chicago is going to be this year. Also, there was this suggestion:

Dear Sky:

Courtney Vandersloot wears #21.

Ticha Penicheiro has always worn #21.

There’s only one solution: best, most stylish, most accurate, most difficult, assist wins the number. Put the whole thing on tape. Profit.

I Am Sad

UConn lost to St. Johns yesterday. This loss ended their home-win streak at 99. The game wasn't televised nationally, so I don't know what happened exactly.

But here, look at the picture at the top of this article. Isn't that a great picture? Kelly Faris, perfectly horizontal to the court as she dives for a ball. Love it!

In happier news, the UW women beat Arizona today. They were behind for most of the game, but pulled ahead midway through the second half, and held onto the lead even though their two starting post players had fouled out.

I really wish Made in Canada was available on DVD.

Veronica:

Alan:
I just fired... [points] ...that guy that was just in here.

Veronica: Did you even know what he did?

Richard: Slacking off was what he did.

Victor: Big slacker; huge!

Veronica: Actually, he was my candidate for the new Human Resources Director.
But I don't think he's going to take the job, considering the fact that you just fired him.

Victor:
Human Resources Director?

Richard:
What do we need a Human Resources Director for?

Veronica:
To stop people from quitting.

Richard:
Well, firing them is one way.

Quote of the Day: Angel

From "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco" (5.06):

[For those of you who've never seen the show, "Fred" is short for "Winifred".]

Lorne:
Hey, professional opinion. Sexy soccer mama or brainy beauty? You're an aging sexpot celebrating a decade of turning twenty-nine. You got two little rugrats who aren't that little, a husband who thinks the extras trailer's a buffet table, and gravity ain't doing you any favors. So "Happy Birthday, sexy mama" or ...Fred! Fred, sweetie, you're sort of like a woman.

Fred: That's not a compliment.

Lorne:
Well, more so than El Cid here. I need some insight. You're an aging...

Fred:
I heard. Don't mention her birthday; don't send a card. Send a big bunch of flowers just because she's special and perfect and eternally bladiblah.

Lorne: Staring me right in the face. Genius!

Fred: And I'm a lot like a woman.

Lorne: You're all woman. You're every woman. You're Wonder Woman!

Fred:
Damn straight.

Lots of Storm News!

First and foremost: Sue Bird is officially a "finalist" to be on the 2012 Olympic team. This isn't surprising, but it is cool.

In signing news, Katie Smith has signed another one-year contract. I know she didn't have her best season last year, but I'm still happy to see her come back.

In trade news, the Storm traded Ashley Robinson to the Washington Mystics in exchange for Victoria Dunlap. I remember being impressed with then-rookie Dunlap when we played the Mystics last year, so I think this is a good move.

In draft news, Jayda Evans reports that Coach Agler plans on keeping the #2 pick. (Even though -- as Jayda has previously reported -- all the big name juniors-who-will-be-old-enough have explicitly stated that they plan to play their senior seasons.)

Quote of the Day: Geno Auriemma

As quoted in this article, talking about how he encourages his athletes to keep up their grades:

"I take a lot of pride in that, especially in this day and age when everyone is talking about that kind of stuff. I think it’s important to recognize there are a number of kids, all over the country, that do a great job trying to balance playing sports with academics. We take great pride in it here. In fact, we set up competitions. Our players are split into three groups. The [assistant] coaches draft them and as we go through the year, they are constantly checking on each other’s GPAs. At the end of the semester the winners get this, the losers get that. I don’t have a team. No one would want to be on my team. All of my assistants were good students. If I told my players what I did in college, none of them would win any prizes."

[The dean of Greendale Community College is filming a commercial for the school, and has gone bonkers. Annie is working as his assistant.]

Annie: The dean had his seventh epiphany today, which has given me an epiphany of my own: the dean is a genius. He has to be. If he isn't, then I've given almost two weeks of my life to an idiot; that is unacceptable. Therefore, the dean is a genius, and I will die protecting his vision.

Abed: Are you by any chance familiar with Stockholm syndrome?

Ugly Game

...Especially the second half.

UConn was at Louisville today. The first half was the usual sort of thing (UConn was up 33-17 at halftime), except for for PG Bria Hartley picking up two quick fouls and spending all but five minutes on the bench.

The second half, though... Eesh.

It got REALLY physical, really ugly. Rebecca Lobo tweeted "Uconn/Louisville game getting too physical. Something ugly is going to happen if these teams don't settle down." At one point UConn guard Caroline Doty had to get between UConn center Stefanie Dolson and Louisville center Sheronne Vails.

The announcers, who seemed to be aiming for a Louisville audience (despite the fact that this game aired on national TV), kept saying that Louisville had realized the only way they had a chance to win was to make it ugly.

Apparently they made it ugly in a way that made it look like UConn was making it ugly, because Louisville was in the bonus with 14:02 left in the half. (UConn didn't get there until 3:30 was left.)

The lead was cut to six at one point, but UConn held onto the lead, and won 56-46.

UConn guard Caroline Doty was definitely the player of the game. She seemed to be everywhere at once, and ended the game with 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, and 1 block. (All 15 points came from 3-pointers.) She didn't play at all last year because of a torn ACL (her third!), so it's great to see her playing so well.

The Storm Sign Ann Wauters

When the Storm traded away Swin Cash and Le'Coe Willingham, one of the names floating around as a potential pick-up was Ann Wauters.

In his "Grading the Trade" write-up, Richard Cohen wrote: "...Or a somewhat outside the box move like talking Belgian center Ann Wauters into actually showing up and eschewing San Antonio for the Pacific Northwest. Wauters is still a top-quality big, is currently playing with Lauren Jackson in Spain, and Agler’s shown a knack for bringing in talented international players in the past, so you never know."

Apparently she hasn't played in the WNBA since 2009 (not sure what happened in 2010, but in 2011 she had a baby) and she's one of those players I've heard of as a "gosh, wouldn't it be nice if she'd come back to the league" person.

And now she's back! The Storm just signed her for this summer. She's a post player like Lauren Jackson, so she'll help fill the gap when LJ's doing her Olympic duty. She's playing with LJ in Spain right now, so they should be a good tandem when the Olympics are over, too.

This is good news!!

The first I saw was actually the last: Pushing Daisies. Later I watched (on DVD) his oldest, Dead Like Me. Recently I (finally!) tracked down the one that came in between: Wonderfalls. (Thank you, Sno-Isle Library System!)

I'm really enjoying Wonderfalls, but it does make me miss Pushing Daisies.

I'm Glad I Didn't Turn the Game Off!

No, not THAT game.

The Washington @ USC women's basketball game!

The game started out really rough for the Huskies. In just a couple of minutes, USC had jumped out to a 9-0 lead. UW had no points and no rebounds. I told myself that if it was still that bad 10 minutes into the first half, I was going to fast-forward, and not watch the whole game.

But! The Huskies rallied, primarily behind the hustle of back-up post player Mollie Williams. Point guard Jazmine Davis picked up her offensive effort, eventually scoring 18 points in the first half!

UW caught up a couple of times, but USC kept pulling ahead again. At halftime USC was ahead by three. In the second half, USC was ahead by as much as nine, but they could never pull away completely; UW stuck with them. Late in the second half, the Huskies tied the game up, and eventually pulled ahead! With less than a minute to go, USC was forced to start fouling, but the Washington players were making their free throws. Even when Mollie Williams (I think it was her) missed one, Regina Rogers grabbed the rebound and got the put-back.

In the end, Washington held on to win 67-61.
