A Supernatural History

Excerpt from ‘Supernatural’ at 200: The Road So Far, An Oral History:

For me [creator Eric Kripke], the core notion behind “Supernatural” was to make a series about urban legends. I think they’re this incredibly rich mythology about the United States, and no one had really tapped into that, so when I started as a writer, one of the first ideas I ever pitched was an urban legend show.

A couple years later I tried to pitch, basically, a “Scooby Doo” rip off of a bunch of kids travelling in a van dealing with these urban legends. It was an idea that I never let go of and kept throwing there every couple years. Finally I had a deal with Warner Bros. and that incarnation was a reporter. Frankly, it was a rip off of “Nightstalker,” but I really fleshed it out and it had mythology.

I took it to Susan Rovner and Len Goldstein at the studio and they said, “We love the idea of doing a horror show,” which no one was really doing on TV at that time, “but we’re not into the reporter, that feels really tired. So no thanks and let’s get another angle.”

So in this moment, when they were basically passing on my idea, as you often do in these kinds of rooms, you start tap dancing. And I said, “forget the reporter, we should do this show as ‘Route 66,’ two cool guys in a classic car cruising the country, chasing down these urban legends,” and literally right on the spot I said “and they’re brothers,” because it popped in my head. “And they’re dealing with their family stuff and they’re fighting evil.” You just start making it up as you go. They were like, “Brothers, wow, that’s a relationship we haven’t seen on TV before.” And from there, “Supernatural” was born... out of a piece of improvisation.

Quote of the Day: The Mary Sue

From their review of this week's Sleepy Hollow episode, "The Vessel":

"Sleepyheads, I have a confession to make. In the weeks since Sleepy Hollow last brightened my life I’d begun to doubt. Was it really as delightfully cheesy as I remembered it? With a diverse cast of characters who work through issues and communicate with each other instead of being all angsty and secretive for the sake of artificially manufactured drama? And a solid balance of humor, action, character development, and a headless, automatic weapon-wielding harbinger of death? Was it all just a dream?

If it’s a dream I haven’t woken up yet, because last night’s episode was everything I’ve come to expect from my new favorite show, plus Ichabod Crane in skinny jeans."

Bonus quote!

"In the video Demon-Jenny tells Corbin that he’ll be killed by the Horseman of Death, and the demon itself will kill Abbie. It then jumps at Corbin but is stopped by a ring of salt. The good guys don’t make the 'salt stops demons!' connection until a few scenes later, because apparently there’s no Supernatural in this universe."

Quote of the Day: Supernatural

From "Bloodlust" (2.03):

Sheriff: What newspaper did you say you worked for?

[Dean & Sam answer at the same time.]

Dean: World Weekly News.

Sam: Weekly World News.

[They try again.]

Dean: World...

Sam: Weekly World News.

Dean: World... I'm new.

Sheriff: Get out of my office.

Quote of the Day: Tumblr

Delightfully, I found this Supernatural-themed Tumblr post on Wil Wheaton's Tumblr:

SUPERNATURAL: Why so sad?

ME: You know why

SUPERNATURAL: Don't be sad...

ME: ...

SUPERNATURAL: Here's a new character

ME: ...

SUPERNATURAL: Don't you like the new character?

ME: No. I don't want to.

SUPERNATURAL: Why not?

ME: Oh don't pretend you don't know.

SUPERNATURAL: It's not gonna be like last time

ME: Yeah right

SUPERNATURAL: I swear

ME: Whatever

SUPERNATURAL: Come on, it's okay, go ahead and like the new character

ME: I don't think I can go through that a--

SUPERNATURAL: Look at that great personality

SUPERNATURAL: Oh pretty too

SUPERNATURAL: Great chemistry with the boys

ME: Well, I guess I could--

SUPERNATURAL: Oh wow totes kicks ass and totes three-dimensional

SUPERNATURAL: Such great promise for the storyline

ME: OH MY GOD THIS CHARACTER'S GREAT

SUPERNATURAL: Are you in love yet?

ME: Uhh

SUPERNATURAL: Well?

ME: I'm not sure...

SUPERNATURAL: Look at that really touching back story

SUPERNATURAL: Doesn't that make you want to cry but in a good way?

ME: ...yeah

SUPERNATURAL: You can totally relate, huh?

ME: Yes...

SUPERNATURAL: Are you in love yet?

ME: Mhmm

SUPERNATURAL: Say it

SUPERNATURAL: Come on, admit it

SUPERNATURAL: DECLARE IT

ME: OKAY FINE! I LOVE THIS CHARACTER SO MUCH I WANT TO WRAP IT IN A WARM BLANKET AND GIVE IT A CUP OF HOT CHOCOLATE!

SUPERNATURAL: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! FANTASTIC

ME: YOU'RE BRILLIANT! THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THIS CHARACTER INTO MY LIFE

SUPERNATURAL: Yeah I'm killing it off

ME: WHAT?

SUPERNATURAL: I'm not even going to give it a proper send off.

ME: YOU'RE JOKING RIGHT?

SUPERNATURAL: Just a quick meaningless death.

ME: NO. YOU CAN'T JUST--

SUPERNATURAL: Yep. It's dead.

SUPERNATURAL: I'm probably not gonna resurrect it, just fyi

Quote of the Day: Tumblr

Every night I watch ~20 minutes of TV before I go to sleep. Right now I'm watching Battlestar Galactica. I'm over halfway through the the fourth (and last) season. At 20 min/night, it's taken me a couple months to get through the first three and half seasons and the two mini-series. It's an excellent show, but it is dark and depressing and bleak. At this point, Gaeta's lost his leg, Dualla killed herself, Roslin is dying, it is just a big mess of despair. I keep reminding myself that regardless of all the bad stuff happening right now -- and that I know will happen in the last few episodes -- I know that Athena and Helo have a happy ending. And sometimes, that's all you can hold on to, you know?

Anyway, the reason I mention all this is that this quote is about Supernatural, but could easily apply to Battlestar Galactica, too:

"you can’t buy happiness

but you can watch Supernatural and that’ll make you forget happiness exists."

Quote of the Day: Tumblr/Supernatural

Seen here, and not funny to anyone who doesn't watch Supernatural. Which I know you don't. But trust me, it's super funny to Supernatural fans:

And thus God spoke to the people:

Hoard toilet paper. You understand me? Hoard it. Hoard it like it’s made of gold. Because it is.

Fandom Heights

Some helpful soul on Tumblr made this awesome height chart. They took actors/characters from some of the most popular fandoms (Supernatural, Sherlock, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, etc.) and sorted them by height. The results are fascinating and occasionally startling.

I wasn't surprised to see Sam Winchester (Supernatural) at the top. That actor is very tall.

There are two Doctor Who companions (Martha & Clara) at the very bottom of the chart.

Harry Potter is actually an inch shorter than Hermione, and Ron is 4" taller than she is. (Those are all Harry Potter characters, if you're not familiar with the books/movies.)

Watson (Sherlock) is actually the same height as Hermione!

River Song (Doctor Who) is the same height as Ironman (Robert Downey Jr).

Amy Pond, Rory, and the Eleventh Doctor (Doctor Who) are all the same height (5'11").

The very top of the chart is taken over by the brothers from Avengers (Loki 6'2" & Thor 6'3") and Supernatural (Sam 6'4" & Dean 6'2").

Here's where it really gets really fun, though: I start comparing their heights to (female) basketball players.

Breanna Stewart (UConn) is the same height as Sam Winchester -- the top of the chart. Stefanie Dolson (UConn) is an inch taller. Lauren Jackson (Storm) is two inches taller. Holy cow!

Even guards suddenly seem tall. Kelly Faris (UConn...well, Connecticut Sun now) is 5'11", the same as Amy, Rory, and the Eleventh Doctor. Even itty-bitty Moriah Jefferson (UConn) is the same height as Donna (Doctor Who)!

Quote of the Day: Osric Chau

Osric Chau plays Kevin Tran on Supernatural. Kevin showed up late in the seventh season, and was recurring throughout the eighth. Recently he started watching Supernatural from the beginning. His reactions are a delight. Tonight he watched "Hell House" (1.17), the episode fans fondly remember as "the one where Sam and Dean keep pranking each other":

"Prank episode, hahaha, this is great, I see why this is a fan fave. Unfortunately they're more creative in real life."

Quote of the Day: Supernatural

From "Man's Best Friend With Benefits" (8.15):

Sam: I'm sorry, but I think Shemp was a funnier "Stooge" than Curly.

Dean: Curly was a freaking genius.

Sam: I always found Curly's work a bit obvious.

Dean: It's supposed to be obvious, man! It's "The Three Stooges"!

"I don't like this universe, Sammy."

So....

This clip is hard to explain.

Ummm...

Ok.

So, Sam & Dean accidentally travel to an alternate universe. This alternate universe is (essentially) our universe. That is, there is a television show called Supernatural that stars Jensen Ackles as Dean and Jared Padalecki as Sam. In this scene they (Sam & Dean) are trying to find out more about their alternate selves (Jared Padalecki & Jensen Ackles):

Quote of the Day: Supernatural

From "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" (5.15):

[Dean and Bobby are hiding in a closet with zombies banging on the door.]

Bobby: Kind of a tight fit, don't you think?

Dean: It's alright. They're idiots. They can't pick a lock.

[The zombies start to pick the lock.]

Bobby: Don't you ever get tired of being wrong?

Dean: I'm making this stuff up as I go. Sue me!

Quote of the Day: Tumblr

In honor of the tonight's Supernatural season finale, here's some finale speculation (seen here):

Tumblr A:

I JUST THOUGHT OF THE FINALE AND LIKE MAYBE SAM DIES FIRST AND WHEN DEAN DIES AND GOES TO HEAVEN HE JUST SEES SAM LEANING AGAINST A DOOR FRAME AND

“What took you so long?”

Tumblr B:

Welcome to the Supernatural fandom: we do not wonder whether the main characters die but which one dies first.

Quote of the Day: Jim Beaver

He played Bobby on Supernatural. Recently he tweeted about being picked up at the airport:

Car service guy was 30 minutes late picking me up at LAX. He texted me before he got there, asking, "What are you wearing?" "A frown," I texted back. He found me.

Quote of the Day: Supernatural

This is one of my favorite scenes from Supernatural. It's from "Sam, Interrupted" (5.11). Dean takes Sam to a psychiatric hospital:

doctor: You were referred to me by a Dr. Babar, in Chicago?

Dean:
That's right.

doctor: Isn't there a children's book about an elephant named Babar?

Dean: I don't know. I don't have any elephant books. Look, Doctor, I think that the doc was in over his head with [Sam]. My brother's [crazy].

doctor: [to Sam] Why don't you tell me how you're feeling.

Sam: I'm fine. I mean, a little depressed, I guess.

doctor: All right. Any idea why?

Sam: Probably because I started the apocalypse.

doctor: The apocalypse?

Sam: Yeah, that's right.

doctor: And…. you think you started it?

Sam: Well, yeah. I mean, I killed this demon -- Lililth -- and I accidentally freed Lucifer from Hell. So, now he's topside, and we're trying to stop him.

doctor: Who is?

Sam: Me, [Dean], and this one angel.

doctor: Oh, you mean like an angel on your shoulder?

Sam: No, no. His name's Castiel. He wears a trench coat.

Dean: See what I mean, Doc? The kid's been beating himself up about this for months. [pause] The apocalypse wasn't his fault.

doctor: It's not?

Dean: No! There was this other demon -- Ruby -- she got him addicted to demon blood. I mean, near the end he was practically chugging the stuff. My brother's not evil, he was just …. high. So can you fix him up, so we can get back to traveling around the country hunting monsters?
