Ye Olden Days
Before last night's game I was chatting with my friends that came, and I mentioned that my mom was a jock when she was in high school. I explained how she had played every intermural sport she could, and that she lettered in mixed doubles tennis (right, Mom?) because that was the only sport she could letter in, pre-Title IX.
My friends, aged 21 and 22, were shocked at the idea that mixed doubles tennis was the only varsity sport available to girls back then.
Today I came across (well, "came across" in the sense that Women's Hoops Blog linked to it) this article about a 92-year-old woman who was a sports sensation in 1930's Kansas. Here's her take on modern women's basketball:
Since Fairbank quit bowling three years ago, sports is limited to her cable feed.
What she sees is something quite different from what she played. Gender equity contributed to the vast changes.
And [Ruth] Fairbank, a high school All-American before girls ever played for her high school, occasionally wishes she could have played the full length of the court rather than be restricted by a half-court game reduced to three players on each end.
"I should have been born a little later. I like how fast the game is today," she said.
"I’d love to play basketball the way they do now, but I enjoyed it when I was playing. I didn’t know any better then."

Busy "Weekend"
A fun "weekend" (i.e. Saturday and Sunday, which are workdays for me) but two days in a row of leaving the house at 8:20 a.m. and not getting home until 11:30 p.m. left me pooped.

Shopping with Mom
The folks over at Jezebel were shocked to hear that most women go shopping for clothes with their moms to get honest opinions.
I thought, "Well, of course! My mom is the perfect person to go clothes-shopping with."
My reasons, however, are different than the ones given in the study. Those ladies apparently have evil friends that deliberately sabotage them. (Which, to me, means they're NOT THEIR FRIENDS! Sheesh!) If I went shopping with a friend, I would be afraid that the friend wouldn't give me their honest opinion -- that they would be too nice.
Mom, on the other hand, genuinely wants me to look good, which means telling me when I'm not. We don't always agree, but I value her opinion.

Dumplings!
I went over to my brother's house tonight. His wife made dumplings. Yummy, yummy dumplings.
I ate a lot of dumplings.

He Did It!
My baby brother got hitched. I signed the paperwork and everything! His wife (wife! My brother's got a wife!) is awesome and her daughter (I've got a niece!) is also cool. The ceremony seemed to go well and it was great to see friends and relatives that we don't get to see very often.
All in all, a lovely day. Congratulations Soto and Mrs. Soto!

Mongolian Dessert??
Sotosoroto has started up a potluck for The Amazing Race. To get in the spirit of things, we're supposed to bring food from the place the episode is taking place.
The first episode started in America, so I brought an apple pie. This week's episode started in China, so I brought moon cakes (a Chinese dessert). Next week's episode will be in Mongolia.

The King County library system only has one Mongolia cookbook in the entire system! I've ordered it. Here's hoping it has a dessert recipe in it...

Happy Birthday Geographically Challenged!
I did the arithmatic so I know how old you are, but I don't believe it! I have a picture in my head of what that age is, and you don't fit it! I would guess you at least ten years younger. So, yay you! :)
