Quote of the Day: Red Dwarf

From "Stasis Leak" (2.04):

[Rimmer is trying to convince Captain Hollister to punish Lister.]

Rimmer: On the morning of Febuary the 26th, at 0800 hrs, [Lister] did engage in conversation with second technician Rimmer, Arnold J...

Captain Hollister: For crying out loud, Rimmer!

Rimmer: - the outcome of which was a proposal by the aforementioned Lister to the aforementioned Rimmer to cook him breakfast.

Captain Hollister:
Okay, I'm getting the picture.

Rimmer: Breakfast comprised of two eggs, three rashers of bacon, a grilled tomato, two sausages, a small portion of fried potatoes... and a large quantity of mushrooms. Having consumed this repast, second technician Rimmer, Arnold J. experienced what can only be described as a "voyage to trip-out city". To wit, a major hallucinogenic fit.

Captain Hollister: Lister, is this true?

Lister:
No, sir. I'm sure it was only one egg.

Rimmer: The aforementioned Rimmer, to wit, me, then attended inspection parade. He was totally naked except for a pair of mock-leather driving gloves and some blue swimming goggles. Under the influence of this psychedelic breakfast he went on to attack two senior officers, believing them to be giraffes who were armed and dangerous.

Quote of the Day: Daria

From "Quinn the Brain":

[Quinn has abandoned her cute, pink outfits to dress in black...]

Daria: Did a mime crawl in here and die?

Quinn: I'm putting together an outfit. For your information, this is how deep people dress.

Daria: Yeah, deeply affected people.

Quinn: Thank you. By the way, do you know what existential means? Because today someone told me my writing was existential, so I thought I should coordinate, you know, with wardrobe.

Daria:
Yeah, that's what Camus would have done. For your purposes, existential means "pseudo-intellectual poser with accessories from the street fair."

Quote of the Day: The Fug Girls

From Fug and Fab — Except Really Just Fug, If We’re Being Honest — the ARIA Awards: Zoe Badwi:

Apparently Zoe here is another singer/songwriter/model/actress/whatever, who has been hoarding all the material people could have used to line their own skirts. Unkind, Zoe. Unkind. But the very best part about her Wikipedia page is this: "While filming the music video for the song, a resident in the street where the clip was filmed fired a catapault at Badwi, who was unharmed. It is not known whether her singing was a motive for the attack." SHE WAS ATTACKED BY A CATAPULT. Holy. Australians do not mess around.

Quote of the Day: Cracked

From 5 Soldiers Who Kicked Ass In the Face of Death (and Logic):

"During the War of the Spanish Succession back in 1701, the navies of Britain and France were in the Caribbean duking it out with cannons and broadsides. If you're curious what Britain and France were doing in a war for SPANISH succession, feel free to read up on it. It's complicated."

From "White Hole" (4.04):

Cat: Come on, man, you gotta sacrifice your life. I'm not asking you to do anything I wouldn't do.

Rimmer: You? You'd sacrifice your life for the good of the crew?

Cat: No! I'd sacrifice your life for the good of the crew.

You know what? We all have childhood issues. Okay? Believe me. I got the full subscription, okay? Horror stories.

Emerson: Maybe not horror stories.

Never Doubt Me!!!!

During out WONDERFUL family dinner today (I love Thanksgiving!), mention was made of the original Melrose Place television show. Ped said something like, "That was the one with Courtney Thorne-Smith, right?"

I said yes, and -- dredging through my memory banks -- said she played "Allison".

Ped said that didn't sound right to him.

Whoops!

It looks like I forgot to tell you who won the UConn/Stanford game.

UConn won, 68-58.

:)

More details? Aside from guards Bria Hartley (S) and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (F), UConn's offense stunk to high heaven. They were on top of their defense, though, with rebounds, steals, and blocks aplenty. Good game!

(I think being a Storm fan has trained me to value defense.)

Quote of the Day: Svetlana Abrosimova

UConn played Stanford tonight, and it was televised -- woo hoo!

The first 10 minutes were a bit painful, though. Neither team seemed to be able to score. UConn got some great steals and blocks, but then they couldn't convert on the other end! Anyway...

Apparently (UConn alum) Svetlana Abrosimova was watching the game over in Europe. She tweeted:

"Watching UCONN- Stanford game!!! Defense look great...and [I know] D wins games, but can somebody start scoring please:)"

Bonus quote, from an ESPN article about the game:

"Stanford and Connecticut beat most teams because each is better coached, deeper and more experienced. They beat each other because ties aren't allowed."

Quote of the Day: Being Human

From "The Pack" (4.4):

McNair: You know what I don't understand? Is what a clean and kind girl like you is doing with a vampire.

Annie: How did you know?!

McNair: I see things. Live the life we do, pays to know who's safe and who's a threat.

Annie:
Look. My first boyfriend took naked photos of me while I was asleep and put them on the internet. My second boyfriend got drunk and asked my mum for a threesome. My third boyfriend pushed me down the stairs and killed me. So I think a vampire's pretty much... marriage material, given my track record.

Quote of the Day: John Altavilla

John Altavilla writes about UConn for the Hartford Courant. I read his blog online because I am a crazy person that roots for a team on the other side of the country that I have no personal connection to, and today he wrote about Monday's game against Stanford. This will be the first "real" game (i.e. against a ranked team) of the season, and he knows that a lot of UConn fans are nervous. So: from "10 Things To Make You Feel Good About UConn", the #7 reason UConn will beat Stanford:

7). UConn wants to put on a good show because you never know when the Pac-10 or 12 or 14 or 16 will want to expand to the snow belt.

Quote of the Day: Richard Cohen

From WNBAlien, regarding the league-wide sponsorship by Boost Mobile:

"This could be vitally important for a league that is always struggling to find new revenue streams and keep itself afloat in a very competitive market. As someone who comes from Europe and grew up with sponsors’ logos across the front of every soccer team I saw, I was always a proponent of jersey sponsorship, long before WNBA teams finally started utilising it. The practice might be against everything American sportsfans are used to, but it’s an obvious way to earn money and the league failed to exploit it for a long time. This deal extends what we’ve seen in the past with McDonald’s and BBVA where they’ve put logos on multiple teams’ uniforms for the Finals or an All-Star Game. The only thing I don’t like is that it’ll make the uniforms look even more similar league-wide, but for extra financial stability that doesn’t seem like a big deal. Practically anything that brings extra investment into the WNBA is a positive step (y’know, within reason. Let’s hope they don’t make the players play in their underwear or hold ritual executions at halftime any time soon)."

Quote of the Day: Lois & Clark

Does anyone remember Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman? This is from "Neverending Battle" (#1.03):

Clark:
Consider this a life lesson, Lois. No charge.

Lois:
You set me up?

Clark:
Yes, I did.

Lois:
Congratulations Clark, you win.

Clark:
I...I didn't win.

Lois: Yes, you did. You got the story. And you took me down a peg in the process. I guess I deserved that. You worked hard and you earned your success.

Clark: Thanks, Lois. That means a lot to me.

Lois:
Well, I hope so. Cherish this moment because, Clark, you'll never experience this again.

Clark: Hey Lois, what have we got going on tomorrow?

Lois: Now, there, you're using that word again, Clark. There is 'you'. There is 'I'. There is no 'we'.

Clark: Not yet.

Lois: Not ever.

Clark:
We'll see.

Lois:
How long can you hold your breath?

Clark:
A very long time.

(Pro) Basketball News

The good: A new interview with Lauren Jackson.

The bad: The Israeli women's basketball league has canceled their season. Storm guard Tanisha Wright has played there for several years. UConn?

I'm still trying to decide if I want to spend $60 so I can watch all of UConn's games online this season.

Last season I remember wishing I could see more of their games, but.... sixty dollars? For a team on the other side of the country?

But I want to see my favorite player (Kelly Faris) play her junior year. And I want to see how last year's freshman (especially Stefanie Dolson) continue to improve. And I want to see the new crop of freshman play, especially the new phenom: Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis. Plus, point guard Caroline Doty will (hopefully) be healthy this year. I've never seen her play!

But sixty dollars?

But...

Quote of the Day: Jeff Goldberg

From Bird at the Buzzer:

"From the moment she arrived in Storrs in the fall of 1998, Sue Bird was thrust into a world of sky-high expectations. Bird's incoming freshman class was touted as the best -- and most diverse - of Auriemma's career. Bird and [Keirsten] Walters were the guards, while Swin Cash, Tamika Williams, and Asjha Jones manned the post. Of the five, Bird was considered the lowest-ranked -- at seventeenth -- in the national recruiting surveys. The other four were considered top-ten prospects."

From The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

Look, Basketball Stuff!

The WNBA season is over; college basketball hasn't started yet.

However!

The Storm website has an interview with Ashley Robinson, who's playing for a Czech team. This is the first time she's played for a Euroleague team. (Euroleague is the equivalent of the major league in Europe. Eurocup is more like the minors.)

Yelana Leuchanka, who you may remember as the blonde post player for Atlanta in 2010, plays for UMMC Ekaterinburg this time of year. One of her teammates is Svetlana Abrosimova. (Sue Bird will be playing there, too, this season, but she won't join the team until January.) Leuchanka posted a video she took on their team plane.

Speaking of foreign post players, remember Liz Cambage? She's back home in Australia, playing in the WNBL, but she also attended the Melbourne Cup (a horse race). Someone tweeted a picture of her standing next to a man that I must assume is/was a jockey.
