I am *so* done with this day
I am so done with this day. In chronological order:
1) While washing dishes, a freshly scrubbed (and therefore soapy) cookie sheet slip out of my hands, flew onto the floor, and slid across the kitchen floor.
2) I was putting a almost empty carton of eggs back in the fridge, but I put the empty end in first, and (apparently) didn't push it in far enough, and it tipped onto the floor, breaking an egg (on the floor).
3) While a batch of Christmas cookies were baking, I sat down on my couch to watch a movie and eat a snack of pizza rolls. (Don't you judge me!) Somehow the plate slipped out of my hands and, as I tried to save it, I knocked my water glass over and got hot cheese on my hand. The water cleaned up easily enough, but the cheese burn is bad enough that every time I take it away from the ice/cold water, it starts to hurt again.
As soon the last batch of cookies is out of the oven, I'm going to bed!

I'm Feeling Pretty Good!
About my upcoming test, that is. (I still haven't completely gotten over this cold.)
I reviewed lessons all day, and tonight I took a practice test and got 89%. (75% is the minimum to pass.) Some more studying, some more practice tests, and I think I'll do ok!

So, How Am I, You Ask?
Well, you didn't, but I'm going to tell you anyway.
I am sick, and I am trying to finish my stupid time-limited schooling while sniffling, coughing, and drinking copious amounts of tea.
Blech.

That's How Sick I've Been!
UConn finally managed to win a televised game, and I completely spaced on mentioning it. (Have I mentioned how sick of being sick I am? 'Cause I am.)
Anyway, they played the University of North Carolina (Camille Little's alma mater, btw), and they smooshed UNC like a bug. Thank goodness, frankly. I was sick as a dog that day, and when I turned on the game (after my afternoon nap), it was the end of the first half and the score was 51-16. It was soothing to know I was going to be watching a blow-out.
The final score was 86-35, and it could have been worse. Late in the first half UConn's deeeep bench guard was put in the game. With 12:46 left in the second half, UConn was up by 50. For the last ten minutes or so of the second half, they were playing that deeeep bench guard, their deeeep bench post, and their other deep bench post.
Even up by 40+, the UConn players were still playing hard. At one point in the second half, there was a loose ball. The two players running it down? Both UConn guards.

Re-Translated Sue Bird Interview
Sorry I haven't been blogging more -- I've got a nasty cold.
But in the meantime, here's an interview with Sue Bird! (h/t Svetlana Abrosimova!) Based the awkwardness of her answers, I'm guessing her answers were translated into Russian, and then the whole article was translated back into English. Fun!

Quote of the Day: Jezebel
A reader sent in this story for their article "The Most Horrifying Period Stories You've Ever Heard":
The Fun Guy And Me
The second time I tripped on mushrooms was my senior year of college (can you tell where this is headed?). I was alone in my apartment and ate the caps and stems. I was enjoying staring at various moving patterns on my pillowcases and listening to the imaginary ocean waves when I had to pee. I went to the bathroom and noticed the blood in the bowl. Usually, I have no cramps until I start my period and this was no exception. However, I completely forgot about the concept of periods and just assumed I was bleeding from the inside out. Specifically, I believed that there were tiny trolls with teeth and nails shredding up my internal organs. I laid in bed curled in the fetal position, for what seemed like hours, begging the trolls to leave my body, until I went to sleep.

So.... Five Years, Then?
Every month I like to go back through my blog and read all the entries from that month in previous years. When I was poking through all the old January posts, I found this one, from January 3, 2009, in which I proudly declare that I had stuck to my daily exercise routine for two years.
I guess I've gotten so used to the exercise that I stopped keeping track, but I did some quick arithmetic and realized that since this is January 2012, I have been exercising daily for five years!
That's pretty cool.

Quote of the Day: Emma Thompson
This site has a bunch of letters written by celebrities -- to their sixteen-year-old selves. Here's an excerpt from Emma Thompson's:
"Don't EVER EVER EVER bother to go on a diet. I know you're obsessed and have that awful thing of standing in the 6th form canteen trying to choose between a yoghourt & a breathe of fresh air (whilst wanting chips & a cheese salad). Don't sweat it. Eat regularly, try & avoid rubbish and never diet. You'll end up the same size anyway, so drop it girl, & drop it NOW. Believe me — nobody cares. Diets are the best way of confusing your metabolism for the rest of your life. Just be you & get on with it, I cannot tell you how much time & energy you'll save & how much happier you'll be."

I Drove Today!
Not very far -- just to the library and back. But it was my first trip in the car since hurting my elbow. Changing gears wasn't too bad. Turning the wheel was more painful. I can do it fine if I scootch my hands along the wheel, rather than crossing them over each other.
I'm definitely not ready for any long drives, but it's nice to know I can get myself to the grocery store again.

I'm Back! (....ish)
Still can't drive, can't type for too long, but I've managed to put my contacts in the last two days! It's the little victories, don't you know!
Here's a tip: Don't sprain your elbow. It hurts and it's very inconvenient.
Still better than rupturing a disk, though.

Everything's So Sparkly!
I went to the eye doctor today and they dilated my eyes. When I've had it done in the past, I drove home in the daylight and they gave me sunglasses. Today I had a later appointment (and it's December in Seattle), so it was dark when I left. I didn't need the sunglasses, but all the lights I saw (headlights, tail-lights, street lights, Christmas lights...) were very sparkly!

Blood
I donated blood today. I haven't done it a long time, but I've been meaning to get back in the habit. I took a friend who had never donated before. It went really well for her; she didn't seem to be affected at all. I feel weak, but I'm otherwise fine.

Weight Non-Loss
I only weigh myself every couple of months, and for the last couple of years, I've consistently lost a pound a month. Until this weigh-in....
My weight this time was exactly the same as it was three months ago.
I thought I might freak out, but I didn't. I'm disappointed, but not upset. I think it's because I haven't broken any of the promises I made to myself: I'm keeping up with my daily exercise and I've stuck to my dessert "budget". If I had skipped workouts, or if I had eaten more than my "budget" allowed, I would be very upset with myself.
But since I've kept up with things, this just feels like a bump in the road. I didn't gain any weight, I just maintained. All I need to do is adjust things a little: Reduce the size of my dessert portions, increase the intensity of my work-outs... little things like that.

BMI
Here's some reasons why the BMI is stupid and useless.
Of course, Stephen Fry put it more succinctly: "Body Mass Index. Something horrid made up by doctors to make me feel ashamed."

Weighty Matters
I only weigh myself every three months. When I did my June weigh-in, I was four pounds less than I was in March.
In fact, I weigh nearly fifteen pounds less than I did a year ago.
Sometimes I can't believe that I'm actually losing weight. Especially when I'm eating a candy bar, cookies, potato chips, etc. But somehow it works! I must be taking in fewer than I'm using.
It's weird. Good, but weird.

How I Spent My Week
Considering what I was doing last Friday, my week was pretty uneventful. What was I doing, you ask? Thank you for asking!
I spent Friday afternoon throwing up. Something I ate, I guess. (I hate not knowing why I got sick. It makes me suspicious of everything I ate that day.)
When this sort of thing happened in the past, it would knock me out for days. But this time, I was able to go to work the next day. I was tired, but I made it through the day. By Monday I was pretty much back to normal. By Tuesday I was able to do a normal
workout.
Maybe it was just a mild nastiness, but I like to think that I was better able to handle it this time because I'm in physically stronger that I used to be.
