Quote of the Day: Pet Shop Boys

I'm at my parent's house, helping prepare for a garage sale tomorrow. I've had the song "Opportunities" running through my head for the last several hours:

I've got the brains, you've got the looks
Let's make lots of money
You've got the brawn, I've got the brains
Let's make lots of money

Day 30

Question 30: Convince all your readers to watch Farscape!

I wouldn't say that it's the best show in the history of television, but I think it was the best show in the history of television for me. It was if the television gods said, "Let's make a TV show just for Maggie. It will need to be a scifi show with lots of aliens and amazing world-building. But it needs to have drama, too. Beautiful, heart-breaking drama. It can't just be action all the time. But it needs some action! Some totally bad-ass moments and incredible space battles. And there should be an epic romance between two fully-formed, adult characters. And to top it all off, it needs to be funny. Jokes, pop culture references, surreal situations, and more! And that will be a television show she will love forever."

Mary: She was the only person living who always thought you and I were such nice people.

Mary: I doubt it.

Quote of the Day: traffic reporter on the radio

On my way home from work today I heard a traffic report on the radio. I'm not sure what channel it was on (Star 101.5, maybe?), but it made me laugh:

Quote of the Day: Elementary

From "Heroine" (1.24):

[Holmes has been shot; Watson is sewing up his wound.]

Watson: This is stupid. You should be in the hospital right now.

Holmes: I told you, there isn't time. Besides, what's the point of living with a former surgeon if she can't stitch the occasional wound up?

Watson: The muscle in your shoulder is shredded, ok? You need to be treated for the pain.

Holmes: May I remind you I'm a recovering drug addict?

Watson: May I remind you there is such a thing as non-addictive pain killers?

Holmes: How good can they be if they're non-addictive?

Hopefully the Storm's season opener in LA is not a harbinger of the rest of the season. The first quarter was ok, but then it gradually got worse and worse. I still haven't watched the last quarter, and the 102-69 final score isn't making me want to....

Storm Season Begins Tomorrow

From WNBAlien's Seattle Storm preview:

Significant gains: Temeka Johnson, Noelle Quinn, Tianna Hawkins.

Significant losses: Lauren Jackson, Sue Bird, Katie Smith, Ann Wauters (plus Ewelina Kobryn and Svetlana Abrosimova aren’t coming back either). Yeah, ouch.

Jayda Evans checks in with Lauren Jackson:

An Australian native, Storm center Lauren Jackson is already an ocean way. One click on her WNBA team's website made the distance feel farther.

"I saw they were at Stormin' the Lake," Jackson said of photos from the annual meet-and-greet with fans at Green Lake. "I was like, aw, I was on that team a couple of years ago doing the water-balloon toss."

Doug Feinberg (AP writer) checks in with Sue Bird:

Having some free time also means Bird can spend time with her young niece Zoe, who was born in February.

"This has been a bright side," Bird said. "She's 3½-four months. We hang around. Can't do much with her. Basically we both just sit on the couch. It's neat to be around her and watch her grow. She's going to be a guard."

Quote of the Day: "Mark Watches"

In a post about the Dead Like Me episode "In Escrow", Mark tells his favorite stories from when he was a hiring manager at Hot Topic:

The winner, though? A frequent customer of the store who we all suspected of being a shoplifter applied for a job, and surprisingly, he had good references and a decent amount of experience. My boss thought it was worth a shot to at least see what he was like. He was personable and kind, and he had fantastic knowledge of what Hot Topic sold. I kind of liked him, despite that I went into the interview not wanting to like him.

I finally asked him what he thought he’d bring to our store if we hired him. He smiled confidently, leaned forward, and said that it would be totally worth it for us to hire him because then he could stop stealing from us. Confused (but slightly curious), I did my best not to react much to what he’d just said, so I asked him what he meant by that. And he told me that if he got a job at our store, he’d take advantage of the employee discount so he wouldn’t feel so bad about spending money at the store. “You know,” he said, “so I don’t go broke buying stuff there.” When I asked for clarification about what exactly he would buy, he opened his backpack to show me a collection of t-shirts and Lord of the Rings merchandise that he had stolen just before his interview, and he explained that we’d make so much more money from him if we just hired him.

I excitedly told him that this seemed like a great idea and excused myself, telling him that I would go get my other manager to interview him right then, as he clearly was the right candidate for us. So, as he sat there, smug and pleased with his chances, I walked straight to mall security, explained what was going on, and then the Downey police showed up, and he got arrested in the food court, and the guy didn’t say a single word to me.

I cannot make this shit up, y’all. I can’t.

Quote of the Day: BuzzFeed

From 11 Reasons "Xena: Warrior Princess" Is Better Than "Game Of Thrones":

3. Xena is a delicious variety pack of historical periods.

Game of Thrones is rooted in one time period: a sort of gritty medieval version of 80s kids’ TV show Knightmare (but with more incest and fewer geeky 11 year olds). Xena, on the other hand, isn’t restricted at all. One week she’s fighting in the Trojan War, the next she’s being crucified by Julius Caesar. Does she have a time machine? No. The writers didn’t have Wikipedia in the ’90s so they couldn’t check their facts.

Kevin Pelton offers advice on How To Enjoy the 2013 Storm Season:

4. Enjoy the Development of Young Players

The most meaningful aspect of the 2013 season in the long run will be the progress [Shekinna] Stricklen makes in her second year and [Tianna] Hawkins makes as a rookie. With Stricklen playing heavier minutes than last season and Hawkins as part of the rotation off the bench, there will be some ups and downs. During the National Championship game on 4/9/13, ESPN reporter Holly Rowe interviewed UConn coach Geno Auriemma during the second half, when UConn was ahead of Louisville by 19 points:

Holly Rowe: Coach, a few minutes ago you gave kind of a recipe in the huddle, to not allow a comeback: no three's, no second-chance points, and no fouls. How are they doing so far in that?

Geno Auriemma:
We're doing great down there [on the defensive end]. What I forgot to tell them is: pass the ball to my guys. And stop throwing the ball away. It's unbelievable what we've just done in the last five minutes. I don't even know what to say; I'm speechless!

Holly Rowe: That never happens! Coach, tell me how you can get Breanna Stewart even more touches down the stretch. She seems like she's in such a good place.

Geno Auriemma: We can't get her touches because we ... We don't have any ... We can't run offenses because we're throwing the ball to the other team!

Day 12

By the way... Today I noticed that I started this on May 1st, so "Day 1" was 5/1, "Day 2" was 5/2. That was completely unintentional, but worked out really well!

Question 12: Overall favorite moment/scene?

This is kind of a weird question, and a little redundant. I mean, shouldn't I pick one of the ones I already mentioned? But that just feels repetitive. Hmmmm... How about some moments I almost picked for the last few days:

In "Premiere" (1.01), when Crais catches up with Aeryn and Crichton, and they automatically work together to try to protect each other from him.

In "The Flax" (1.13), when Aeryn and Crichton think they're going to die and they discuss their cultures' views of the afterlife.

Many, many moments in "A Human Reaction" (1.16), including: Aeryn in the rain, Crichton being interrogated in different languages, Crichton choosing his friends over the humans, Aeryn wondering why people are staring at her, Aeryn pulling a gun on John's father, and more.

In "A Bug's Life" (1.18) when the crew and the Peacekeeper commandos that they were trying to fool are standing in a circle, pointing their guns at each other, and Zhaan called Crichton "John", and the Peacekeepers realized that they've been played.

The end of "Family Ties" (1.22), when D'Argo and Crichton are floating in space, and Aeryn can't rescue them.

In "Taking the Stone" (2.03), when Crichton tells Aeyrn to be nice, and she says "I'm not good at 'nice'."

Everyone going crazy in "Crackers Don't Matter" (2.04).

Basically the entire episode of "Out of their Minds" (2.09).

In "Suns and Lovers" (2.02), when Crichton hears stories of him and the rest of the crew, and realizes that they're becoming legends in the Uncharted Territories.

Zhaan's good-byes in "Self-Inflicted Wounds, part 2: Wait for the Wheel" (3.04).

Aeryn pretending that Zhaan is speaking through her in "Meltdown" (3.12).

Crichton hallucinating in cartoon form in "Revenging Angel" (3.16) and Aeryn giving him grief for how he's imagining her.

Crichton testing the Yensch bracelets in "Into the Lion's Den, part 1: Lambs to the Slaughter" (3.20) by having Aeryn nearly break his finger.

Crichton being batshit crazy in "Crichton Kicks" (4.01).

In "A Prefect Murder" (4.09), mind-controlled Crichton and Aeryn shoot at each other and miss. She warns that she doesn't think she can resist enough to miss a second time. He says he think he's just a bad shot.

In "Twice Shy" (4.14), when Crichton finally tells Aeryn that he's been pretending not to love her to protect her from Scorpius.

In "Bringing Home the Beacon" (4.16), Crichton realized Aeryn isn't Aeryn and shoots the fake.

In "We're So Screwed, part 3: La Bomba" (4.21), Crichton and Aeryn dancing in the elevator.

In "The Peacekeeper Wars", Aeryn wanting a gun to shoot while she's in labor, because shooting makes her feel better.

Day 11

Question 11: Favorite "Peacekeeper Wars" moment?

This bit, right at the beginning of the miniseries.

See, there was supposed to be five seasons of Farscape. SciFi promised that there would be. And then, when the Farscape crew was filming the end of season four, SciFi changed their minds. (To get out of this, they labelled the first half of the season as "season four" and the second half as "season five". This numbering system appears absolutely nowhere else -- not in episode guides, not on the DVDs, no where.)

The makers of Farscape -- as was their wont -- had written a giant cliffhanger for the end of season four. When they found out they were cancelled, they had a choice: they could leave it as is, or they could rewrite it to give a happy ending. They stuck with the cliffhanger.

Season four ends like this: Crichton proposes to Aeryn, Aeryn accepts, bad guys show up and shoot them with weird space guns, they crumble into little tiny chunks. "To be continued...."

It was so heart-breaking that when I would re-watch Farscape, I would actually turn off the DVD after Aeryn says yes.

Farscape fans managed to get a mini-series made to tie up the loose ends. It begins with Crichton and Aeryn being brought back to life, two months later.

So that's reason #1 why I love this scene. #2 is the synchronized guns. #3 is this conversation:

Crichton: You said yes!

Aeryn: I did?

Crichton: Sixty days, any regrets?

Aeryn: No, it's going really well.

Quote of the Day: Swish Appeal

From Some hypothetical best case and worst case scenarios for WNBA Western Conference teams in 2013:

Seattle Storm

Best Case Scenario - The Storm sees Shekinna Stricklen play significant minutes as its number one perimeter option and she wins Most Improved Player of the year. In addition, Tianna Hawkins plays significant minutes, if not being a starting post player outright, and perhaps she plays next to Camille Little. Temeka Johnson and Tanisha Wright hold their own as the team's floor generals. Seattle ends up missing the playoffs, but fights its way to being the 5th place team in the conference (hopefully between 10-15 wins and plays competitively). Tina Thompson remains an effective player and mentor to Hawkins and Stricklen and doesn't complain about playing off the bench if that's what she's asked to do.

Finally for the 2014 Draft Lottery, Seattle gets the number 1 pick. Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson come back healthy and see that there are legitimate young pieces who can be part of a contending Storm team for years to come after they retire with those young pieces being Stricklen, Hawkins, and the number one pick.

Worst Case Scenario -
I don't see any scenario where Shekinna Stricklen isn't starting, but for Hawkins, she ends up being the 2012 version of Natalie Novosel for the Storm even if Nakia Sanford, Camille Little, and Tina Thompson aren't playing well at all and if the Storm ends up winning games at a sub 25% rate.

The Storm ends up with a 5 to 8 win record and even in a situation like this when the playoffs are out of reach with half the season left to go, in the worst case scenario, we continue to see younger players who make this team, in particular Hawkins not playing considering that she does come to the pros as a great rebounder... Brian Agler may even lose his job in the process if this happens.

Day 10

Question 10: Favorite season 4 moment?

In the very first episode (called the "premiere", rather than the "pilot", presumably because one of the main characters is called Pilot), when Crichton and Aeryn meet for the very first time, she easily bests him in a fight. Their characters are established very clearly: he's the scientist, and she's the soldier.

As the series progresses, she becomes more comfortable thinking her way out of problems, and he learns how to fight.

In the episode "Unrealized Reality" (4.11), Crichton travels to an alternate reality where he is put back in the same moment where he first met Aeryn. This time he's ready for her, and he uses his new skills to hold his own against her ... for a few seconds. She still kicks his butt.

Quote of the Day: John Walters

I've quoted John Walters many, many times from his book The Same River Twice. This quote is actually from a recent article he wrote.

I spent a year with the UConn program in 2000-2001 and nothing about Coach Auriemma struck me more sharply than this: far more than he understands basketball, Geno Auriemma understands people. Understands human nature. He also demonstrates to his players in quieter moments, and this is almost never discussed, that they are a family.

In the year that I was there the Husky roster had five current or future first-team All-Americans: Svetlana Abrosimova, Shea Ralph, Diana Taurasi, Swin Cash and Sue Bird. When they went to the mall, they were mobbed for autographs; when they stepped onto the Gampel court for practice, they were insecure young women (well, okay, Taurasi and Bird were never that) who craved Geno’s approval.

A quick story: We were sitting around late one night in Seattle, after a road win at Washington. Geno, an assistant coach or two, myself, and a few more adults in the traveling party. The topic was that of two players, both starters, Asjha Jones and Swin Cash. Both had been injured and while sitting out a third player had entrenched herself as a starter. As a result either Asjha or Swin would now be relegated to the bench. Both players returned to practice on the same day.

Geno wanted five starters on the court to run his offense, but instead of naming who he wanted, he simply said, “Give me the starters on the floor.”

Asjha hesitated, and Swin, a far more aggressive person, took that opportunity of hesitation to run out on the court.

“Now,” Geno asked us, “Who decided that Swin would start ahead of Asjha?”

“Asjha did,” I said.

“Exactly,” answered Geno. His point: He wanted the young lady on the floor who most wanted to be the starter to start. In a battle between two forwards who were relatively evenly matched, he wanted the player who was more confident.

yes, I know what time it is
in fact, I just checked
I even know the date
and the month
and the year
I know i haven't been sleeping
and when I do
I just dream of you, dear

I miss watching you
drool on your pillow
I miss watching you
pull on your clothes
I miss listening
to you in the bathroom
flushing the toilet
blowing your nose

I'm calling from the diner
the diner on the corner
I ordered two coffees
one is for you
the cups are so close
that the steam is rising
in one stream

I think you're the least fucked up
person I've ever met
and that may be as close to the real thing
as I'm ever gonna get
but my quarter's gonna run out now
or so I'm told
so I guess I'd better go sit down
and wait for you
till my coffee gets cold

What's wrong with "Doctor Who"?

The first half of last Saturday's Doctor Who episode ("The Crimson Horror") was the best I'd seen since Amy & Rory left. The problem with that is that neither The Doctor nor Clara appeared in the first half of that episode. It was all Madame Vastra, Jenny, and Strax investigating.

I've really been struggling to enjoy Doctor Who since Clara arrived, and I wasn't sure if I was just getting burned out, or if I didn't like Clara, or the general writing style, or what. "The Crimson Horror" made me think it's probably a combination of Clara, the way The Doctor's being written right now, and the interactions between Clara and The Doctor.

It's not just me, either. I've started seeing articles/recaps talking about the problems with the current run of Doctor Who episodes. For instance, this recap of "The Crimson Horror" begins: "It says a lot of things, none of them good, when, after a good twenty minutes of episode without the Doctor, I get vaguely disappointed that he’s finally shown up and now the episode is going to revolve around him."

This article flat out asks "What is wrong with Doctor Who"? I disagree with their criticism of Sherlock, but I think they make some very good points about how the balance between Doctor and companion has shifted in the Steven Moffat era.

Recently BBC-America aired one of their Doctor Who specials, and they had people talking about what they liked about the various companions. Rose, Martha, and Donna (all from the Russell T Davies era), were described by what they did and said. Amy (first in the Moffat era) was glorified for her looks alone. Now, her hair is VERY pretty, but shouldn't she be more than that? Amy eventually grew on me, but mostly because I enjoyed the Rory-and-Amy dynamic. Clara is just .... blah. She doesn't seem to have much personality at all, and I don't feel like I know her. In "Rose", "Smith & Jones", and "The Runaway Bride" -- the first episodes for Rose, Martha, and Donna -- I felt like I already understood who they were. But Clara's been around for six episodes (or eight, if you count the other versions of her that were in "Asylum of the Daleks" and "The Snowmen") and I still have no idea who she is. She's good with kids... I guess? She's a little feisty.... sort of?

This Tumblr post is scathing of Steven Moffat, and I don't agree with it all, but there's still plenty I think they got right.

River Song is a Moffat creation, and I didn't like her, then I loved her, and then her story pretty much stunk to high heaven. Actually, her death (when she first appeared) stunk to high heaven, too. But between her initial appearance in season four and the end of season six, she was WONDERFUL. And then she wasn't.

Bah. I want my awesome Doctor Who back!

Day 6

Question 6: Favorite bad guy?

Well, I just named two of the main bad guys as my least favorite characters, so I guess they're out!

Let's see...

I think I'd have to pick the Nebari. Not Chiana, of course, but all the creepy Nebari that we meet. They sound calm and reasonable, but they want to forcibly drug you until you're calm and reasonable, too.

Quote of the Day: Tumblr

Seen here:

"If I make you breakfast in bed, a simple 'Thank You' will suffice. None of this 'How did you get in my house' business. So rude."

Day 5

Question 5: Least favorite female character?

Commandant Grayza. I guess I just don't like villains in general. Plus, as Crichton's nickname for her suggests ("Commandant Cleavage") she wore these ridiculously low cut outfits, which didn't make any sense for a military leader.

Quote of the Day: Elementary

From "The Leviathan" (1.10):

Holmes: I suppose being proven right is the best gift of all. There was no genius who independently cracked the code of The Leviathan. It was a question of copying the original team.

Watson: So that means you still might be the smartest person in the world.

Holmes: I would never suggest that.

Watson: Really? I think that's the first time I've ever heard you say anything remotely modest.

Holmes: That's not modesty. There's just no reliable way to test the hypothesis.

Day 4

Question 4: Least favorite male character?

Hmmm.... There's probably some random one-off character I disliked more, but in terms of a regular, I'd have to say Scorpius. Most fans seem to love-to-hate him and think he's a great villain, but I never really liked him.

Storm Training Camp Begins Tomorrow

The roster could use some editing -- it lists both Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson.

Jayda Evans reports:

"We've played a lot of games without Lauren," Agler said of the franchise's leading scorer, who has played just 22 games the past two seasons due to the Olympics and injuries. "We haven't played as many without Sue, so that will be a new experience for us. But we're going to start training camp with a group of people I feel can be competitive."

Quote of the Day: Veronica Mars

From "A Trip to the Dentist" (1.21):

[Veronica finds Madison in the girls bathroom, looking at herself in the mirror.]

Veronica: You can keep asking, but you're not the fairest. Trust me.

Madison: Well, I can tell you who the pastiest is. What's the deal - can't buy bronzer with food stamps?

Veronica: You wrote "slut" on my car last year at Shelly's party. Why?

Madison: Because "whore" had too many letters.

Quote of the Day: Jim Beaver

He played Bobby on Supernatural. Recently he tweeted about being picked up at the airport:

Car service guy was 30 minutes late picking me up at LAX. He texted me before he got there, asking, "What are you wearing?" "A frown," I texted back. He found me.

Quote of the Day: Jon Stewart

From The Daily Show of 4/30/13:

"It's a pretty great day for major league sports. At long last, they've decided that gay people are fit to be included in their elite club. One that's already allowed in: adulterers, wife swappers, gamblers, cheaters, rapists, racists, and slaughterers of man. Those who've abused spouses, drugs, alcohol, family members, and animals. Yes, at long last, homosexuality is no longer a bar to a profession where you can already get away with: choking your boss, texting your dick to a coworker, and throwing lit firecrackers into crowds of children. Congratulations, gay athletes. [pause] You sure you want to hang around with these f&$%ing people?"

30 Days of Farscape Challenge: Day 1

I've been re-watching Battlestar Galactica, so naturally I've been thinking about Farscape. (My brain is weird.) And, hey! Look what I found:

Question 1: How you found Farscape:

Farscape premiered when I was living in Eugene and didn't get the SciFi channel. SciFi premiered a couple shows at the same time, and I remember reading a TV Guide review of all of them. Farscape sounded the most interesting and (according to the reviewer) was the best of them.

By the time I moved back to Washington (and started getting the SciFi channel), I'd forgotten about it. But one day I came across an episode ("A Bug's Life", which is a REALLY strange episode to start with) and I looooved it.

CL: "Hey, I'm a big fan."

Me: "Thanks."

CL: "I need to see your ID."
