Quote of the Day: Don Cheadle & Kristen Bell
Kristen Bell interviews her House of Lies co-star Don Cheadle for "Vanity Fair":
Kristen Bell: Don, you’ve played Marty Kahn on Showtime’s House of Lies for three years now. What’s your favorite thing about working with me?
Don Cheadle: Did they write this for you? Oh, you must have written this yourself. My favorite thing about working with you is that when I look closely in your eyes -- you know how you get emotional and your eyes mist up when we’re doing dramatic scenes? When that happens, I can see myself reflected in your eyes really, really well.
Kristen Bell: So what you love most about me is you?
Don Cheadle: I mean, if you are going to distil it to its most salient point, yes.

Quote of the Day: Rob Thomas
Rob Thomas et al released a clip from the new Veronica Mars movie (see below), and sent out an email to the Kickstarter backers that was written a question/answer format, and included this:
Q: Wow, it looks like you really did shoot a Veronica Mars movie, Rob. You're not living incognito on a Costa Rican beach with our money.
A: Thank god. I've been informed that it's no longer possible for us to refund Kickstarter pledges. But if you get me really drunk, I'll tell you the unsettling things that run through your brain when you see nearly six million dollars in your Amazon account.

From the Veronica Mars Movie Project Update #53:
When I first moved out to Hollywood in my late 20s, I was an audience member at a test screening, and the person running the test warned us about all of this. He said, "the movie will look unfinished. Everything is temp. Music. Color. Sound. But please try to put that out of your head."
I couldn't do it. I kept getting taken out of the movie watching experience by the temp elements. I ripped that movie to shreds in my comment card. I didn't think they'd ever be able to fix that dog.
And that little movie turned out to be Aliens.*
Thanks to the advice I gave them on my comment card.
* Okay, that last part is not true. It was the Ted Danson-Mary Steenburgen indie Pontiac Moon, and it was lovely. Thanks to my comment card there's an entire zombie subplot that was trimmed from the movie. I think it was a good lift. You're welcome, America.

Quote of the Day: Veronica Mars
From "Rashard and Wallace Go to White Castle" (2.12):
Cliff: It's called self-surrender. At the negotiated time - five days hence - Wallace Fennel will turn himself into the Neptune sheriff's department, who will oversee his transfer to the Chicago police.
Wallace: What if I'm not there?
Cliff: Then they'll issue a warrant, you'll be arrested, probably found guilty, and end up [in prison]. My advice? Be punctual.
Veronica: Or prove your innocence.
Cliff: Or that. Suit yourself.

Quote of the Day: Veronica Mars
I found it in this gif set, but I'm pretty sure it's from the pilot:
[Veronica sits down at the same table as Wallace in the school cafeteria.]
Wallace: Girl, you should hear what people say about you.
Veronica: So then what are you doing sitting here?
Wallace: You sat next to me!
Veronica: This is my table.
Wallace: And what a fine table it is. What do you suppose this is made of? Oak?
Veronica: Look, if people are saying such awful things...
Wallace: Well, I figure I've got a choice. I can either go hang out with the punks who laughed at me and took pictures while I was taped to that flag pole, or I can hang out with the chick who cut me down.
And that, folks, is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Quote of the Day: Rob Thomas
The Veronica Mars movie is filming now. Here's a story from set from writer/director/creator Rob Thomas:
Last week I was stressed about one detail on our schedule. I needed a man dressed like a gorilla for a scene in the movie. More specifically, I needed a man dressed like a gorilla to dance in the foreground of one of the shots, while Kristen and Ken Marino played a scene on a bench behind said dancing gorilla.
The problem was, unless you hire an actor who has auditioned (as opposed to using an extra), you never know what you're going to get. I was afraid we'd end up with someone who had no dancing ability — or, more importantly, no willingness to go for it, to really cut loose and dance.
Where to get a dancer? Where to get a dancer?
It was at this point that I thought of Ryan Hansen. He'd just wrapped his last scene of the movie a few hours earlier, and he committed the cardinal sin of hanging out on set afterwards.
I can't begin to tell you how short the list is of actors I've worked with who I'd feel okay walking up to after they've wrapped, and saying, Hey, I know you’re not working tomorrow, but do you mind coming in, dressing in a heavy, old, smelly gorilla costume, and dancing in a scene as glorified background?
Come to think of it, Ryan may be the only person on that list.
And naturally, he agreed to do it, because he's a better person than you or I or anyone we know. After he agreed, I went back and sat in my director's chair. I thought about it for a little longer, and I had another idea.
Well, what if we don't tell the other actors that it's Ryan in that gorilla costume? And what if, during the second or third take, I just come storming onto the set from my chair and just start screaming at the gorilla for upstaging our actors, throwing an absolute tantrum?
Naturally, Ryan was game for this as well.
The next day, we put the plan in motion. Ryan was dancing with abandon in the gorilla suit. After the first take, I barked that "the monkey needed to tone it down a bit." After the next take, without yelling cut, I came out from behind the monitors with a full head of steam. I started yelling, The movie is called VERONICA MARS! Not MAN IN MONKEY SUIT!
Kristen and Ken stared at me wide-eyed. I'm not really a tantrum thrower. The 30-some Kickstarter extras who were working as extras thought I had lost my mind.
It was at this point that Ryan sheepishly took off his gorilla mask and told me he'd try to do better. Laughter and relief all the way around.

Quote of the Day: Rob Thomas
Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas announced today that Tina Majorino would be reprising her role of "Mac" in the Veronica Mars movie. In his announcement, he told this story:
Back in 1996, I received an email from a 11-year-old asking me questions about my first novel, RATS SAW GOD, that had come out that year. The girl was doing a book report, and she'd gone the extra mile by tracking me down. One of her questions was, "What do you want to do next?" I replied that I was hoping to transition into the TV and film business. She responded that she'd done some film work herself.
A girl with big dreams of being an actress! How sweet! I thought to myself. I should say something encouraging!
I figured she'd been an extra in a friend's short film, or something along those lines, I wrote back asking her, politely I hoped, what movies she'd been in.
"Waterworld," she wrote. "Corrina Corrina. When a Man Loves a Woman."
She was very sweet, though. She told me I should keep chasing my dreams.
[p.s. I love Corrina Corrina. Adorable movie. I've watched it many times, but I had completely forgotten that she played the little girl!]

From "A Trip to the Dentist" (1.21):
[Veronica finds Madison in the girls bathroom, looking at herself in the mirror.]
Veronica: You can keep asking, but you're not the fairest. Trust me.
Madison: Well, I can tell you who the pastiest is. What's the deal - can't buy bronzer with food stamps?
Veronica: You wrote "slut" on my car last year at Shelly's party. Why?
Madison: Because "whore" had too many letters.

The Veronica Mars Kickstarter ended today, with $5.7 million raised! In honor of that awesomeness, here's a quote from "Plan B" (2.17):
Weevil: I need your help.
Veronica: Ah, if I had fifty bucks every time someone said that.
Weevil: Look, I know it's a drag being you, and --
Veronica: No, seriously. I'm going to need fifty bucks if you expect me to keep listening.
Weevil: Well, I'm banking on curiosity getting the better of you...
[Veronica hesitates, then stamps her foot.]
Veronica: Alright, tell me! Damn my curiosity!

From "Wichita Linebacker" (3.03):
[With Veronica in college, Keith needs someone to help out at Mars Investigations.]
Veronica: I bet you'd be pretty psyched if I found someone who could help.
Keith: My level of psyched would depend on the someone.
Veronica: Eli Navarro. Remember [him]?
Keith: You mean Weevil? Oh, Veronica, please [be joking].
Veronica: Dad, I'm serious.
Keith: Oh, I don't know, all those times I arrested him, he never struck me as great secretary material. Didn't he get busted for murder?
Veronica: Assault.
Keith: See, so he's not even a very good murderer.

Veronica Mars Movie! Veronica Mars Movie!
Today Rob Thomas (creator) and Kristen Bell (star) of Veronica Mars launched the Veronica Mars movie Kickstarter page. Their goal was to raise $2 million in the next 30 days. If they could get that, then Warner Brothers would let them make a movie.
Here's the video they filmed to promote the project:
There's lot of cool incentives, everything from a copy of the script for $10 to a walk-on role in the movie for $10,000.
Apparently it worked:
Within less than five hours, they had $1 million. By the time I got home from work it was over $2 million.
I went for the $50 level myself: digital copy of the script, digital copy of the movie, t-shirt, and DVD of the the movie that will include extras.
I spent that $50 for three reasons:
1) I really want more Veronica Mars.
2) If you figure $20 for the DVD, $15 for the t-shirt, $10 for the digital copy of the movie, and $5 for the script, that's $50 right there. So I don't feel like I'm over-spending for what I'm going to get.
3) I've had two other cancelled-too-soon shows get new life from fan campaigns (the Farscape mini-series and the Firefly movie) and I didn't do anything to help those projects. I've always felt vaguely guilty about that. Now it's my turn to help, for one of my absolute favorite TV shows.

Quote of the Day: Rob Thomas
Rob Thomas is the creator of Veronica Mars. This is from their Veronica Mars movie Kickstarter project. (More about that in my next post.):
"My goal is to include as many of your favorite characters as possible. It is, after all, time for Veronica’s 10-year high school reunion. Keep in mind that the more money we raise, the cooler movie we can make. A two million dollar fundraising total probably means cross words are exchanged at the class reunion. Three million? We can afford a full-on brawl. Ten million? Who knows... For some reason the Neptune High class reunion takes place on a nuclear submarine! A Hobbit shows up! There’s a Bollywood end-credit dance number! I’ve always wanted to direct Bill Murray. We’ll figure out something cool."

From "Ahoy, Mateys!" (2.08):
[Veronica is helping Logan prove he's innocent of murder.]
Logan: Didn't your dad say that the cigar store's a front for drug dealers? I mean, that's gotta be something.
Veronica: Or not. Sometimes a cigar store is just a cigar store.
Logan: Well, I'll remember to be quippy when you're looking at twenty-to-life.
Veronica: Oh, you're being a jackass. It must be an even-numbered day. I do so prefer the odd-numbered days when you're kissing my ass for a favor.
Logan: Well, you find out why this plastic surgeon is trying to get me sent away for killing Felix, and I will make sure that all even-numbered days are removed from the calendar.
