I Have No Voice; I Have No Words

I also have no hearing.

That was an AMAZING game. Behind almost the entire game. Tied it up with about three minutes left in the fourth quarter. Still behind four with 17 seconds left.

Somehow, some way, they tied it up. Here's LJ's game-tying shot.

In overtime, no one could make their shots. The score went from 70-70 to 75-75.

Second overtime (just the third multiple-overtime playoff game in WNBA history, by the way), Seattle got it together. LJ had fouled out, so it was Sue Bird, Tina Thompson, Katie Smith, Tanisha Wright, and Camille Little. Wright had hit the three-pointer to tie it at 75-75 before the end of the first overtime. In the second overtime, Thompson hit a three, Birdy hit two, and somehow...

WE WON !!!!!!!!!

I was there. I just re-watched the last few minutes of regulation plus both overtimes, and I STILL don't know how we got the win. Amazing.

Quote of the Day: Game Tweets

Oh, so many to choose from:

Rebecca Lobo: "One of the best playoff games I've watched courtside. Game 3 from Minneapolis on Tuesday. Can't wait."

WNBA player (Washington Mystics) Monique Currie: "Key Arena rocks! They are truly Seattle's 6th man!"

Richard "WNBAlien" Cohen: "Wow. What a ballgame. Think I can live with an incorrect prediction in exchange for a Game 3 of that."

Rebecca Lobo, again: "Every time the crowd stood up at Key Arena, our stats monitor went out. Amazing double OT game!"

Missed Opportunity

I didn't really expect the Storm to win this one. I hoped they'd win, of course, but I didn't expect it.

My realistic hope was that they'd keep it close, and wouldn't get blown out. And that's what happened.

But here's my problem: they could have won it. They kept it close enough that if they'd made a few more shots, a few more free throws.....

They could have won it.

And it wasn't just that Minnesota's defense kept them from making shots. (Although Minnesota does play very good defense.) No, they blew easy shots, too.

Bah.

The weirdest part had to have been Sue Bird sitting on the bench during the close finish. But Jayda Evans reports that Sue recognized that the bench was playing better than her, and asked to stay on the sidelines.

Keith:

Last Night's Game

I was a little tired last night, so I put off writing about it until today.

So... Sue Bird played 20 minutes, LJ played 10, and it was Tanisha's turn to rest.

Storm still won, 71-57, and it never felt like much of a contest.

Well, that's not entirely true. Seattle had 10 turnovers in the first quarter. (Easy math -- that's a turnover/minute!) But they were only down five at the end of the quarter. The rest of the game they took better care of the ball, and that was it.

The highlight of the game was definitely that ESPN put a mic on Sue Bird. Here are the highlights:

[h/t S#*! my mouth says]

My favorite parts:

0:50 when she's instructing LJ about Phoenix's defense. (Which Rebecca Lobo then helpfully translates from player-ese for us.)

1:14 when Pam Ward says, "Thank you, Sue."

3:38-3:50 when she's directing Alysha Clark's defense.

Bucky: The main character is a Siamese [cat], but it's essentially a fish out of water story.

Satchel: So this cat moves to the big city to find his way in the world or something?

Bucky: No. There's a fish on the floor. He eats it.

A Little Closer than I'd Like, but the Right Result

Tonight's game went from looking like a blowout (the Storm were up by 19 at halftime), to being a close game that had us on our feet for the last couple of minutes.

Lauren Jackson was back in action. She only played eleven minutes, but scored 11 points, and had a steal and a block. Not bad! With those 11 points, she joined the elite "6000 point" club that includes teammates Katie Smith and Tina Thompson, plus retired player Lisa Leslie.

It's actually pretty cool that LJ hit 6000 points tonight, and last game Tina Thompson hit 7000. And I was there for both!

But back to tonight's game....

Like I said, it looked like a blowout by halftime. But in the third quarter San Antonio went on a tear, and several times had it down to five. In the fourth quarter the Storm put a little more cushion back, only for the Silver Stars to pull within four with 30 seconds left. By that point, though, they had to start fouling, and the Storm players made (most) of their shots, so we held on to win 84-75.

Fun game to end the season with!

(OK, yes, the season's not over yet. They play at Phoenix on Monday, and then the playoffs start. But this was the last home game of the regular season, so it FELT like the end of the season.)

Quote of the Day: Lauren Jackson

At tonight's game, Lauren Jackson scored her 6000th career point. After she made the basket, it flashed on the jumbotron and we all stood and cheered. When asked about the cheering, she said:

"I didn't even know -- until I got to the timeout [that San Antonio called soon after], and everyone was cheering, and I was like, "Damn, that must have been a really nice layup.'"

Breanna Stewart

I'm already getting excited for the college basketball season, party because -- HOORAY!! -- UConn will be playing in Eugene, Oregon! And partly because UConn has the latest national high school coming in. Her name is Breanna Stewart, and just like when Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis won last year, a professional basketball player surprised her at school to give her the award. Only instead of icky Lisa Leslie, it was the awesome Tamika Catchings:

A Record Broken and a Poor Homecoming

Tonight the Storm made Chicago look like the non-playoff-bound team that they're probably going to be. (Seriously, poor Chicago! I really thought this was their year.)

The highlights definitely were:

- The return of former Storm players Swin Cash and Le'Coe Willingham.

- The return of Kentwood High / Gonzaga University alum Courtney Vandersloot.

and

- Tina Thompson becoming the first WNBA player to score more than 7,000 points.

Sue Bird and Alysha Clark both played; Lauren Jackson did not. Svetlana Abrosimova hurt her wrist early in the game and never came back. The word is that nothing's broken, but she's questionable for Friday's game.

Quote of the Day: Richard Cohen

I feel a little odd posting this, now that I know that Mr. WNBAlien has occasionally peeked in on my blog (Hi, Rich!), but I gotta post what I gotta post! So... from this column, about yet another horrible Washington Mystics game:

"Twice in the last 90 seconds of the game, the Washington players looked ready to run a play and make something happen, only for head coach Trudi Lacey, in her own inimitable style, to call timeouts and bring everything to a halt. The plays they ran out of both timeouts ended up being essentially 'give the ball to Matee Ajavon and let her try to get to the rim'. The players probably could’ve managed to design that on their own. Considering neither resulted in any points, they definitely could’ve replicated the results."

A Surprisingly Good Loss

No Sue Bird, no Lauren Jackson, (no Alysha Clark,) and playing the number one team in the Eastern Conference. I was expecting a blowout.

Instead, the remaining Storm players fought hard and kept pace with Connecticut. Except for a bad call (or two) at the end of the game, the Storm could have won this one.

Alas and alack, it was a two point loss.

But still, much improved!

Sophie: Parker, you do know that normal people don't just "walk off" a 20 foot fall, right?

Parker: [suddenly concerned] So all those times I pushed Hardison off a building and he was all "WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!" he wasn't just being funny?

A Sadly Familiar Tale

Does this sound familiar: The Storm played well for about a quarter, but ended up losing badly.

It should, because that's basically what happened in Atlanta a few days ago. (In Indiana they pretty much stank the whole game.)

I actually haven't seen the whole @ San Antonio game. When I got in my car to drive home, the game was just starting, so I listed to most of the first half on the radio. The first few minutes were a turnover-fest. (Seriously: Six of their first nine possessions resulted in turnovers. That's absurd.) But then they went crazy and ended up hitting (almost) all their shots, and taking a five point lead into the second quarter. San Antonio fought back, but Seattle was still only down two at half. By that point I was to the grocery store, so I missed the third quarter. I watched the fourth on TV at home, and, well ..... sigh.

Another nasty loss. Tanisha Wright did play this game, but Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson didn't.

I thought these last few games were about getting their chemistry right? Wouldn't that be helped by having the whole team playing? I am baffled.

Even if Bird and LJ are fighting injuries (and I'm sure they are), how about limiting their minutes? Only having them play ten minutes instead of thirty?

Next game is at home, vs. Connecticut. Connecticut's the top team in the east, but their top two post players (2012 gold medalists Asjha Jones & Tina Charles) are injured and I don't know if one or both will be playing. We shall see...

Quote of the Day: Richard Cohen

From his 9/13/12 post, which included the horror that was Seattle @ Indiana:

"It’s fair to say that last night was not exactly an evening of WNBA basketball for the ages. Four games, all ending in double-digit margins, three of them featuring teams who would love the 2012 season to just end. While the fourth game involved a team missing its entire starting backcourt. It was a night of blowouts and minimal excitement, and Carolyn Peck. Yeah, if you missed it, I wouldn’t worry too much."

Ugly - Sue Bird = REALLY Ugly

Last night's game against Atlanta was bad. Tonight they played Indiana without Sue Bird or Tanisha Wright and it was much, much worse.

Despite 15 (!) turnovers in the first half, the Storm was only behind 26-35 at halftime. By the end of the game the Storm had 28 turnovers and the score was 48-72.

Like I said: UGLY.

The only slight amusement I had was watching all the post players on the floor together. After being low on post players earlier in the season -- when Lauren Jackson was gone and Tina Thompson & Ann Wauters were both injured -- it was kind of funny to see a line-ups with three post players and two guards-that-are-almost forwards. When Shekinna Stricklen and Svetlana Abrosimova are your shortest players on the court, you've got a tall group out!

One of these days I'm going to track down Babylon 5 on DVD and watch the show from the beginning. Everything I've ever heard or seen says it's great, but I've never watched it. But even not having watched it, I still thought this quote was pretty good:

Commander Ivanova:
Unauthorized shipments are a threat to station security. We had to --

Captain Sheridan: Commander, did you threaten to grab a hold of this man by the collar and throw him out an airlock?

Commander Ivanova:
... Yes, I did.

Captain Sheridan: I'm shocked. Shocked and dismayed. I'd remind you that we are short on supplies here. We can't afford to take perfectly good clothing and throw it out into space! Always take the jacket off first, I've told you that before! [to reporter] Sorry, she meant to say "stripped naked and thrown out an airlock". I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

A Return to Form

For the first, second, and fourth quarters of the Storm's game in Atlanta, they looked like 1-7 Storm that started the season: turnovers, horrible shooting percentage, no rebounding.... For the third quarter they looked comfortable and confident.

Unfortunately, that one quarter was not enough to win the game.

Second Verse, Same as the First

Tonight's Seattle @ Tulsa game was remarkably similar to Thursday's Tulsa @ Seattle game. Things stayed even for the first quarter, then Seattle built up a comfortable lead and held it till the end.
