Church: The whole thing was over before it even started. Poor Jimmy was the last one to go. Tex walked up to him, pulled Jimmy's skull right out of his head and beat him to death with it.
Tucker: Wait a second... how do you beat someone to death with their own skull? That doesn't seem physically possible.
Church: You know, that's exactly what Jimmy kept screaming.

Quote of the Day: Cracked
[Kim Jong Il is] such a fan of [Michael] Jordan's, in fact, that he owns a VHS recording of every single game he played with the Bulls. He's even invited Michael to North Korea for a meeting and a friendly game or two but. Perhaps not approving of North Korea's controversial "Kidnap Everybody Kim Jong Il Thinks is Amusing" policy, Jordan declined. When Secretary of State Madeleine Albright visited North Korea in 2000, she gave him a basketball signed by Mr. Jordan. A nice gesture, to be sure. For anybody else, that gets put right on the mantle. For Kim Jong Il, that ball gets displayed in the Museum of International Understanding, which he built.
For the ball.

Q: What are three Aussie words an American wouldn't understand — and can you toss in a favorite Aussie curse word I can put in the newspaper?
LJ: Dunny — toilet. Cobber — mate. "How you doin', cobber?" My grandfather calls my brother that all the time. Grog, as in alcohol. And bugger. I always say bugger.
Q: Now can you use all four in a sentence involving you and Sue Bird?
LJ: (Laughs). OK, let me give it a shot. "Sue, me cobber, and I went out for some grog last night, I went to the dunny and dropped me mobile in the loo and all I could say was bugger!" Not very intelligent or witty, but I got it done!

Quote of the Day: Vern
"The Oklahomans weren’t bluffing, they packed up the Sonics and left town. It’s like that TV movie 'I Know My First Name Is Steven,' they’re now hiding out with a creepy new dad, calling themselves the Oklahoma City Thunder. Those who weren’t in the 75% who voted for I-91, or who live outside of the city but were hoping we’d pay for the stadium for them, said we fucked up. People started to panic. Alot [sic] of the restaurants in the neighborhood that counted on Sonics fans for business did have to close. It was rough going for a little bit.
But here’s the beauty of it, the reason why I’m boring you with all this local history. We were confronted with a scam that many cities have faced, being blackmailed by a corporation, bullied into bailing out their broken business model. And the conventional wisdom is that you have to give them what they want because if you don’t you’re fucked. We didn’t do that, we chose our own integrity over the NBA. We said yeah, we like basketball, but fuck you man, are you kidding me? No. No way. Get the fuck out of here.
And then as they were leaving we said 'But you don’t really need that women’s team though, do you?' and they said, 'What women’s team? We own a women’s team?' And we said 'Yeah, I think so, why don’t you look around for it and if you find it we’ll take it off your hands.' Four local business women who were Storm season ticket holders banded together and bought them from the Oklahomans so they could keep them in Seattle."

More Celebration Stuff
Slam Online, which is a website that I find to be East Coast-biased, does manage to have a nice article comparing the 2010 Storm to the 1998 Comets.
At the beginning of the season, Richard Cohen of Sports Page Magazine correctly picked the Storm to win it all. (Although he didn't have the opponent right. Or the number of games it would take. But still!)
This isn't Championship related, but I keep forgetting to post it. This article compares the 2010 Storm to the 1995 Mariners. It's unfortunate that the Mariners couldn't take their "Refuse to Lose" all the way to a championship. Unlike, say, the Storm!

Championship Articles
"When the Storm won the 2004 title, the league still had a best-of-three finals. Seattle still had an NBA team. Atlanta didn't have a WNBA squad.
Bird was only 23 -- she turned 24 four days after the Storm won the championship -- and still the heir apparent as the league's best point guard, but not quite there yet.
Lauren Jackson had already won a WNBA MVP award, in 2003. We knew she was a great player then, but we had to wait to see just how great. That has been answered: one of the greatest ever. She won her third WNBA MVP award this season and then was named 2010 WNBA Finals MVP on Thursday after a 15-point, nine-rebound performance.
Six years ago, Swin Cash was still basically happy in Detroit, having won a WNBA title there in '03. But as the Storm played Connecticut in the 2004 Finals, Cash was facing rehab for a knee injury suffered near the end of the regular season. In front of her were also back problems that would require surgery. She would have a long climb back as a premiere player, and she has done that. Cash had 18 points on Thursday, including two critical third-quarter 3-pointers.
Oh, and Tanisha Wright was a senior at Penn State in 2004. Little was a sophomore at North Carolina."
From the Storm Stats Guy (Kevin Pelton): "Le’coe Willingham, who won back-to-back championships with two different teams. Yes, Coe, you’re going to see Obama again."
From SBSeattle:
"But what makes this team great is simple to anyone who has watched the entire season: it’s hard to remember a team with such a strong expectation to win every single time they hit the court, no matter what the circumstances, no matter who the opponent. It’s hard to remember a team in any sport for whom anything short of winning was a disappointment on almost every single occasion, slow starts or late deficits notwithstanding."

Quote of the Day: Sue Bird
"I guess now I can be honest, right?" Storm point guard Sue Bird said. "Losing in the first round has been terrible, and having people write about it and talk about it, it's something that I took very personally, that a lot of us took very personally. I judge myself as a player based on winning, and to not win in five years, really, really hurt.
"So to be sitting here now, and with the playoff disappointment and the ownership change and everything that's gone on I mean, I can't even describe it. And I know this is going to last for a full year, so that's the best part."

Next Day Thoughts & News
With Sue Bird hitting the big shot with less than three seconds left, Game 1 of the finals superficially looked a lot like Game 2 against Phoenix. But I was thinking about it today, and in a lot of ways it was more like Game 1 against Phoenix.
In both Game 1's, the opponent's leading scorer had an off night (Phoenix's Diana Taurasi, Atlanta's Angel McCoughtry). For the Storm, both games had Swin Cash not at her best. In Game 2 against Phoenix, Diana Taurasi came back in a big way. Presumably Angel McCoughtry will, too. Hopefully Swin Cash can make a comeback as well!

"Seattle has been so good all year long because they're smart, disciplined, balanced, work extremely hard, and because 'throw Lauren the ball' is a heck of a first option."
"[Seattle] won 13 games in the regular season when they were trailing going into the fourth quarter - the most any other team managed was four."
"Sue Bird is the best point guard in the game, running the offense with calculated precision and stepping up to take important shots when necessary, as miserable Mercury fans can attest."
"Seattle is a different animal from the Dream down on the block, but no less dangerous. They may not have the pure size and length of Atlanta, but the presence of League MVP Lauren Jackson means that we may barely notice."
"Just to top things off, Jackson's a superb defender these days as well (I doubt she really cares, but making her second-team All-Defense this year was less than she deserved)."
"No team in WNBA history has ever gone undefeated at home throughout an entire season including the playoffs, but that certainly doesn't mean the Storm are destined to drop at least one in this series. It would just be another record for Seattle to break in this remarkable season."

"There are those who might suggest they look for another ballhandler/point guard. I don't know if they will do that. They need Penny Taylor to be healthy, and I really don't think she was through the playoffs. The Mercury followed the 2007 championship with a down season, then came back and won in 2009, then had another "down" season this year, though they made the playoffs. Maybe the mindset will be different next year. The reason that I find this such a hard question to answer is that they had most of the pieces this year, although of course they missed Cappie. Heck, maybe what the Mercury MOST needs in 2011 is for the Storm to not play as well. Seattle accounted for seven of their losses."

Team Owners
The Atlanta Dream actually have a pretty cool story. They were an expansion team in 2008 and only won four games. In 2009 they made it to the playoffs. This year, their third year of existence, they have made it to the finals. That's impressive.
The city of Atlanta is starved for a championship.
I'm still rooting for Seattle, of course, but I think it's neat that the Dream has made such a quick turnaround. And as bad as other sports teams are in Atlanta, I think it's fair to say that Seattle's are worse.

More on the Game (Of Course!)
And amazing as Bird's game-winning show was (and it was amazing -- I literally screamed when the shot went in), upon re-watching (and re-re-re-re-watching) the last five minutes of the game, the play that sticks in my head is the one that came before it, the one that tied up the game. Here's what happened (in my non-expert speak):
1) Lauren Jackson has an "old fashioned" three-point play, and that makes it 86-88.
2) Phoenix takes the ball back down to their basket and Diana Taurasai attempts a jump shot, but it swirls out of the basket.
3) Swin Cash gets the rebound and gives it to Sue Bird.
4) As everyone's heading down court, Sue Bird tosses the ball to Tanisha Wright, and then does some directing-of-traffic.
5) Wright has a "wide open look" (according to the ESPN dude) at the three-point line, but doesn't take the shot. She passes to Swin Cash.
6) Swin Cash passes to Lauren Jackson, who is directly under the basket. In catching the pass, Jackson almost goes out of bounds, but does one of her patented save-the-ball-from-going-out-of-bounds moves*, and throws it back out to Wright.
7) Wright immediately passes it to Sue Bird.
8) Sue Bird immediately attempts a three-point shot.
9) The ball bounces high off of the rim, and Lauren Jackson gets the rebound (on the other side of the basket).
10) Jackson is sandwiched between defenders. Bird runs all the way around the three-point line, and comes up to Jackson. Jackson passes the ball to Bird.
11) Bird runs behind Jackson (and her defenders), runs right along the line, and bounce-passes the ball -- around a defender -- to Swin Cash, who's right under the basket.
12) Swin Cash makes the basket. (Despite being sandwiched between her own pair of defenders.)
13) The Storm bench goes crazy.
The only player that didn't touch the ball was Camille Little. (She was helping, I'm sure, she just didn't touch the ball.) Tanisha Wright and Sue Bird both made great assists/passes. Lauren Jackson saved them from turning the ball over and had the important offensive rebound. Swin Cash was right next to Lauren Jackson when she got the rebound, and could have gotten it herself if necessary, and she make the basket. That's a team. That's why I love the Storm so much. That's, I think, why this particular Storm team is doing so well.
*Lauren Jackson may want to consider suing Svetlana Abrosimova for copyright infringement.

Quote of the Day: Swin Cash
reporter: As this comeback was happening, [could] you let yourself enjoy it?
Swin Cash: I still can't remember half of things that happened in the fourth quarter, to be honest with you. My teammates and I were talking about it, and we actually saw some of the film, but it's just unbelievable. It's one of those moments that you have to -- You really can't enjoy it when you're in the moment, but afterward you reflect on it, and say, "Man, this is epic!"
reporter: Do you know what happened to you? Because you had, like, 11 of 22 in the fourth quarter.
Swin Cash: [laughing] I have no idea! To be honest with you, I told Sue: There was a point in the game when Lauren had got an "and one" and she was at the free throw line, and all I remember is Sue saying to me, "If she makes this basket, we're only down two." And I looked up, and I was like, "WHAT?!?" like I couldn't believe it, that we were that close. It was just one of those things that I was just kind of out of my mind, in the moment.
reporter: After the game, you had tears in your eyes.
Swin Cash: Yeah, the first thing that came to my mind was 2007. That's the last time I was in the finals. We actually lost against Phoenix, in Detroit, on our home floor. And I hated that feeling. I HATED that feeling. And to be able to go into Phoenix, and win the Western Conference on their floor, gave me a little bit of comfort.
I love that that fourth quarter comeback was as much of a blur to the players as it was for us!

Playoff Game #4
I even mentally-composed a blog post about the loss, and how I was planning on getting a ticket for Game 3 here in Seattle. Jayda Evans continued, "Dupree has a pair of silky layins to help the Mercury to a 14-6 run to start the second half. It doesn't look like the Storm has what it takes to defeat the defending champs on the road. Good thing there's a Game 3 at KeyArena."
But then....
Seattle held Phoenix scoreless for the last couple of minutes, and kept chipping away at the lead. And then it was tied. And then Bird made a three-pointer to pull ahead. But! As Jayda Evans says: "I knew the shot was going in, but seriously thought Taurasi, who had never lost a postseason series, would counter. Even Bird said afterward that she expected it, pumping her hands downward to keep her teammates calm after her heroic basket. 'I don't celebrate until it's over,' Bird said."
Well, you can celebrate now, Sue Bird!

Quote of the Day: WNBA Website
Seattle was tied with Phoenix at 88-88. With less than 24 seconds left in the game, the Storm had the ball and Coach Agler told his players to run out the clock, then try for a shot. Bird made a three-pointer, and Phoenix had 2.8 seconds left to respond. They tried to get a shot off, but Diana Taurasi (who, as expected, was on fire tonight) missed a tough shot.

I've introduced Curly to a lot of television shows: Farscape, Battlestar Galactica, Supernatural, Veronica Mars, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Burn Notice, Dead Like Me, True Blood, and maybe another one that I've forgotten.
When Doctor Who or Supernatural are airing new eps, we watch those. Right now, however, there's nothing on. So, tonight we watched an old episode of Doctor Who ("School Reunion" -- the one with Sarah Jane!) and then I introduced her to Red Dwarf.
Ah, Red Dwarf. I've missed you. ("It's cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere, I'm all alone, more or less!")
So...
From "Future Echoes" (episode 1.2):

LISTER: [Laughing.] What are you doing?
CAT: I'm doing what you said do.
LISTER: I said, "Take a few essential basics you couldn't bear to leave behind."
CAT: Right! These are all I'm taking. Just these, and the other ten racks. Travel light, move fast!
LISTER: You can't take all of this. There's no room.
CAT: [Rummaging around in the rack.] OK, then I'll leave ... this! [Pulls
out a small red handkerchief.] I'll just have to do without it.
LISTER: You can take two suits and that's it.
CAT: Two suits? Then I'm staying!
LISTER: You can't stay. By the time I come out, you'll be dead.
CAT: Two suits is dead!
[Lister walks away.]
CAT: [Calling after him.] Hey! If I cut off my leg and leave it behind, can I take three?

Miscellaneous Notes Before Tomorrow's Game
I figured out why I was rooting for Indiana: New York's star is Cappie Pondexter. Cappie Pondexter won two championships with Phoenix before demanding to be traded to New York. I've never heard a good reason why, so I find that annoyingly diva-esque.
Generally Jayda Evans writes about the Storm for the Seattle Times. Recently Jerry Brewer has a written a few articles. Does he only write about them when they're in the playoffs? Anyway, this one is about how a successful basketball team requires more than just a star (or two stars, in the case of the Storm) and filler players. You need to have a full supporting team.
In the comments of that article, someone linked to an article written at the beginning of the 2007 season (i.e. before I started following the Storm). It's about Sue Bird and how frustrated she was with how the 2006 ended, and how poorly she played in the playoffs that year.

Quote of the Day: Mechelle Voepel
"Mmm, mmm, mmm, what a choice UConn fans face. They've been through this before. With a wealth of riches (Huskies alums) to root for in the WNBA, they are used to conflicts by now.
Like absurdly wealthy people trying to decide which Porsche to drive on a weekend getaway, the Huskies faithful can feign distress over their dilemma in the Western Conference finals. They've had to choose between Seattle and Phoenix previously in the postseason, in 2007. It's a high-rent district kind of quandary."
