Breaking News: Tulsa Is an Awful Team

And thank goodness for that! After the Minnesota game, Seattle needed to beat on someone. Tulsa let Sue Bird have her way, and her way was 29 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals.

Whew!

This brings road-trip-month (aka "July") to a close, and now we begin home-game-month. That should help our record!

By the way, WNBA.com has "first half assessments" for the teams. Here's the Storm's.

Bucky: Don't worry about me, Robbo. I wasn't born yesterday.

Rob: Sometimes I wonder...

Bucky: Hey, I can remember back a good three or four days at least. In fact, yesterday is particularly vivid, and no birth.

Quote of the Day: Richard Cohen

From today's column (about yesterday's games):

"To close things out for the night, Chicago took a trip to Oklahoma to face the Tulsa Shock. Considering I’ve been pushing this decreasing-scores theme, I’m sure you can take a stab at just how wonderful this game was to watch. Yeah, not one for fans of offense. Or scoring in general. Or basketball, if I’m honest."

Oh. You Again.

Yes, that's right. After a couple games with the 2010 Storm, the 2011 Storm came back with a vengeance tonight. Granted, they were playing Minnesota (owners of the best record in the league), but aside from the first half of the first quarter, they looked miserable, confused, and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Sigh.

Weirdness: Camille Little played the first four minutes, and then spend the rest of the game on the bench. Not sure what that was about.

As Sue Bird's hair tweeted during the game: "I know I'm magical, but these luscious locks can't even fix this."

No Game Today

Tomorrow the Storm play Minnesota. In Minnesota. To say I'm nervous would be an understatement!

So, let's think of happier things.

Jayda Evans gives the Storm players a mid-season report card. (Spoiler: Sue Bird gets an A!)

Swin Cash writes about the All-Star Game. She also posted a couple of pictures on her Twitter. This one is of the UConn players. I think Sue Bird and Maya Moore do the best job of dressing for their body types. This picture is of a group of WNBA players/coaches who went to church together. I don't recognize everybody, but I spot Maya Moore (UConn/Minnesota), Jenny Boucek (Seattle Storm assistant coach), Swin Cash, Tina Charles (UConn/Connecticut), Tamika Catchings (Tennessee/Indiana), Ruth Riley (Notre Dame/San Antonio), Becky Hammon (Colorado State/San Antonio), and Renee Montgomery (UConn/Connecticut). And yes, I knew all their colleges/teams off the top of my head.

I don't think I've ever posted this before. It's from the 2005 All-Star Game:

Speaking of Geno's restaurant, Rebecca Lobo tweeted this picture a while back.

Nowadays, Diana Taurasi hazes the rookies. But in 2001, she was the freshman:

[After a snowstorm] the plane lands in Hartford, the only cause of distress is from Diana Taurasi. She won a Woody the Woodpecker stuffed animal at Dave & Buster's and, as she napped during the trip, someone absconded with it.

"Where's Woody?" she yawns, searching the overhead compartment. "Where's Woody?"

Svetlana Abrosimova stands up across the aisle from Diana. "Items overhead tend to shift during flight," she says with a grin.

Aside from Of Another Fashion, I don't regularly visit Tumblr. That may have to change, because I really like i bleed white & blue. She's a big Sue Bird fan! Her Twitter account's pretty good, too. She also linked to another Tumblr that had this great poster.

i bleed white & blue also posted this great video (from the Beijing Olympics, I assume) of the basketball and soccer teams hanging out:

This just in: Liz Cambage is an adorable giant.

We Needed That!

This season the Storm have been schizophrenic. At home: 6-1. Away: 2-6. And those two "away" wins were against Tulsa (1-15) and Washington (3-12).

Tonight, they were in it right from the beginning. In the second quarter Phoenix built a lead, but Seattle got back within three by halftime, and in the third quarter Seattle pulled ahead. Phoenix fought back in the fourth, but Seattle held onto the win (helped by Camille Little's clutch steal and layup with less than a minute to go).

Seattle wins by six!!!
They held high-scoring Phoenix to under 80 -- just the third time Phoenix has scored less than 80 all season.

Good game!

It was great to see them carry the momentum from the San Antonio game onto the road.

Jodie: No, I've learned that my parents would rather I dropped from exhaustion than missed the opportunity to shred some congressman's incriminating phone bills.

So says Tamika Catchings, after Swin Cash won the MVP of the All-Star game, even though she was on the losing team!

"Catch" has a point, but Swin Cash led all scorers with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

It was a close game, too, with the teams within a few points of each other for the entire game.

Courtney Vandersloot acquitted herself well, scoring eight points in thirteen minutes of playing time. Go Sloot!

As expected, Sue Bird, Lauren Jackson, and Katie Smith were all voted "Top 15".

Jana Vesela

If you clicked the link from my quote-of-the-day, and read the whole article (or scrolled down to the bottom), you would have seen that I submitted a comment about Jana Vesela.

I wrote the comment because, in his discussion about players being waived, he wrote: "In Storm fans’ dreams, the eventual 11th player would be Svetlana Abrosimova, their first guard off the bench last year when they strolled to a championship. Signing Svet later in the season was always an option, and I’m sure Agler would be very open to it, but Svet would have to be interested. As far as I know she’s still resting after her endeavours for Russia in EuroBasket Women, helping them win that tournament and qualify for the Olympics, despite playing most of it out of position at point guard. I’m not sure she’ll fancy dragging herself back out on the floor so soon to help out Seattle."

My comment was: "Re: Storm’s 11th player… I would love to see Svet come back, but assuming she’s not an option, I’m hoping for a return of Jana Vesela. She’s 6’4″, can shoot three-pointers, and by the end of last season she was working well in the system."

He replied (quickly!) but had bad news:

"Vesela’s even less likely, I’m afraid. Svet at least has a long-standing relationship with the US, after college and many years in the WNBA, and reportedly has to spend time there each year to keep her visa valid. I don’t think Vesela was too enthused about spending so much time sitting around on Seattle’s bench, and was pretty definitive about not wanting to play this season in the WNBA, last I heard. 2012 was supposed to be a maybe, but with the Czechs having to play in the pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament, I wouldn’t expect to see her until after the Games if at all. Shame Jana’s not around, because she would’ve got to play much more this year with LJ out. They could’ve used her size."

Quote of the Day: Richard Cohen

From today's post, which included a discussion about players waived yesterday:

Tulsa/Washington

Washington technically haven’t announced anything today, hence they don’t get their own section. Still, news drifted out of Tulsa that they’d waived recent pickup Doneeka Lewis, and various press outlets are reporting that they’ve signed Karima Christmas as her replacement. Probably the first time I’ve ever heard of someone being signed by a WNBA team before I’d even heard they were released by their previous franchise. It makes perfect sense that the two teams involved are Washington and Tulsa, who’ve both been an organisational mess in recent times.

For Tulsa it makes sense [...]

For Washington, who knows what the hell’s going on. It might mean that Alana Beard is finally on the edge of making a return, which would require ending Kerri Gardin’s emergency hardship contract, and they want to retain Gardin in the spot that’s now opened up by releasing Christmas. It might mean there’s someone else Lacey wants to bring in. It might mean they forgot how many players they’re supposed to have on the roster. At this point, I’d believe practically anything.

Great Game!

The Storm won! And in a serious, we're-not-kidding way! San Antonio only scored 55 points. The whole Storm team was hustling for the whole game. Lots of good rebounds and saving-the-ball-from-going-out-of-bounds. Tanisha Wright had three steals in the first two minutes of the third quarter. A-Rob had another strong game. (My favorite play of hers was when she jumped high in the air, stretched out her long, long arms, and stole a high pass between two San Antonio players. And, perhaps best of all, they got the win with Sue Bird dishing seven assists, but only playing 23 minutes and scoring two points.

Despite the lead in the fourth quarter, Krystal Thomas never played. When I got home, I found out that she had been dropped by the Storm. No word on who will replace her, but the deadline is soon (maybe today?). I'm hoping for Jana Vesela, of course!

In other news, Jayda Evans (of the Seattle Times) recently wrote an article suggesting that Katie Smith was a bad trade for Seattle. Then in her liveblog of tonight's game, she wondered, "How do you eat words printed on the web? Well, I'm virtually chomping down, G Katie Smith having a good night off the bench. She has eight points on 3-for-4 shooting from the field. The Storm leads 60-35 with 8:38 left in the game."

Guess Who Came Into the Store?

At work today, I was talking to a co-worker when I suddenly spotted Tully Bevilaqua! She played for the Storm during the 2004 championship run, and she currently plays for the San Antonio Silver Stars. (They're in town to play Seattle tomorrow night.)

I went over to meet her (basically, I said, "Hi! I know who you are! I'm a big Storm fan!") and she was very nice. Shorter than I expected (the WNBA claims she's 5'7", but Wikipedia reports that the WNBL lists her as 5'5" -- I think I believe the Australians) but very muscular. If I didn't know she as a professional athlete, I might have thought she was a Marine!

Definitely the highlight of my day!

0-3 for the Road Trip

In a way, today's loss was the hardest of the season. But for me, I'm actually ok with it. (Or, as ok with it as I can be.)

Sue Bird had a great game (especially in the second half). Swin Cash was pretty solid. And Ashley Robinson (Ashley Robinson!!!) had a career game. With any luck she can continue that level of play into the rest of the season.

It also helped that Courtney Vandersloot had a good game (and was named as an All Star reserve!). That took a bit of the sting off!

About the Seattle/Minnesota game from yesterday:

"Unfortunately for Seattle, not only were they still without LJ, but her frontcourt partner Camille Little was missing for this game as well ‘dealing with a personal matter’. So even when they weren’t involved in the game, LA were making things difficult for the rival Storm."

Another Heartbreaker

Camille Little was gone because of a personal matter (which left 6'1" Swin Cash to do the jump ball!), but the Storm managed to stay close to Minnesota through the first quarter. A Disappointing Ending

Last night's game against San Antonio was a heart-breaker. (For Storm fans, anyway.)

So close!

As Richard Cohen says, "Ugly game for Seattle, but on the bright side at least they were in it. Bird couldn’t hit anything, they had no interior game at all, Cash was poor and they went a miserable 7-16 from the free throw line – but lost by just three on the road."

In better news, Sue Bird and Swin Cash were both voted to be starters in the All-Star Game.

Four of the West's starters are UConn graduates, and one of the East's starters. That's half! That's insane. Someone over at Swish Appeal pointed out that UConn "looks like they are the only college who could field an entire WNBA team, [and that team] would not only win the title, but could dominate the league."

Quote of the Day: Richard Cohen

From his post for 7/10/11, about Saturday's L.A. @ Seattle game:

"Nonetheless, LA got off to a strong start. Lavender was providing some bulk inside and grabbing some rebounds, two things that have been lacking from LA since Candace Parker went down. Seattle’s offense looked dubious as it has on several occasions this season, and LA’s newly formed starting lineup managed to build a 17-11 lead with a couple of minutes left in the first. That was around when I made that tweet I already mentioned (you can follow me here, if you feel like it). You see, LA’s perimeter defense is awful. It has been for years. Their transition defense it also terrible. And with Parker gone, their interior defense leaves a fair bit to be desired too. You can see where I’m going here."

Bonus quote from the same post:

"When Katie Smith hit a three of her own early in the fourth, the roof practically came off Key Arena and the Storm were away. Smith’s shooting has been horribly cold all year, she knows it and so did every fan in that place, so there was immense pleasure and relief when that shot dropped. By the time she hit another from outside only a couple of minutes later, Seattle were up 82-66 and the game was done and dusted."

It's Firing Time!

Two WNBA coaches got fired this week. (Not ours, of course!)

Neither really surprised me.

Technically, Tulsa coach Nolan Richardson resigned, but... Tulsa's the worst team in the league for the second year in a row. Their record at the time of his "resigning" was 1-10.

Tonight's firing was of L.A. coach Jennifer Gillom. L.A.'s winless on the road this year and decided to "fix" that problem at last night's game by benching two of the best players the league has ever seen. So, no surprise there, either.

Tomorrow, vs. L.A.

The Polish chick (Ewelina Kobryn) has finally had a chance to practice with the team, so hopefully she'll be able to contribute.

I remember reading during the 2010 Finals that Le'Coe Willingham was in an elite group of WNBA players that had gone to the Finals with three different teams. (Only one or two other players had done it.) Seattle and Phoenix, obviously, since they were the teams she won her championships with, but the other was Connecticut. A local Connecticut paper had a nice interview with her.

Speaking of Le'Coe, at tomorrow's game against L.A. she'll be matched up against Ebony Hoffman, who's starting in place of injured star Candace Parker. From the Storm's preview of the game: "Hoffman and the Storm's Le'coe Willingham matched up as power forwards during the 2009 WNBA Finals, when Willingham's Mercury got the better of Hoffman's Fever. Now, both players are filling in at center."

Q.

Sam:
Yeah. Why do I hate Q so much?

Carly: 'Cause it's so obviously just an O trying to be all fancy with its pointless little tail.

Sam: Q's pathetic.

Quote of the Day: Red vs. Blue

From season four:

Sarge: Regroup, men! Grif, start passing out additional ammo!

Grif: Uh...

Sarge:
Simmons! Pass out the ammo you brought because you knew Grif would forget!

Simmons: Already on it, sir!

Yeesh!

Drat.

I actually didn't see the game. (Which may be for the best.) I had my LiveAccess set on "show scores", so I saw that Indiana had won before I started watching the game. Then I was sad, so I couldn't really bear to watch.

I guess Iris and I will have to cheer extra-loud at Saturday's game!

In happier news, Swin Cash was name Western Conference Player-of-the-Week.

Quote of the Day: Rick Mercer

From the Rick Mercer Report airing October 3, 2006:

"Good evening, I'm Rick Mercer, and this is the Mercer Report. This week I kick off a brand new season with a trip out west to practice with the [Canadian Football League team] Saskatchewan Roughriders and fulfill a childhood dream of getting some x-rays done in Regina. Also on the show, I go window-washing on a sixty-eight story building. Now, I don't want to give away how it ends, but...I fall to my death. All that and a lot more on tonight's show!"

Quote of the Day: Daria

From "It Happened One Nut" (3.06):

Mr. DeMartino: My congratulations [on the career aptitude test], Miss Lane. You've done it again.

Jane: [to Daria] Perfect record. I've gotten the same thing three years in a row.

Daria:
Accountant?

Jane: That's what happens when you fill in the letter "C" for every answer. Gets the whole test over within five minutes.

At Least They Won that One!

Today the Storm played the second-worst team in the league. The Washington Mystics were missing three of their star players. If the Storm couldn't beat them, well.... that would be embarrassing.

But they won! And their offense was looking better. Katie Smith still can't hit the broad side of a barn, but Tanisha Wright was driving to the basket and generally being more aggressive, so that helped a lot. (Washington got way too many offensive rebounds, though.)

From WNBAlien: "I still think the Storm are, at worst, a solid playoff team – even without Lauren Jackson. They might have their periods where they can’t score, or games where their offense looks out of sync, but they know how to respond. They can rise to the occasion when necessary and get things done. It happened again and again last year, and it wasn’t always Jackson that pulled it off. The likes of [Sue] Bird, [Swin] Cash, [Tanisha] Wright and [Camille] Little can all step up – at both ends of the floor – and make plays when it counts. That’s not going away. Of course, neither is their team defense, which is the main other reason that I don’t think this team is just going to fade into the background."

Also: The broad-side-of-a-barn problem isn't just our imagination. As a team, their 3-point percentage is much, MUCH lower than last year. So low that Swish Appeal devoted an entire article to the subject. The article concludes, "But ultimately, the Storm have to break out of this shooting slump. There's almost no way around it. WNBA teams simply don't go from above average to dead last without losing a significant shooter."

I'm still waiting....

Quote of the Day: Richard Cohen

From his post for June 22nd:

"It was WNBA madness yesterday, with five games spread from lunchtime until midnight on the US East Coast. I spread the load a little with a Pseudo-Live Game Diary of the early game between Atlanta and Chicago, so now we get to focus on the four late games. Here’s the quick tale of the first three: two decent teams beat two crappy teams even though they were without a key player for most or all of the night; and one mediocre team beat another mediocre team who were missing a key player of their own. The end."

Bits o' Stuff

Radio interview with Sue Bird about the White House visit. As one of the DJ's said, "Now that the Mariners are sucking again, there's a lot riding on you guys, so don't screw it up!"

Jayda Evans' post about Lauren Jackson's surgery.
Says LJ: "Meeting (President) Obama would have been one of the highlights of my life but it wouldn't win us another championship!!"

Over at WNBAlien, here's what Richard Cohen had to say about the Storm/Sun game:
"The Storm just don’t quit. You have to give them credit for that, even if they don’t come out of this game with credit for much else."

From the Hartford Courant, an article about Sue Bird: "Although she couldn't pull it off Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena, whether shot or pass, few can finish like Bird. You want trust? Trust Suzanne Brigit Bird with the ball with the game on the line."

And from the John Altavilla's blog at the Hartford Courant, "The Next Sue Bird? Courtney Vandersloot, Perhaps?"

Quote of the Day: Queer as Folk

From episode 2.20:

[Michael brings his new boyfriend, Ben, to dinner at his mom's house.]

Michael:
Ma, would you stop overfeeding him?

Debbie: He's one of the family now!

Ben: Yeah, I'm one of the family now!

Michael: My sincere condolences.

I Think I'm Bad Luck!

I watched the Storm game online today.... the Storm lost.

I watched the Chicago game on TV today.... Chicago lost.

Obviously it's all my fault.

The Storm's new post player (that Polish chick whose name I can't remember, and am too bummed to be bothered to look it up) played all of 30 seconds today. All I remember her doing was running a fast break with Sue Bird, only to bungle the pass from Bird. Probably not fair to judge her so quickly, though, since she just arrived from Europe and hasn't had much practice with the team. The Storm's 3-point shooting woes continue, by the way. Swin Cash played well, though.

The big news in the league is that two marquee players (Lauren Jackson and LA's Candace Parker) are out with injuries for significant portions of the season.

Over at ESPN, Mechelle Voepel writes: "It's not much use speculating about 'why' two such incredible players have been hurt as much as they have. It's not about pain tolerance; anybody who has seen these two in their respective locker rooms iced down and grimacing after games over the years knows how much and how hard they've been able to play despite feeling physically bad."

In his article "Now What Do We Do?", Richard Cohen writes: "Sue Bird can become more of an offensive threat when she needs to be, and will likely need to step up in that role. Swin Cash, Tanisha Wright and Katie Smith going back to the last place they saw their jumpshots and retrieving them would be useful too."

Voting for the "To 15" continues; here's the blurb for LJ.

Finally, a tweet from LJ explains a bit more about the hip injury: "yeah locked legs during the game, 2 plays later my leg gave out on a drive and I told Brian I thought I'd torn something.. SUB"

Quote of the Day: Slings & Arrows

From "A Mirror up to Nature" (1.5), Geoffrey is having a conversation with Oliver, who is dead.

Geoffrey: Let's cut to the chase, shall we? Are you dead, or am I insane?

Oliver: I don't see why those two thoughts are mutually exclusive.
