Sleepy Hollow Season Two Finale

Season one of Sleepy Hollow was a whack-a-doodle fun adventure. Season two started out with more of the same, but then got boring. But at the end of the season, they found their footing again. The season two final was great! This is from a review at GiveMeMyRemote:

"Meanwhile, Abbie takes matters into her own hands and pries a nail out of the bench in her cell. Her escape is interrupted when Ichabod’s commander, Colonel Sutton, shows up to make her answer for her crimes.

I have no desire to learn what punishment Sutton has in mind. What matters is that Abbie knows more about close-quarter combat than he ever will. As she beats up an 18th-century colonel, Ichabod watches a video in which he and Abbie attempt to take a selfie and talk about waffles. This scene is the only thing you need to know about SLEEPY HOLLOW. Convinced that Abbie’s telling the truth, he arrives to rescue her, only to find that she’s already got that taken care of. Again, this scene is the show."

The Real Estate Code

From Sleepy Hollow 2.15 "Spellcaster":

[Abbie & Ichabod are at an open house.]

real estate agent: I know the bedrooms are a tad cozy.

Abbie: [to Ichabod] “Cozy" is code for too small to live in.

real estate agent: And the backyard is a bit rustic.

Abbie: [to Ichabod] Rustic means you’ll need a landscaper. [to the agent] How are the bathrooms?

real estate agent: They’re in their original condition!

Ichabod: [to Abbie] Older than me.

An Accurate Assessment of Abbie

From io9's review of this week's Sleepy Hollow episode:

"Abbie shoots the urn that [zapped Katrina] and finishes the incredibly dangerous incantation on her own, completing her arc of just naturally being as good a witch as Katrina, only with more common sense and a gun. (Abbie has literally never met a supernatural thing she was not willing to shoot five times just in case it worked.)"

Small Talk with Ichabod & Abbie

From io9's review of the Sleepy Hollow episode Go Where I Send Thee:

Turns out that in between figuring out the coffeemaker and Netflix's search feature, Ichabod's been practicing driving with Jenny!

But this isn't just practice for driving to the beach for a long walk as they watch the sun set, hand in hand. No, this is because Abbie could be killed at any moment and she wants Ichabod to be independent. Ichabod isn't having it: "Hear me, Grace Abigail Mills. It is not our fate for one of us to bury the other. we will be victorious or defeated, together." (Reminder: We're five minutes into a monster-of-the-week. This is just their version of small talk.)

Sleepy Hollow's "The Kindred"

From Tom&Lorenzo's review of Sleepy Hollow episode 2.02 The Kindred:

"It should probably go without saying, since we and everyone else who ever reviewed this show keep saying it, but the gleefully insane twists and turns of this show are its second biggest selling point (the first being the leads, as we noted in last week’s review). It’s not enough that they came up with the idea of a patchwork man made by Ben Franklin; it’s not enough that they then plopped the head of the legendary headless horseman onto it, but when you take an undead monster constructed by Ben Franklin, add the head of the headless horseman, and then stage a three-way fight between the two owners of the head AND an empty suit of armor with a flaming sword, you win all the gold stars for being the most imaginative TV writers currently working in network TV. Where else are you going to find stuff like this? It’s like Game of Thrones as devised by an 8-year-old high on sugary cereals."

Quote of the Day: Sleepy Hollow

From "The Golem" (1.10):

Crane: I'm still reconciling today's language and its advancements. For example, in my era a "toilet" was a vanity cabinet. "Intercourse" meant, simply, social conversation. "Awful" meant awe-inspiring.

Abbie:
So if I went out with a guy and we had "awful intercourse", we'd be going on a second date?

Crane: Disconcerting, yet accurate.

Abbie: That's just weird.

Quote of the Day: Tumblr

Seen here:

"I think my favorite thing about the writing in Sleepy Hollow is that everyone behaves like fucking rational people. If any of the main four (Abbie, Ichabod, Irving, or Jenny) receives important information, they immediately share it with the group. Ichabod told Abbie right away that Moloch was definitely coming for her instead of keeping it to himself to try and 'protect her for her own good' or some bullshit like that. Irving asked for Abbie and Ichabod’s help in saving Macy without handing over Washington’s bible instead of just stealing it the first chance he got. They asked Jenny’s permission before watching her exorcism tape. On any other show, they would have just watched it, and Jenny would find out, and betrayed trust, and blah blah blah same old shit we’ve seen a hundred times before. They don’t need to manufacture drama, drama happens and the characters react rationally and drama still happens because they are caught up in huge events, but that’s no reason to act stupidly."

The Human Brain Is a Funny Thing

Weird dreams last night...

#1 -- I dreamt Seattle Storm players Camille Little & Tanisha Wright were working as cheerleaders for a mens basketball team in Turkey (rather than playing for a womens team in Turkey, which is what they're actually doing).

#2 -- I had a new iPhone (or similar smartphone) and I couldn't make it work, so I kept giving it to my niece to fix for me. And this was happening while I was visiting the Pacific Science Center with my family and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. (Clearly I have sports on the brain.)

#3 (and this is my favorite) -- I got a call from a local radio station asking me to come down and talk to them about Sleepy Hollow, because their scheduled guest had fallen through. And OBVIOUSLY I would be their next choice. But I only had an hour to get there, and I was at my parents house, so I wasn't sure I was going to make it to downtown Seattle in time, and the cell reception is horrible there so I was having a hard time hearing what the radio station was saying.

"We Need To Talk About Boundaries"

Last night was the season finale of Sleepy Hollow. Clearly they took season-finale lessons from Farscape and Supernatural, because they put all of the main characters in various states of peril: Captain Irving confessed to a murder he didn't commit (to protect his daughter), Jenny is bleeding and unconscious after the Headless Horseman made her car crash, Abbie is trapped in Purgatory, and Ichabod is buried alive.

And season two won't start until the fall....

In the meantime, please enjoy this awesome scene with some cute Abbie followed by some badass Abbie:

Quote of the Day: The Mary Sue

From their review of this week's Sleepy Hollow episode, "The Vessel":

"Sleepyheads, I have a confession to make. In the weeks since Sleepy Hollow last brightened my life I’d begun to doubt. Was it really as delightfully cheesy as I remembered it? With a diverse cast of characters who work through issues and communicate with each other instead of being all angsty and secretive for the sake of artificially manufactured drama? And a solid balance of humor, action, character development, and a headless, automatic weapon-wielding harbinger of death? Was it all just a dream?

If it’s a dream I haven’t woken up yet, because last night’s episode was everything I’ve come to expect from my new favorite show, plus Ichabod Crane in skinny jeans."

Bonus quote!

"In the video Demon-Jenny tells Corbin that he’ll be killed by the Horseman of Death, and the demon itself will kill Abbie. It then jumps at Corbin but is stopped by a ring of salt. The good guys don’t make the 'salt stops demons!' connection until a few scenes later, because apparently there’s no Supernatural in this universe."

Quote of the Day: Sleepy Hollow

Can you believe it's been almost two weeks since I last referenced Sleepy Hollow? Clearly I am slacking off. This is from my favorite episode (so far), "The Midnight Ride" (1.07):

Abbie: I've got good news and bad news. What do you want first?

Crane: [confused] Is this a riddle?

Abbie: Never mind. Bad news: The manuscript's on loan to the National Armor Museum in London.

Crane: London... that's a three month voyage by sea...

Abbie: That's where the good news comes in. They've uploaded the manuscript online.

Crane: That's excellent news!

Abbie: You have no idea what I'm talking about, do you?

Crane: No, I do not.

Quote of the Day: The Mary Sue

From their review of the Sleepy Hollow episode "Necromancer":

This episode took stereotypical notions of the “emotional woman” and the “stoic man,” cut their heads off, and rolled them into a ditch.

Male characters: *EMOTIONAL YELLING*
Female characters: Oh my God shut up, we have an apocalypse to cancel.

Quote of the Day: Tom Mison

Tom Mison plays Ichabod Crane on Sleepy Hollow. This is his story of telling his mother about the show:

"I was telling her about the man with no head chasing me around with an axe and explaining the show...and she was just baffled. [She replied] ‘...Do you think you should... Do you maybe want to do some more Shakespeare or something?’"
