Title Sequence: Due South

Some TV shows have good title sequences, some have boring title sequences, and some don't have title sequences at all.

I really like the title sequence for Due South, possibly because it features clips of Paul Gross looking ridiculously handsome.

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "Dead Guy Running" (3.09):

[They're talking about being on stake-outs.]

Fraser: I once stood watching an empty cabin for eleven days.

Ray: Did you know it was empty at the time?

Fraser: Not for the first nine days, no.

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "Mountie on the Bounty, part 2" (3.13):

[Ray & Fraser are attempting to apprehend some bad guys. The bad guys are on a cargo ship. Ray & Fraser (and a bunch of Mounties) are on a wooden ship with sails.]

Ray: I don't like this. They got a big metal ship and we got this little wooden boat.

Capt. Thorn: We have the advantage of surprise.

Ray: But they can see us coming!

Fraser: Well, Ray, imagine yourself at sea. Suddenly you find yourself set upon by members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Chicago Police Department in a vessel that is a replica of the HMS Bounty. Wouldn't you be surprised?

Ray: It depends.

Fraser: It depends? On what?

Ray: On if I could SEE YOU COMING!

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "Asylum" (3.11):

[Turnbull is trying to explain curling to Ray.]

Ray: Anything that moves that slowly is not a sport.

Turnbull: [incredulously] Not a sport...?!?!

Ray: This is not a sport; it's housework.

Turnbull: [passionately] It is a calling.

Ray: It may be a pastime, it may even be a hobby, but it is definitely not a sport.

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "Dead Guy Running" (3.09):

Fraser:
What happened to your ear?

Ray:
It's a long story.

Fraser: You know Ray, that thing with your ear kind of reminds me of a wrestling match I once saw in Great Slave Lake where Yukon John actually bit off Haystack Calhoun's ear. Although my friend Innusiq, who knew such things, said it was entirely fake, and that the next night Haystack Calhoun would bite off Yukon John's ear.

Ray:
What is the point of that story?

Fraser: It's just an ear anecdote.

[later]

Fraser:
You know Ray, I had another friend, well, acquaintance, really. Anyway, one day he was fishing and he ripped off his ear with a hula popper. He was able to sew it back on with some eight pound teslon filament. Unfortunately, he sewed it on backwards, and from that day forwards he claimed he was dyslexic.

Ray: What is the point of that story Fraser? I don't get it.

Fraser:
There is nothing to get, Ray, it's just another ear anecdote.

[later]

Fraser: How's your ear?

Ray:
It's fine. Why?

Fraser: Oh, I was just thinking of a relative of mine, well, distant relative, actually: fourth-cousin-three-times-removed, to be exact. Malach Einer was his name. Anyway, one day he had a seashell up to his ear and he was listening to the gentle lapping of the surf when a narwhal poked the surface and shoved the seashell deep into his eardrum, and from that day forward instead of the gentle lapping of the surf he had a rushing torrent raging through his cranium. Relatives, eh?

Car Chases, Due South Style

Due South is probably the only show that has used, or ever will use, a Sarah McLachlan song during a car chase scene:

Quote of the Day: Due South

I know I just did a Due South quote. I don't care. I'm re-watching the RayK years (i.e. season 3 & 4) and it's stuck in my head now.

From "Eclipse" (3.02):

[To get a good spot for a stake-out, Ray bribed a cemetery caretaker with a bottle of scotch. A few minutes later, the caretaker comes back with the bottle.]

caretaker: This thing doesn't work.

Ray: What do you mean it doesn't work? It's just a bottle, it doesn't work or not work.

caretaker: If nothing comes out of it, what is it?

Ray: Empty.

caretaker: But it isn't empty, so it must be broken.

Ray: If it was broken, it'd be empty.

caretaker: Exactly. So it's not working.

Ray: [takes out a pocketknife and smashes the top of the bottle off] There. Now it's broken and it's working.

caretaker: Good man.

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "Mountie on the Bounty" (3.12):

[The ship is sinking, and Fraser sees a fish out of a port window.]

Fraser: Would you look at that!

Ray: It's a fish!

Fraser: It's a sign, Ray.

Ray: It's not a sign, Fraser, it's a fish!

Fraser: Well, it's a trout, actually, which is a sign that the water quality in the Great Lakes is returning to normal.

Ray: It's not a sign, Fraser, it's a fish! That means the boat's sinking, and we're dying!

Fraser: Well, yes, it's a sign of that too.

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "Gift of the Wheelman" (1.10):

"The last half hour I've gotten calls from seven department stores, the Salvation Army, two parade officials, and the director of a children's pageant. This was further augmented by calls from four city councilmen, the Deputy Mayor, and the Police Commissioner. All curious as to why we are detaining all the Santa Clauses in the city on Christmas Eve. The Police Commissioner was especially irked since his daughter was sitting on Santa's knee in a department store when said Santa was cuffed and thrown into a paddy wagon. In our zeal to solve this case, I can't help but wonder if we haven't been, I don't know, how do you say it ... excessively stupid?"

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "An Eye For An Eye (1.14):

Vecchio: Give me the bat!

kid: No!

Vecchio: Come on! Now be a good kid, and give the detective the bat.

kid: No! I found it. Get your own!

Vecchio: Give it!

kid: No!

Fraser: Ray. Ray. Now, children are just like people, only smaller. All you have to do is reason with them. [crouches down] Now, son, that bat is important evidence in a criminal investigation, and we'd be most grateful if you'd cooperate.

kid: A hundred bucks!

Fraser: I see. Ray?

Vecchio:
Okay, kid -- can you spell "penitentiary"? Let's try it together: P-E-N-

kid: Okay! Here!

Quote of the Day: Due South

From the pilot:

Vecchio:
We've got some fishing rods, a rifle last used by Chuck Conners, and a bag of rice. So, what's your plan?

Fraser: We wait for them to come.

Vecchio: Yeah? And?

Fraser: Then we arrest them.

Vecchio: You see, that's such a simple plan that the American mind automatically tends to discount it, so let me run it back to you: We wait here. Gerard and God knows who else comes -- sometime when? We're not sure. And then, when we least expect it, they shoot us dead with automatic weapons. Any part I left out?

Fraser: Yes. I need Gerard alive to testify, so we can't kill him.

Vecchio: Oh, I don't think we're in any danger of doing that.

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "The Gift of the Wheelman" (1.11):

[A group of bank thieves dressed up like Santas, forcing the police to arrest all the Santas in the city.]

Santa #1: You know how much money I'm losing right now? Every kid that sits on my lap I get two bucks.

Detective Huey:
Yup.

Santa #1: I can go through forty kids an hour!

Santa #2: I can do fifty.

Santa #1: Bull. No one can do fifty and live!

Santa Drives a Pick-Up

One of the Christmas episodes I watched this year while wrapping presents was the season four Due South episode "Good for the Soul".

This clip is not indicative of the episode, but its silliness is indicative of the show's general sense of humor:

Quote(s) of the Day(s): Daria & Due South

[Blogger was down yesterday.]

From "Just Add Water" (episode 3.12):

[The school is having a casino-themed fundraiser.]

Mr. DeMartino:
Daria, take my chips.

Daria:
Excuse me?

Mr. DeMartino:
You know, as a thank you for making me want to kill myself a little less than the processed sausages who call themselves your classmates.

Jane:
You're not one of those "young people are our greatest hope" guys, are you?

From "We Are the Eggmen" (episode 2.11):

Ray:
Aren't you worried about your wolf around all these chickens?

Fraser: Well, as long as they aren't in possession of any Milk Duds, they should be fine.

Ray: He hasn't kicked that junk food habit yet?

Fraser:
You know, they say it's harder than heroin.

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "Burning Down the House" (episode 3.01):

Ray: Routine is the silent killer.

Fraser: I thought that was high blood pressure.

Ray: Nah, they changed that.

Fraser:
When?

Ray: You were on vacation.

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "Diefenbaker's Day Off" (episode 1.02):

Ray: [about a man involved in an insurance scam] So what's the dilemma? We bust him.

Fraser: Then I'd be breaking my word to the little girl.

Ray:
And this gives you a problem.

Fraser: Yes.

Ray: Oh.

Fraser: And if I don't turn him in, then I'm withholding evidence of a crime.

Ray: Very good, Benny. You can go to the head of the class.

Fraser:
So I've given it some thought and I've come up with the only...only logical solution: you have to arrest me.

Ray:
For what?

Fraser: I can't tell you that.

Ray: Well, then I'm not gonna arrest you.

Fraser: But you have to.

Ray: Well, I'm not.

Fraser:
You have to!

Ray: Oh, I'm not!

Fraser: You have to!

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "Free Willie" (episode 1.01):

Ray: ...All I'm saying is, in the future, it's a good idea that you don't suggest somebody shoot me.

Fraser: Well I didn't want to, Ray, but it was necessary in order to enrage her.

Ray: You wanted to enrage the person that had a gun to my neck. That was your strategy?

Fraser: I knew that if I kept at it, eventually I'd draw her fire and you'd get your shot. And I knew you'd trust me.

Ray: But I didn't.

Fraser: Yes you did.

Ray: No, I didn't.

Fraser: Yes. You did.

Ray: No. I didn't.

Fraser: Well of course you did. Maybe you just weren't fully aware of it.

Ray: I was very aware of my feelings toward you, Fraser.

Fraser: Well if you didn't know what I was planning, then why'd you follow along?

Ray: I wasn't playing along, I was begging for my life!

Fraser: Oh. Oh well, uh, my mistake.

Ray: Mistake?! You coulda got me killed!

Fraser: Well no, I'd never allow that - you're my friend. You're my best friend, I'd have to say.

Ray: I am? [pause] Hey! Exactly how many "best friends" have you had?

Quote of the Day: Due South

From "The Man Who Knew Too Little" (episode 1.15):

Fraser: My father said something that's always stuck with me, Ray.

Vecchio: Your father never shut up, did he?

Fraser: He said a man with no future will always run to his past.

Vecchio:
And when did this come up, Fraser? Were you sitting around at breakfast when he came up with these things? Or did he come running into your room and just blurt 'em out?

Fraser:
Ray, there's no need to be sarcastic.

Vecchio:
No, I'm just curious. How did he work these things into everyday conversation? Did he say, "Son, did you see the size of that moose? And by the way, a man with no future will always run to his past."?
