Quote of the Day: Linda Holmes

From her twitter. She lives in Washington, DC:

With all this weather we're having, I'm sure glad I'm getting out of town this weekend.*

Quote of the Day: Morcheeba

I've used this before, but it seems appropriate, given the weather this week:

"Anyway, it's hot here. It's hot. That's all I got to say. Florida's hot. There's hurricanes, and it's hot. There's thugs, and muggers, and fourteen-year-old kids on bikes with guns. [brightly] Come on over some time!"

Fire Photos

The Seattle Times has a good gallery of photos from the Taylor Bridge Fire.

1, 15, 54, 61, and 62 were the best, I thought. The house in 8 looked familiar.

Quote of the Day: Rebecca Lobo

A twitter conversation between (former UConn player, current ESPN broadcaster) Rebecca Lobo and (UConn coach) Geno Auriemma, after a severe power outage last November:

Rebecca Lobo:
Spent 7 days with no electricity (or tap water or heat). Would you marry your current spouse if you lived in Little House on Prairie days?

Geno Auriemma: only if she could hunt, cook, and chop wood.

Rebecca Lobo:
She'd have to do all 3. Blowing a whistle and yelling at 18-yr-olds not the most useful survival skills.

2010 vs. 2011

This WNBA season is very different than last year. (Although 2011 Minnesota is doing a good impersonation of 2010 Seattle -- they're on an eight-game win streak and they've won two recent games that came down to the wire.)

Last year, Seattle spent the entire year on top of the "WNBA Power Rankings". This year, I was (pleasantly) surprised to see them ranked at number three this week. I think that's the highest they've been all season!

Last year, Storm center Ashley Robinson consistently drove me absolutely crazy. I would groan and roll my eyes when she would check into games. At the beginning of this season, Storm coach Brian Agler claimed that she would win the league's Most Improved Player award. I was, needless to say, quite skeptical. But he was right -- she's having a break-out year, her play doesn't make me want to bang my head on the wall, and she's a front-runner for MIP.

Some things, however, stay the same.

Brrr....

It does not feel like April out there. I took out the garbage tonight and it was cold, wet, and windy. It felt like February or November out there.

Aren't Their Toes Cold?

I saw several women today wearing heavy coats, scarves, long pants, and open-toed sandals. Huh?

Power-less

A fun power outage last night. Just a few hours; just enough for me to dig out my supplies.

It gave me the opportunity to try out my new lantern. It's awesome. (It also cost me way less than Amazon's price.)

Snow, part 2

An hour to work; an hour home. Not too bad. (Especially since half of the hour home was walking from the transit center.)

I noticed yesterday that I don't find the snow pretty like I used to.

Compare this week's "Snow" and "Snow, part 2" posts to the ones I wrote in 2005.

I think the '08/'09 storm ruined it for me.

Snow

An hour to work. Two hours and forty-five minutes home.

Maybe I won't go in tomorrow.....

Quote of the Day: Morcheeba

At the end of their song "Let it Go", there's a spoken word segment, done as if someone was talking on the phone. I've had it running through my head for the last couple of days:

"Anyway, it's hot here. It's hot. That's all I got to say. Florida's hot. There's hurricanes, and it's hot. There's thugs, and muggers, and fourteen-year-old kids on bikes with guns. [brightly] Come on over some time!"

I'm Glad I Don't Watch the Weather Channel

My friend (and fellow manager at work) was visiting her family in Minnesota this last week. On Thursday, a massive tornado ripped through her hometown (Wadena). This ABC video mentions her town at 0:45. The stop sign shown at 0:55 looks like the one in a picture she showed me today. If it's not the same exact stop sign, it's one just like it.

No one in her town died, but something like 25% of the town was destroyed, including the high school, community center, hockey rink, and swimming pool. Her mom's house (where she was at the time) lost of chunk of the roof and a tree went right through the wall of the garage, into the engine block of her mom's car. She's still pretty shaken by the experience.

I'm glad I don't watch the Weather Channel or national news. I know the name of her hometown, and I knew she was there on Thursday. If I'd heard about it before she got back, I would have been very worried about her!

70 Degrees

This is Seattle.

70 should be a high, not a low.

...Again??

Snow, again? Really? We've still got curbside piles of it from the last round!

1/8 inch

1/8" doesn't sound like much snow. But it's an impressive amount to be at my back door -- five feet from the edge of my covered deck.

Mittens

In recent winters, I would complain that my fingers were cold, even though I had gloves on. My friend-who-grew-up-in-Minnesota recommended mittens. She promised that they were warmer than gloves.

I finally heeded her advice, and I am a mitten convert! It's been (literally) freezing here lately, and my hands have stayed nice and warm!

In related winter news, the current 10 day forecast says:

12/19: partly cloudy
12/20: partly cloudy
12/21: snow
12/22: snow shower
12/23: snow shower
12/24: rain/snow
12/25: showers
12/26: rain/snow showers
12/27: rain/snow

So, we should have snow every day.... except Christmas.

Blech

This heat is mucho annoying. It makes it very hard for me to exercise. Not that I'm not working out, because I am. But I find it hard to keep going as long as I would like. I just get so pooped; the heat saps my strength.

Oh well. It (the heat) can't last forever. This is Seattle, after all. I just have to wait it out.

In the meantime, blech.

[BTW, I typed this without my glasses or contacts, which means I can't see what I'm typing unless I lean forward, and then I can only read the text if I squint. It makes for an interesting blogging experience!]

More Snow....

Back in February, I confidently predicted that we wouldn't get any more snow this winter.

And I was right. We're getting more snow this spring.

But at least I'll have a reason to wear my boots!

Global Warming, Eh?

Are you sure about that? Really sure?

Because today is March 28, I live in Seattle, and it's snowing outside.

Forget the Groundhog

Don't worry, we won't have any more snow this winter. How do I know? I finally got my boots! I've been trying to get new boots since early December, and I finally got them. Therefore, we won't get any more snow.
