Quote of the Day: Tom & Lorenzo

Tom & Lorenzo are fabulous fashion bloggers. This is from their twitter:

"Watching the news - Lo: 'Snow storm tomorrow? How come we didn't know about that?' T: 'But we know what Cate Blanchett wore to the SAGs.'"

Are There Really Women Out There That Believe This Stuff?

I checked my email. I signed out. The Comcast homepage came up (as it always does when I sign out of my email account). There was all sorts of random news and "news" items on it.

This one caught my eye: "5 Items Every Woman Should Own At Any Age".

I assumed they meant that there were five clothing items that a woman should always own. I thought that might be vaguely interesting, so I clicked on it.

Yikes!

It's a list of the five item they think a woman should own for each decade of her life.

First up, her 20's:

1) sparkly dress
2) leather jacket
3) oxfords (the shoes they picture are silver!)
4) cross-body bag (i.e. a purse with a long strap that can be worn across the body)
5) monogram necklace (WHAT?!?!!)

Next, her 30's:

1) leather pants
2) wrap coat
3) baroque platforms (apparently a type of high-heeled shoe?)
4) investment bag (because it costs more than $1k, it's an investment to buy one...)
5) statement cuff (i.e. a really ugly, chunky bracelet)

Next up, her 40's:

1) killer sheath (sadly, this is a type of dress, not a place to put a knife.)
2) faux fur vest (First: tacky. Second: leather is ok, but not real fur?)
3) point-toe pumps
4) bright clutch
5) cocktail ring

Finally, her 50's:

1) pencil skirt
2) cashmere poncho (Don't forget: "Just pair it with tailored bottoms." Helpful!)
3) knee-high boots
4) contoured belt (so you can give yourself a waist underneath your cashmere poncho!)
5) statement necklace

I think what bothers me the most is that the title of the article implied (to me, at least) that it would be practical advice. To find this nonsense masquerading as helpful advice really irks me.

Advertisements

I'd like to think that advertisements don't have that much sway over me. (Partly because I fast-forward through most of them!) But this commercial really makes me want to go check out Kmart:

Shopping with Mom

The folks over at Jezebel were shocked to hear that most women go shopping for clothes with their moms to get honest opinions.

I thought, "Well, of course! My mom is the perfect person to go clothes-shopping with."

My reasons, however, are different than the ones given in the study. Those ladies apparently have evil friends that deliberately sabotage them. (Which, to me, means they're NOT THEIR FRIENDS! Sheesh!) If I went shopping with a friend, I would be afraid that the friend wouldn't give me their honest opinion -- that they would be too nice.

Mom, on the other hand, genuinely wants me to look good, which means telling me when I'm not. We don't always agree, but I value her opinion.

Old-Timey Clothes

I love me some old-timey clothes. I recently discovered Of Another Fashion, which posts old photographs of women of color. I've been having lots of fun looking at all the pretty pictures.

There's quite a few photographs of women in the Japanese-American internment camps. I'm astounded at how well dressed they were. Look at this nurse. She looks like a movie star. And this photo shows a fashion show (!) at one of the camps.

Aren't Their Toes Cold?

I saw several women today wearing heavy coats, scarves, long pants, and open-toed sandals. Huh?

Bras

I hate bra shopping.

Bras in cup sizes A, B, and C are all "push-up" bras. Bras in sizes D, DD, and DDD are "minimizers".

Apparently women are only allowed to have one size of boobies.

$18-Like

I found a skirt I liked on Fred Meyer's clearance rack. I can never figure out their clearance prices, so I always scan things at those price-checker machines.

I $10-liked the skirt, but I didn't $18-like the skirt, so I didn't get it.

Know what I mean?

Ross

Still gotta love it.

I went to Ross the other day and spent about $70 for seven items. I got: a new pair of headphones for my iPod, two shirts for work, a blouse, a lightweight jacket, a pair of jeans, and a sweater.

I was pleased with my purchases, and the icing on the cake came when I looked at the tag for the sweater. I paid $8.99 (it was on the clearance rack at Ross -- the original Ross price was $17.99) and the original price for the sweater was $68! So that means I got all my stuff for (almost) the same price as the sweater was originally! Woo-hoo!

[And yes, Mom, I will be bringing everything on Thursday. :) ]

Good News/Bad News

It's been a good news/bad news kind of day.

Good news: Today was the last (regular season) home game for the Seattle Storm, and I had tickets.

Bad news: All three of their all-stars, plus one of their best back-up players, couldn't play.

Good news: The secondary team held their own against the #1 ranked team in the league, tying the game up, and sending it into overtime.

Bad news: They lost.

Good news: I found an awesome new winter coat at Ross.

Bad news: It's still too warm to wear it.

Good news: Tonight was the season premiere of Supernatural.

Bad news: .....

Actually, there isn't any more bad news. The season premiere was AWESOME!!!

Gotta Love It!

I love Ross. The other day I bought a pair of pants (MSRP=$40), a pair of sunglasses (MSRP=$30), two shirts (MSRP=$22 & $28), and a sweater (MSRP-$58).

Including tax, I paid $55.54. For all of that.

Awesome!

I've tried Marshall's and TJ Maxx, but I haven't been able to find stuff I like. I got a coat at Marshall's once, but that's it. Ross just seems to have more stuff I like.

[BTW, Mom, you're really going to like the sweater and one of the shirts. :) ]

Flip-Flops

The other day I saw a woman on the bus wearing a long-sleeved t-shirt, a quilted down vest, jeans, and flip-flops.

Her outfit reminded me of that Sesame Street song: "One of these things is not like the others/one of these things just doesn't belong".

Sew What?

I'm getting more comfortable using a needle and thread. Originally I only used them to do counted-cross stitch projects, but now I've started fixing some of my clothes. I've sewed down bra straps that kept slipping, I've put buttons in pants, and I've sewed up some new shirts that had the potential to pop open (why do they make them like that??).

It's quite nice to be able to fix my clothes instead of buying new ones (or relying on my mom). I feel very domestic. In fact, I think I'll go darn some socks right now!

(Wait a second -- does "darn" mean patch holes in socks? Or does it mean to re-knit socks? Let's see.... It's the former! Ok, now I can darn some socks.)

The Things You Medium-Width-Feet People Take for Granted...

The other day I was raving about my new favorite shoe store -- Shoreline Wide Shoes -- to my parents. I explained how awesome it was to just point to a pair of shoes on the rack and ask to try them on.

My mom nodded knowingly, but my medium-width-feet dad said, "But you can always do that." After rolling our eyes at each other, my mom and I explained that regular shoe stores don't have every style in all widths.

Oh, Dad. You and your normal-width feet!

Quote of the Week

From Go Fug Yourself:

How much do we love Kate Winslet? A lot. She never shows up with her boob hanging out, or wearing formal shorts, or sheer culottes, or leggings. She doesn't go to Hyde and start yelling about the characteristics of people's ladyparts, or give interviews where she sniffs that she can't believe people aren't feeding their babies organic peas grown on their own acreage. She has not hired Rachel Zoe and wasted away down to a child's size pants. (In fact, in the week's EW, she says that Emma Thompson once told her that if she [Kate] lost weight, Emma would "never fucking speak to [her] again," and that is one of the reasons we love Emma Thompson, even if she sometimes shows up places in unflattering bodices.)

Don't You Hate It When...

You carefully go through your pants pockets to look for tissues before putting them in the wash, but when you pull your laundry out of the washer, there's little Kleenex-bits over all your clean clothes, which means you somehow missed one!

Urg.
