Quote of the Day: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

From "A New Man" (4.12):

[Spike is moving out of Xander's basement.]

Anya: Wait. [Gets up and unplugs the tall three-head lamp and brings it over to Spike.] I want to give you something for your new place.

Xander: That's my lamp.

Anya: A gift is traditional. I've read about it.

Xander: That's among friends. With bitter enemies we don't give them my lamp.

Spike: It's not gonna have electricity anyway. It's a crypt, remember?

Anya: What about running water? A fridge to keep your blood fresh?

Spike: [pause] No.

Anya: Well, that's gotta suck. You should just get a hotel room or something.

Keith: They were sleeping together? [Veronica nods] That was weeks before Kendall's husband fled the country.

From "Belle Chose" (2.03):

Adele: Good news on the coma front?

Topher: Uh... yeah. Good news is that he's in a coma.

Adele: I beg your pardon?

Boyd: Just show her what you showed me.

Topher: [Shows Adele a brain scan.] This is a brain. A healthy brain. Frankly, an overly smart brain. It's my brain. And this is Terry Karrens' brain. [Shows Adele another brain scan.] See these dark areas? How they extend all the way out to here? You know why that looks like that? That's because Terry Karrens doesn't use that part of his brain. And that'd be where you find stored such things as empathy, compassion, an aversion to disemboweling puppies... Basically, this is what some of your more famous serial killer's brains look like.

Adele: You're quite certain of this?

Topher: Certain enough that I have serious ethical problems trying to wake him up.

Boyd: Topher has ethical problems. Topher.

Topher: Heh. Way to land it.

From "Child Predator" (1.03):

Watson: You're not dressed. You said you'd go jogging with me this morning.

Holmes: That doesn't sound like me.

Watson: Have you been up all night?

Holmes: I started digging through one of the files I keep on open serial murders. After you'd gone to bed I lost track of time. Still losing track of it, as a matter of fact. No jogging, sorry.

Watson: I thought that we both agreed that a little exercise would be a good addition to your sobriety.

Holmes: For future reference, when I say that I agree with you, it means I'm not listening.

Watson: Do you know what else is great? Jazzercise. Get you some leg warmers, headband, you'll look awesome.

Holmes: I agree with you.

Exit Interviews

Jayda Evans conducted exit interviews with almost all of the Storm players. (Ann Wauters and Ewelina Kobryn had already left for Europe.)

Sue Bird: This [her hip injury] is literally like deja vu because it's the same exact thing, same exact place, almost the same exact timing [as last year]. Then I'm going to go to my team (UMMC Ekaterinburg) overseas January 1. It's really pretty much the same, which is good. I know what to expect. I know how to get through it. And the best part is I know it's going to be successful. I'll never have to drop anymore bombs in regards to my hip. So, I'm very excited to put the hip stuff in the past because I've been dealing with it for a long time and this past month has been tough.

Lauren Jackson: [Jayda asked about the last shot in Game 3 against Minnesota.] You make some, you miss stuff. I missed it, you know. People miss shots all the time, especially me at the moment.

Tanisha Wright: [Jayda asked if she thought Lauren Jackson was nearing retirement.] Lauren? What kind of question is that? She's in her prime. Absolute prime. It's tough for anybody...she played for the Olympics. That is a toll. Mental. I think people forget, this game is mental as much as it is physical.

Camille Little:
[Jayda asked about playing her second season in China.] China is a good place to just expand. I have the green light to do whatever. When you play like that, it's probably the best when you have no worries. I can just shoot when I want and I can work on my offensive aggression. It helped me for sure this year.

Katie Smith: Right now, I'd like to play [next season]. That's my mindset right now, I want to play next summer. We'll see how it pans out, where I'll be, who wants me and all of that. But, yeah, right now I feel pretty good. I still feel like I can help a team out.

Shekinna Stricklen: [Jayda asked how she felt about playing overseas for the first time.] I'm a little nervous, but I'm really excited. It's a new experience. Just being over there by myself, I'm a little nervous about that. But I think everything will be all right.

Svetlana Abrosimova: [Jayda asked how she felt about going home for the first time since being left off the Russian national team.] I'm going to have to face it when I go back home. A few days ago we had big basketball committee (Executive committee at the Russian Basketball Federation) and they voted that the coach (Boris Sokolovsky) and the entire coaching staff officially didn't do a good job. That means that they're not going to (extend) his contract. He doesn't have a job right now. At this stage, there was a coach's committee and everybody said that was not a good job, they didn't select the team right and they didn't prepare them. So, at least somebody saw that. It wasn't just me.

Alysha Clark: [Jayda asked how she felt about finally playing a full season in the WNBA.] It was fun for me. I was glad to finally make it. It was a personal milestone for myself, know that I could actually do it. T

Tina Thompson: I probably haven't had a good night's sleep in three months [because of the knee injury] other than being just completely exhausted. But even then, that's not really good sleep. Right now, as we speak, my leg is still numb. My toes? I know that they're there, but I can't feel them. So, yeah, that's what I've been going through for the last three months.

Coach Agler: I think the first thing you do is sit here and evaluate this season and how it shaped out, how we matured as a team and how each player matured. Then you go in the off-season and have a series of meetings with your staff, your front office, the owners and you talk about a couple things: you talk about the upcoming season but then you also talk about the big picture, the two, three, four years down the road. Obviously, we want to keep adding young players to our roster and the number that we do is hard to say at this moment but we do have a middle of first-round pick and we'll scout real hard to see who that person is and we'll have some options there. Then, we'll decide on what players we want to return and then we'll scour and look and evaluate the free agency market.

Gabrielle: I can’t bear to think of all the innocents who suffer because of this [war]. Someone has to stop it. [Xena stands up.] Come on, Xena. Not even you can stop an entire war. All right, look, I did not mean that as a challenge.

Xena: Stay here with Ephiny.

Gabrielle:
What are you going to do?

Xena: I’m gonna find a safe place for Ephiny to have her baby...and then I’m gonna stop this war.

Gabrielle: I’ve got to learn to keep my mouth shut.

Thoughts on the Fever's Win

1) Lindsay Whalen was the leading scorer for Minnesota. I always say that when Sue Bird is the leading scorer for Seattle, that's a bad sign. I think it's a bad sign for the Lynx, too. I actually feel pretty bad for Whalen. Just like Bird has done so many times, she was trying to will her team to victory. But she needed help, and she didn't get it.

2) At the very end of the game, Indiana guard (and Spokane native) Briann January went to the foul line. There was 3.2 seconds left in the game, and the Fever already had an seven point lead. Coach Dunn quickly sent in a sub: Katie Douglas. Douglas is the #2 superstar on the Fever, and a native of Indiana. She was injured in the last game of the Eastern Conference Finals, and hadn't been available to play again until this game. She was still injured, but was in uniform "just in case". Coach Dunn put her in, so at least she could have a few moments on the court during game time. (Sniff.)

3) After the game was over, Minnesota star Seimone Augustus went to the Indiana huddle and found Indiana star Tamika Catchings, and gave her a big, congratulatory hug. (Sniff, sniff.)

4) This was the first WNBA title for Catchings, who went to Tennessee. Her college coach, recently-retired Pat Summitt, came to tonight's game. (Sniff, sniff, sniff.)

5) During the awards presentation, ESPN reporter Holly Rowe (who was emceeing), didn't even bother to explain why Catchings was Finals MVP. She just said, "Well, I guess you all know who it is, right?". Yes, we did. Other players stepped up (Erlana Larkins -- who'd been out of the league for two years, Briann January -- who tore her ACL last season, Erin Phillips -- who was left off the Australian Olympic team, and others) but Catchings was consistently amazing. In the final game she played 39 minutes, scored 25 points (including going 9-9 from the free throw line), 4 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal, and 3 blocks.

I watched every minute of all four games, and it was an amazing series. I am so happy for Indiana and Tamika Catchings. Both last year and this year my mantra was: If Seattle can't win, I want Indiana to win. This year it happened -- hooray!!!

Quote of the Day: Swish Appeal

The Fever won! The Fever won!

"The Fever's triumph was truly one of team over a group of talented individuals. It was support for the idealistic belief that we all hold, that no matter what the expectations, basketball is great because smart play on offense and hard work on defense can in fact trump overwhelming talent. It was a reminder that the expectations of others mean nothing once two teams step on the court and have to bring outcomes to fruition."

Fever!

Indiana surprised everyone by winning Game 1 in Minnesota.

Game 2 was close, but Minnesota won on Wednesday. Already missing star Katie Douglas, key Indiana reserve Jeanette Pohlen was injured, too.

Today was Game 3, and the series moved to Indiana. Indiana was already down two guards. They only had one left on the bench, and she is deeeep bench.

I went into this game assuming Minnesota would win, and hoping that Indiana would keep it close. Neither of those things happened.

Indiana trounced Minnesota. It was a serious smack-down. The fourth quarter was complete garbage time, but through the first three quarters the score was 70-38. (With 1:58 left in the third quarter, Indiana had their biggest lead at 70-33.)

Final score was 76-59.

Indiana's now up two games to one. If they win the next game -- which is also at home -- they win the championship.

Go Indiana! Get Tamika Catchings her championship! Woo-hoo!!!

Are You Drunk?

Supernatural began its eighth season recently. It is officially the longest-running TV show I have ever watched.* (That is, watched the entirety of.) Undoubtedly Doctor Who will someday take over that honor, but considering the relative number of episodes per season, Supernatural may keep its hold on number of episodes.

Anyway, I seem to be on a Supernatural kick right now, so here's a clip from a couple of seasons ago. (Fifth? Sixth? Not really sure...)

*After I typed that, I remembered that there were eight seasons of Red Dwarf. Then I remembered how awful the eighth season was, and decided to pretend it stopped at seven.

Apparently Katee "Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica" Sackhoff is filming a movie with Karen "Amy on Doctor Who" Gillan. I'm not sure I'd pay money to see that movie -- I haven't paid to see a movie in, oh, a decade? -- but I still think it's cool.

Birdy & LJ Updates

Lauren Jackson is rehabbing in Australia. Her first game playing for her Australian team will be November 2nd.

Sue Bird is rehabbing at UConn, and watching practices while leaning on crutches, wearing UConn blue shorts with her number (10) on them, and looking melancholy*.

*"Melancholy" is a guess. She may also be tired, hungry, bored, intently watching practice, or any other number of things. Melancholy was just the first word to pop in my head, and I so rarely get a chance to use it that I couldn't help myself.

Quote of the Day: BJ Thomas

The song, from the movie:

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
And just like the guy
Whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothin' seems to fit

Those raindrops are fallin'
On my head, they keep fallin'

So I just did me some talkin' to the sun
And I said, I didn't like
The way he got things done
Sleepin' on the job
Those raindrops are fallin'
On my head, they keep fallin'

But there's one thing I know
The blues they send
To meet me won't defeat me
It won't be long till
Happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean
My eyes will soon be turnin' red
Cryin's not for me 'cause
I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'
Because I'm free, nothin's worryin' me

Well, That Went Better Than I Expected

Indiana's #2 star Katie Douglas was injured early in their game three against Connecticut. They got the win, but everyone figured they'd lose at least Game 1 of the Finals.

Douglas was out, and the game was in Minnesota. (Minnesota was 16-1 at home this year.)

But Indiana dug deep, played some good defense, stuck to the offense that was working, and won 76-70.

2004 Championship

According to the Storm website, today marks the eighth anniversary of the Storm winning their first championship.

They posted several fun things, but there are two highlights:

The first is a video of the last few seconds of the game and the post-game celebrations. The "last few seconds of the game" description is a little misleading, though. You don't see the game, you see Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson, waiting on the sidelines for the clock to run out so they can begin celebrating. They're so young! So excited! So adorable!

The second is the audio of Storm radio team calling the last few minutes of the game, followed by the post-game celebration. This had several interesting bits. One is that the announcers were David Locke and Elise Woodward. I have no idea where Locke is now, but I recognize Woodward's name and voice; I think she still does sports radio here in Seattle. Current Storm play-by-play announcer Dick Fain makes a brief cameo -- it seems like he may have been an assistant? (Current Storm color announcer Adia Barnes was down on the court at that time -- she was still a Storm player!) There's lots of other familiar names mentioned, too. I knew who the big players on the Storm were at that time (Tully Bevilaqua, Betty Lennox, etc.), but I was surprised at how many Connecticut players I recognized. Asjha Jones, of course, since she's still on the team. I'd recently heard that (Indiana Fever star) Katie Douglas used to play for Connecticut, but I didn't realize she played for the Sun in 2004. Same with (Minnesota Lynx star) Lindsay Whalen: I knew she used to play for the Sun, but I didn't know she played for them in 2004. (I just looked it up -- 2004 was her rookie season.) Another name I recognized was Nykesha Sales. I only know her as an "old time" UConn player. (I believe she was post-Rebecca Lobo, pre-Sue Bird, i.e. late 90's.) I knew she played in the WNBA for a while, but I didn't know which team(s). Finally, a name that I should have expected, but didn't: Le'Coe Willingham. I knew she played for Connecticut, and I knew she played for Connecticut in the WNBA Finals, but somehow I never put two and two together and realized she played against the Storm in 2004. (Before joining the Storm for the 2010 Championship.)

Minnesota vs. .......

The WNBA Finals are set. It's the Minnesota Lynx vs. the Indiana Fever.

The defending champs vs. the team I consider to be the Storm of the East, minus the championships.

Should be a good series. I'm definitely rooting for Indiana (I want Catch to win her title, gosh darnit!), but I like Minnesota, so I'd be ok if they won.

Quote of the Day: Stephen Fry

From Stephen Fry's America:

"If ever there was a silly name for a town it is surely that of Maryland's elegant and graceful capital city Annapolis. I hope Queen Anne, after whom it was named, wasn't too hacked off about it. What would have been wrong with Anneville? Oh, it sounds like a blacksmith's iron. Of course. Incidentally, one of the minor but interesting linguistic differences that one meets along the way in America is that they say 'named for' where we would say 'named after'. So they might say Annapolis was named for Queen Anne and Baltimore, Maryland's biggest town, was named for the English peer Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore, who, as it happened, married one Anne Arundell, after whom, or for whom, Annapolis was orignally named Anne's Town before, in a fit of sycophancy, the city fathers dedicated it to the then young Princess Anne, later of course the last of the Stewart monarchs. One might say all that and then be left both out of breath and holding the loose end of a conversational thread."

Storm Player's Plans

On the Storm website they have a list of the off-season plans. Most are playing in the Euroleague/Eurocup. Camille Little is going to China. Lauren Jackson is going to Australia. Tanisha Wright is going to heal. Katie Smith is going back for her second year of grad school. And Tina Thompson's going home to Houston to hang out with her son. Awwww..... :)

Jayda Evans has a nice article about how Camille Little was this season's constant (she was the only player to play every game). She also lists the contract situations for the players.

Players under contract:
Sue Bird, Lauren Jackson, Camille Little, Shekinna Stricklen, Tina Thompson (depending on how her knee heals), Ann Wauters, and Tanisha Wright.

Quote of the Day: John Walters

Tonight was Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Connecticut won Game 1 at home, and tonight's game in Indiana came down the wire. The video is here, and it's worth the 30 seconds. First of all, Spokane-native Briann January both blows the final play and saves it, all in the space of a couple seconds. Second, go back and watch the beginning, when Tamika Catchings passes the ball downcourt. She puts everything she has into that pass (and it was a good one), and doesn't have energy/motion left to stop herself from belly-flopping onto the court. Finally, the player that makes the last shot .... If her names sounds familiar, it's because she did the exact same thing to the Storm in August.

Thinking about last-second, game-winning shots naturally made me thing of Sue Bird in general, and the 2001 Big East Championship in particular. From The Same River Twice:

During shootaround [before the game] the Huskies engage in one of their favorite drills. [...] Time is ticking down and the Huskies are stuck at 32 when Sue Bird gets the ball off a miss. Dribbling to halfcourt, she sees that the clock is ticking down, 3 ... 2 ...1 ...

Sue launches a halfcourt shot just before the buzzer sounds. The ball sails through the air, a guided missile, and swishes through the net. The Huskies clamor around Sue, whose back is obviously feeling better, as if it were a real game-winner.

The play reminds Svetlana Abrosimova of another basketball dream she once head. "After we lost to Tennessee last year," says Sveta, who in that game passed the ball to Tamika Williams instead of taking the last-second shot herself, "I had a dream about that play. I dreamt that we inbounded the ball to Sue instead of me. And you know what? Sue made the shot."

She is, to me, one of those people about whom Vogue will wax poetic while I think to myself, “am I supposed to know who this is?” Now, in her case, that’s not really fair: she’s been in plenty of movies, I just haven’t seen them, and her face doesn’t really stick in my head. There are many, many people featured in Vogue for whom the answer to, “am I supposed to know who this is?” is and always will be “unless your job involves doing the seating chart for a variety of New York-area functions, no.” Like, I know I am getting off track here, but how is it possible that Vogue still really thinks I should be kept apprised of what their favorite socialite-dermatologist is wearing? They are always yapping about, like, two very specific lady dermatologists and I am SURE those women are well-dressed and I wish them the best, but unless they are curing my skin diseases or fixing my wrinkles, I really don’t care. And if Vogue is going to focus on The Well-Dressed Dermatologists of the World, I bet you $100 there’s a woman in Boston who can prescribe Retin-A and is wearing some amazing shoes today. Like, there is a world beyond the island of Manhattan, Vogue. Anyway.

The Timeout that Came Too Late

The Storm kept it close throughout the game. With ~30 seconds left, a Sue Bird (who else?) three got them to within one. They got the stop at the other end, and Lauren Jackson secured the rebound. Then....

Then there was a mess.

They had a timeout, but no one called it. With three seconds left, nothing was happening, and finally they used their timeout. After the timeout, they got LJ a shot, but it bounced off the rim.

End of the season.

Quote of the Day: Daria

From "Depth Takes a Holiday" (3.03):

Jane: This is just like a high school.

Daria:
You know, I get the feeling we'll be saying that all our lives.

St. Patrick:
It only seems like high school. Actually, it's much worse.

Jane: That's what we'll be saying all our lives.

I've Missed These Types of Posts....

It's been SUCH a long time since a game like last night's. I can't think of any other wins from this season that were this awesome. In 2011 there was Sue Bird's buzzer beater against Connecticut, that was pretty good. And 2010 was full of them.

But 2012? Not so much.

Until last night! So much fun stuff....

According to ESPN's Mechelle Voepel, Lauren Jackson thought we were down four at the end of regulation: "[Jackson's] shot swished, and KeyArena -- always one of the noisier places in the WNBA -- went nuts. It was then that Jackson realized, 'Oh, wait, we're still alive!' Because she actually wasn't fully aware of the score when she launched that 3-pointer. 'To be honest, I thought we were four down,' Jackson said. 'I just shot it. It was the only shot that felt good all game.' "

The WNBAlien column: "[Coach] Agler drew up another play in another timeout, but strong Minnesota defense – in a zone for one of the rare occasions all night – had the set virtually nullified. Then the ball went to Tanisha Wright on the wing, and her ball fake to the corner saw [Maya] Moore leave her completely alone. Moore never should’ve left, especially as Camille Little was the player in the corner, and Wright calmly knocked down the three to tie the game. For a 19% three-point shooter on the season, who had turned down a wide open triple earlier in the game that illustrated her lack of confidence out there, it was a hell of a shot. Even if Moore had left her in acres of space to take it."

Sue Bird and Tanisha Wright's post-game interview.

And finally, Jayda Evans has some post-game notes: "Storm fans may be bopping into work on Monday, hoarse but ecstatic about a 86-79 double-overtime playoff win against Minnesota at KeyArena on Sunday."

Quote(s) of the Day: RebKell

RebKell is a women's basketball forums site. It was there that Sue Bird was dubbed "Die Bitches".

Here is the post that originated the nickname: "Seriously..now Sue doesn't even have to show up till the fourth quarter to take us down. Then she's all 'Die Bitches' and she kills us."

I believe the game in question was the 2010 Phoenix @ Seattle game where the Storm were down 18 at halftime and got it to within two by the end of the third quarter.

And here is a good use of the nickname from last night's game: "I'm not counting them out until the final buzzer. I want Wiggy to continue with us and not make us settle back. And Seattle has Die Bitches so...."
