Dumplings!

I went over to my brother's house tonight. His wife made dumplings. Yummy, yummy dumplings.

I ate a lot of dumplings.

In other news, the Seattle Storm and Phoenix Mercury have "The WNBA's Friendliest Rivalry".

Seattle vs. Phoenix

The ESPN WNBA-writer has an interesting write-up about the Western Conference Finals. She points out that a lot of the players on these two teams have lots of other connections. The whole WNBA seems to be like that, but it's particularly strong between these two teams.

Quote of the Day: Slam Online

I had every intention of finding a non-WNBA quote for today. Really! But....

From their article "On to the Next Round: Random Notes from the WNBA Playoffs":

Originally, an Eastern Conference Final game was going to get the only major network slot this coming weekend, but it didn’t take long for the suits to figure out that Phoenix and Seattle would be much, much more fun. After all, who knows what Diana might do? And who really wants to watch Indiana, should the Fever move on, grind Atlanta’s dreams into a 68-62 defeat?

——

And speaking of matchups, I’m rooting for an Atlanta-Phoenix finals. Defense? Who cares? Let’s play five 110-105 games with Diana Taurasi and Angel McCoughtry throwing tantrums at both ends of the court, Izzy making impossible shots and Candice Dupree never missing.

Indiana and Seattle would be entertaining in their own way, but to hell with fundamentals: Sign me for the Mercury and Dream never getting within 10 seconds of a shot-clock violation for the whole series.

[BTW, the Seattle/Phoenix game they're referring to is Game 2 in Phoenix, which will air on ABC, Sunday, Sept. 5 at noon.]

Sweep, Sweep, Sweep, No Sweep

In the first round of the playoffs:

Atlanta swept Washington.

Phoenix swept San Antonio.

Seattle swept Los Angeles.

New York didn't sweep Indiana.

I'm glad, actually. For some reason (and I don't know why) I'm rooting for Indiana. We'll have to wait until Wednesday to see who wins the tie-breaker, though.

Quote of the Day: Richard Cohen

From his "End-of-Season Awards Spectacular":

[He gives out some made-up awards, including Least Valuable Player. He suggests several players, and then...]

It's the League's best team we have to visit to find the true WNBA LVP.

Over in Seattle, Ashley Robinson has been much-maligned over the years for her lack of production, her inability to score and her tendency to do nothing but foul on the rare occasions that she sees the floor. But Robinson is big. That gives her a redeeming quality. Glancing further down the Storm bench this season (way, way down), you'd come across rookie point guard Alison Lacey, a player drafted in the first round as Sue Bird's supposed regular backup. It was a tough year for Lacey, and in fairness it wasn't all her fault. Coach Agler doesn't like to use his bench much, and Tanisha Wright has become more than capable of sliding over from the two-guard spot when Bird needs a rest. That left Lacey without many minutes to acclimatise to the WNBA and as a result, when she did play, it was brutal. She shot 11% for the season (4-35), including a stretch from mid-June to mid-August without a basket. If she sees the floor at any stage in the playoffs, the night will have either gone very, very well for Seattle, or very, very badly.

On the bright side, she's got a nice start on shooting for the Most Improved Player award next year. Maybe 'shooting' wasn't the best choice of words. Sorry, Alison.

Playoff Game #2

Bad start. Baaaaad start. L.A. was up 12-5 midway through the first quarter.

But the Storm know how to re-adjust, and re-adjust they did!

When we were up by more than ten with less than two minutes left, I finally relaxed.

Next up: Phoenix!

ETA: Some good quotes from Jayda Evans' liveblog:

"There's also a small crowd for the noon matchup. So small to start, that the Storm fans -- some in metallic green and gold wigs -- could be heard across the arena."

"Milton-Jones and Jackson shook hands! Neither looked at each other, but it was a pregame shake as part of the captains' circle with officials."

"LA up 7-4 and the crowd is chanting 'Beat the Storm' -- a first."

"As discussed on press row, the opening quarter is about as good as LA can play and the Sparks' lead was only five points. If the Storm turn it on, the game is over."

"Thompson sank two three-pointers, one with 2.1 remaining in the third quarter, to get the crowd something to cheer about. But LA is down 64-54 heading into the final quarter and the Storm is solid when leading heading into the final stanza. Shoot, they're 13-6 when not leading going into the final stanza."

The Doctor: Now, first things first. Be honest. How do I look?

Rose: Umm... different.

The Doctor: Good different or bad different?

Rose: Just... different.

The Doctor: Am I... ginger?

Rose: No, you're just sort of... brown.

The Doctor: [disappointed] Aw, I wanted to be ginger! I've never been ginger! And you, Rose Tyler! Fat lot of good you were! You gave up on me! [Rose looks annoyed] Ooh, that's rude. Is that the sort of man I am now? Am I rude? Rude and not ginger.

Quote of the Day: Brian Agler

From Jayda Evans' liveblog of tonight's game (#1 seed Seattle vs. #4 seed L.A.):

Storm coach Brian Agler wanted to relax a little bit before his team played a Game 1 matchup against Los Angeles on Wednesday, so he clicked on the Eastern Conference semifinal matchup between No. 1 seed Washington and No. 4 seed Atlanta.

It worked until the final.

"It relaxes ya a little bit, but it's not relaxing to see a four-seed beat a one-seed," he said of Atlanta defeating Washington 95-90 in the WNBA postseason's kick-off game.

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "Free Willie" (episode 1.01):

Ray: ...All I'm saying is, in the future, it's a good idea that you don't suggest somebody shoot me.

Fraser: Well I didn't want to, Ray, but it was necessary in order to enrage her.

Ray: You wanted to enrage the person that had a gun to my neck. That was your strategy?

Fraser: I knew that if I kept at it, eventually I'd draw her fire and you'd get your shot. And I knew you'd trust me.

Ray: But I didn't.

Fraser: Yes you did.

Ray: No, I didn't.

Fraser: Yes. You did.

Ray: No. I didn't.

Fraser: Well of course you did. Maybe you just weren't fully aware of it.

Ray: I was very aware of my feelings toward you, Fraser.

Fraser: Well if you didn't know what I was planning, then why'd you follow along?

Ray: I wasn't playing along, I was begging for my life!

Fraser: Oh. Oh well, uh, my mistake.

Ray: Mistake?! You coulda got me killed!

Fraser: Well no, I'd never allow that - you're my friend. You're my best friend, I'd have to say.

Ray: I am? [pause] Hey! Exactly how many "best friends" have you had?

Yet Another Close One

Here's my rundown of the game:

Close, close, close.

They pull ahead.

We pull ahead.

They catch up.

Close, close.

One minute left, we're ahead.

Fifty seconds left, they're ahead.

Twenty seconds left, we're ahead.

Six seconds left, they have the ball.

They miss.

WE WIN!!!!!!!!

Whew! I really thought we had it in the bag when we pulled ahead by 12, but those pesky L.A. veterans made it close.

With this win, Seattle has tied the record for number of games won in the regular season, and set a new record for the best home record of all time (17-0!).

The ESPN announcers kept talking about the playoff games next week: "On Wednesday, Seattle will play.... somebody. On Thursday, Phoenix will play....somebody."

With this win, Seattle knocked Minnesota out of the playoffs (it's complicated), which is good, because this means that all the western teams in the playoffs (Phoenix, LA, and San Antonio) are teams that Seattle swept during the regular season. Whether LA is 3rd and San Antonio is 4th or vice versa is still to be determined....

Quote of the Day: SB Nation: Seattle

From Nate Parham's "Five Reasons Why Now Is the Time To Give the Seattle Storm a Chance":

"[W]hile the prospect of a title run is something for Seattle basketball fans to take pride in during an otherwise dismal year for Seattle professional sports, there are likely still some people who simply are not persuaded by women's basketball for any number of reasons. I'm not going to bother critiquing that reasoning because honestly there's no reason to attack people for not liking a given sport - there are plenty of sports that I just don't watch. Of course there are some people who are openly hostile toward the WNBA and others such as Kelly Dwyer ("The WNBA? I think you should"), Jeff Fecke ("Hating on the WNBA is sexist"), Bob Ryan ("The game you're missing"), and Bethlehem Shoals ("The WNBA: Much Better Than You Think") have articulating the flaws with that reasoning. If you would like to discuss those articles further, I would recommend taking it up with 6'5" WNBA MVP candidate Lauren Jackson."

Not Your Normal Phoenix Game

First of all, Diana Taurasi didn't start. (Phoenix has clinched the #2 spot in the west, so they didn't need to win any more than Seattle did.)

Secondly, the final score was 78-73. Compare that to the previous Seattle/Phoenix games this season:

May 22: 95-89
June 6: 97-74
July 14: 111-107
July 27: 91-85

Notice the difference?

Both teams played their bench players a lot, but Seattle pulled out the win. Phoenix had the ball with less than a minute left, and their coach told his players to dribble it out. The crowd -- understandably -- booed.

A big thank you to Storm coach Brian Agler for not trying anything like that at Key Arena. He did all his starter-resting during road trips, and played to win at home.

Quote of the Day: Swish Appeal

From their analysis of the August 5th Seattle/Connecticut game:

Last night's game had some horrible officiating. (Or so I've been told. I, of course, can't tell these things, since I don't know the rules of the game. But the crowd started chanting "NEW REFS! NEW REFS!" and Jayda Evans -- who does know the rules -- says that it was bad.)

After the game, a reporter asked Storm coach Brian Agler what he thought of the officiating:

"I'm not going to comment on the officials, first of all, because I'm already in the second tier for technicals, and I don't need to get fined any more. I'm just not even going to go there."

Whew!

I took two friends to the Seattle/Minnesota game tonight. I am very much in the proselytizing phase of my fandom, so I wanted to show them how awesome Storm games are.

Unfortunately, the team was a little off its game in the first half, and we were down by 12 at halftime.

Fortunately, they rallied in the second half, and pulled out a very exciting four point win!

Quote of the Day: Cracked

From the list "Great Novels that Were Hated in their Time", Lord of the Flies:

William Golding's brilliant work of social commentary and symbolism was a complete commercial failure when it was released, but the truth is Golding was lucky that the book even made it that far. More than 20 publishers passed on the Lord of the Flies, no doubt due to the "excessive violence and bad language" Golding smacked his audience with like a blackjack upside the head.

The book sold less than 3,000 copies before going out of print in the 50s. In other words, there's probably a hobo making copies of his manifesto on the Xerox machine at a public library who has sold more copies. We can't imagine why. After all, the book was just showing a complete collapse of faith, philosophy and society. With children.

I'm Cursed!

Here's a quick list of the mechanical/electrical devices I've had problems with lately (in approximate chronological order):

1) My mixer.

It died. It was old; it had had a good life.

2) My car.

It died. It was old; it had had a good life.

3) My DVR.

It was being freaky. A few minutes with Comcast customer service fixed it right up.

4) My iron.

It started spewing smoke. WTF??!?! I tossed it.

5) My VCR.

Ok, this one is my bad. I dropped it, and part of the front fell off. It still works, though.

6) My internet connection.

As I've mentioned, it went out at an inopportune time. Comcast helped me fix it, though.

7) My iPod.

The buttons don't work! The scroll-wheel works fine, but I can't play songs, go up a menu, select a song, do anything except scroll up and down on the last album I was playing. I can't even reboot it because that requires pressing buttons. I'm guessing it's a mechanical problem, but I'm going to re-set it anyway, just in case it is a software thing. Of course, that will completely erase it, so, you know, that's fun.

Not Going as I Planned....

I was excited about today's game, because I was actually going to be home to watch it online.

Unfortunately, my modem decided to freak out, and I missed the first 20 minutes.

When I finally was able to tune in, I discovered that Lauren Jackson isn't going to play at all, the starters had already been pulled, and Connecticut had a healthy lead.

It's the end of the third quarter, the starters never did come back in, and we're behind 44-71.

This was not how I planned my afternoon!

The only good part is that the Connecticut announcer is very careful to clarify that they're trouncing the Storm back-up players, not the starters. Thank you, Connecticut announcer!

Trying To Sell My Car...

...Is not fun.

Also not fun? The way Seattle is playing against Atlanta tonight. And Jana Vesala getting bonked in the head, and leaving the game with a bloody towel clutched to her head. The only good part of the game is that (so far) Atlanta isn't playing very well, either.

ETA: Halftime, and the 2nd team (Tanisha Wright is the only starter in the game, and she's only been in since Jana Vesala got injured) has managed to pull ahead of Atlanta. It should be an interesting second half!

E(again)TA: The starters came back to start the third quarter, and promptly lost the lead. They almost caught up by the end of the quarter, and came alive in the fourth quarter to win by ten. This victory assures the Storm home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. There were a few Storm fans at the game (in Atlanta!). One had a sign saying "Seattle Storm 2010 Championship Tour". Hee!

One more thing: Jana Vesala was back on the bench by the end of the game. She didn't play, of course, but hopefully she's ok.

Quote of the Day: Mechelle Voepel

Mechelle Voepel writes about the WNBA for ESPN.com:

So I've long known my arithmetic skills are lacking, but I still was embarrassed when I glanced at the Phoenix Mercury's scores the past two games, added them in my head and came up with 250.

Ha! Two-hundred and fifty points? For two games? How could even my math be that bad? I guess I need a calculator just to add two lousy numbers.

(Pause.)

OK, you might not believe this, but … the calculator says the Mercury really did score 250 points in their past two games. And 753 in their past seven. That's right -- the average Mercury point total in July, 107.6, tops even Phoenix's average daily high temperature for this month, which historically has been about 105.

You know you're in offensive overdrive when your low output for a month is 97 points. There are four teams in the WNBA -- Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Tulsa -- that haven't scored that many points even once this season.

In the first quarter of last night's game, Swin Cash was on fire. Watching her score several buckets in a row, I felt like we were going to win the game. (And we did.)

It turns out there's a basis for my feeling: The ESPN announcers said that in the Storm's losses, Swin Cash averaged ~10 points, but in the wins, she averages ~15. They called her a "barometer" for the team.

Jackson scores a career-high 24 points and grabs a career-high 12 rebounds en route to recording the franchise’s first double-double. She also blocks a career-high five shots. Jackson and Washington’s Vicky Bullet both played a WNBA-record 55 minutes.

[Mostly I was amused by the idea that 24 points could be a career high for Lauren Jackson. I believe her current career high is 47, which is tied for the most points scored in a game in the WNBA. Her points per game this season is currently 21.4, and in 2007 (the year of her second MVP) it was 23.8.]

Experts Say: Don't Despair, Storm Fans!

Mechelle Voepel, who writes for ESPN.com, says so.

And Sue Bird continues to stay positive.

As for me, I plan on cheering extra-hard at tomorrow night's game!

Quote of the Day: badly translated instructions

These are the instructions on a charger for a remote control toy. On the charger there is a charge light, a power light, and an on/off switch:

The light "ON" is charging, and "OFF" is charge finished.
Please turn the power switch to OFF when every charge, or next charge.
If charge finished, please turn the power switch to OFF!

HUH???????

What is happening to the Storm?

Middle of the fourth quarter, they're down by 10 against Tulsa. TULSA!?!?!

Going into this game, Tulsa had as many losses as we had wins.

Quote of the Day: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

From "Bad Eggs" (episode 2.12):

[Buffy and Willow are stressing out about a "baby egg" homework assignment.]

Xander:
Perhaps it's the burden of parenthood. Notice how seriously you two have taken this egg thing. While I, in turn, have, uh, well, chosen a more balanced approach.

[Xander starts tossing his egg around.]

Willow: Xander, maybe you shouldn't...

Xander:
[interrupts] That's exactly what I'm talking about. [tosses] You can't stress over every little thing! [tosses] A child picks up on that. Which is a one-way ticket [tosses] to neurotic city.

[Xander drops the egg; it doesn't break.]

Willow: It didn't break! How come it didn't break?

Xander: Which is another secret to conscientious egg care: a pot of scalding water and about eight minutes.

Willow: You boiled your young?

Xander:
Yeah. I know it sounds cruel, but sometimes you gotta be cruel to be kind! I mean, you can bet that little Xander here is thick-skinned now.

Giles: Technically that would be cheating, yes?

Xander: No! It's like a short cut. You know, like when you run a race?

Buffy: That would also be cheating.

Willow: You should be ashamed.

Giles: I suppose there is a sort of... Machiavellian ingenuity to your transgression.

Xander: I resent that! Or possibly thank you.

Starbuck: Can I make a suggestion that you won't like?

Apollo:
Do you make any other kind?

Thanks, Sue!

Sue Bird was interviewed after the game, and she totally cheered me up:

"To be honest, I'm so glad -- in a way -- that the 'record stuff' is out of the way. I know this loss is going to pay bigger dividends than any win could have. Which is great. Now we can get back to focusing on the playoffs, on what we need to do to get home court advantage throughout."

Also, there's a cute moment at the end of the video when Sue reveals that they were supposed to be interviewing Lauren Jackson, but since she's seeing the doctor, Sue had to fill in. ("She owes me one.")

Quote of the Day: Get Fuzzy

From "Fuzzy Logic" by Darby Conley:

[Bucky comes into the room, wearing a Boston Red Sox hat.]

Rob:
What's up with that hat?

Bucky:
The "B" is for Bucky.

Rob: That "B" is for "Boston", and you hate baseball.

Bucky: I love baseball.

Rob:
Bucky, you can't even stay awake for longer than two pitches.

Bucky:
That's the point, man. You can't buy naps like that.

Boo, Hiss

Seriously, what is it about Minnesota?

At least this time we can place some of the blame on Lauren Jackson getting injured and missing part of the game.

We lost, by one point.

Boo, hiss!

There's a good chance we'll face them in the first round of the playoffs... Like Iris said, our coach better figure out what's going wrong.
