From "Wichita Linebacker" (3.03):

[With Veronica in college, Keith needs someone to help out at Mars Investigations.]

Veronica: I bet you'd be pretty psyched if I found someone who could help.

Keith: My level of psyched would depend on the someone.

Veronica: Eli Navarro. Remember [him]?

Keith:
You mean Weevil? Oh, Veronica, please [be joking].

Veronica: Dad, I'm serious.

Keith: Oh, I don't know, all those times I arrested him, he never struck me as great secretary material. Didn't he get busted for murder?

Veronica:

LJ Update

Lauren Jackson says she plans to rest until the 2014 WNBA season. She's not planning to play in Australia or Europe next season. The Storm are her priority right now:

"I’m not pushing to come back for the [Canberra Capitals] next season, or to go to Europe or anything. At the moment, my goal is to be ready for the [2014] WNBA season, so when I say ready, it means fit and ready to go. That’s basically my aim, so whatever happens before that is going to be a bonus."

From "The San Lorenzo Job" (3.16):

[The team "steals" an election in San Lorenzo.]

Moreau: I told [the media] not to report the results.

Nate: Well, they’re not reporting the results, but they have to report people in the streets. They have to report what people are saying. In the absence of truth, the press will report rumor. Didn’t you get it, Moreau? I mean, from the beginning, I was running an American campaign. No need win, you just declare victory from the start, first, and you stick to the story.

Moreau: I have the media. I have the guns. I -- I have the... government.

Quote of the Day: ani difranco

From "small world":

she was shaking and talking
louder and louder
each sentence was sifted
to a very fine powder
her face was wet and tight
her grip was cold and light
"a strong wind could blow you down"
i heard myself say
"word up sister
a strong wind
could take me away"

i said "how long have
you been at large
they told me you were stashed
last time i asked"
she said "i've been out now
for all of three hours
i just resurfaced
and here you are
i must admit
that it has been hard
so far"

i said "skeletons are fine
your closet or mine"
and we took turns recounting
the details of lost time
and when we had both
admitted it all
we threw our heads back
and laughed until we cried
we laughed because the world
is absurd and beautiful and small

there we were
washed up on the curb
as the rush hour traffic
went out with the tide
and i was aware that
with every word spoken and shared
i could see her shaking subside
i said "sister looks to me
like you're going to be fine"

Quote of the Day: Geno Auriemma

From this article, about the most recent Notre Dame/UConn game:

"Finally, I said to Kelly [Faris], ‘Who is the best in-bounds passer we have? She said. ‘I am.’ Then I asked her, ‘Who is the best person we have to throw the pass to?’ She said, ‘I am.’ I said, ‘Well that’s where I went wrong. I couldn’t figure out a way to let you inbound the ball to yourself.’"

Bonus quote!

“That’s when it dawned on me that my job is to put my players in the best possible position in those last 18.6 seconds,” Auriemma said. “I didn’t do that. And when I told them that I had let them down, I was expecting them, or at least two or three of them, to say, ‘Nah coach.’ Instead they all went ‘uh huh’ and nodded their heads.”

Veronica Mars Movie! Veronica Mars Movie!

Today Rob Thomas (creator) and Kristen Bell (star) of Veronica Mars launched the Veronica Mars movie Kickstarter page. Their goal was to raise $2 million in the next 30 days. If they could get that, then Warner Brothers would let them make a movie.

Here's the video they filmed to promote the project:

There's lot of cool incentives, everything from a copy of the script for $10 to a walk-on role in the movie for $10,000.

Apparently it worked:

Within less than five hours, they had $1 million. By the time I got home from work it was over $2 million.

I went for the $50 level myself: digital copy of the script, digital copy of the movie, t-shirt, and DVD of the the movie that will include extras.

I spent that $50 for three reasons:

1) I really want more Veronica Mars.

2) If you figure $20 for the DVD, $15 for the t-shirt, $10 for the digital copy of the movie, and $5 for the script, that's $50 right there. So I don't feel like I'm over-spending for what I'm going to get.

3) I've had two other cancelled-too-soon shows get new life from fan campaigns (the Farscape mini-series and the Firefly movie) and I didn't do anything to help those projects. I've always felt vaguely guilty about that. Now it's my turn to help, for one of my absolute favorite TV shows.

Quote of the Day: Rob Thomas

Rob Thomas is the creator of Veronica Mars. This is from their Veronica Mars movie Kickstarter project. (More about that in my next post.):

"My goal is to include as many of your favorite characters as possible. It is, after all, time for Veronica’s 10-year high school reunion. Keep in mind that the more money we raise, the cooler movie we can make. A two million dollar fundraising total probably means cross words are exchanged at the class reunion. Three million? We can afford a full-on brawl. Ten million? Who knows... For some reason the Neptune High class reunion takes place on a nuclear submarine! A Hobbit shows up! There’s a Bollywood end-credit dance number! I’ve always wanted to direct Bill Murray. We’ll figure out something cool."

Heart-Breaking Basketball Day

Earlier today it was announced that Sue Bird will miss the 2013 Storm season. She is going to have surgery on her knee.

The only good that I can see of this is that -- with Lauren Jackson gone, too -- they're going to stink this season, which means they can get a top draft pick in 2014. There are a bunch of players I know are good that will be eligible in 2014: Stefanie Dolson (UConn, center), Bria Hartley (UConn, guard), Chelsea Gray (Duke, guard), Chiney Ogwumike (Stanford, forward), and my personal favorite, Odyssey Sims (Baylor, guard). The first time I saw Sims play -- Baylor @ Stanford in November 2010 -- I knew I wanted her to play for the Storm. I think it's worth noting that the only game Baylor has lost in the last two years was when Sims was injured and didn't play -- not Briney Griner.

Tonight was the final game of the Big East Tournament. UConn vs. Notre Dame, just like the last two years. This time, though, Notre Dame won. With 18 seconds left, with the shot clock off, it was tied and UConn had the ball. But they couldn't keep it (they didn't even get a shot off!) and Notre Dame made their last shot.

In the last two seasons, UConn and Notre Dame have played four times: twice in the regular season, at the Big East Championship game, and in the Final Four. In 2010-2011, UConn won the first three and lost the Final Four game. In 2011-2012, Notre Dame won all but the Big East Championship. I'm hoping this season is a mirror of the 2010-2011 game, and UConn can pull out the win the big game. They certainly have the potential. They lost the first game by one point, in triple overtime the second, and by two points tonight.

Triple Overtimes Are More Fun When My Team Wins

Before I get to the game, I need to talk about the UConn uniforms. What the heck, Nike?? Those were weird. Not as weird as last year's special uniforms, but still weird. They had the "C" logo over the number, which looked really unbalanced. It was bad enough on players who have two numbers, but looked really bizarre on single-digit players. Even more annoying, Nike apparently forgot/didn't care that UConn doesn't put the players names on the back of their jerseys. When I first turned on the game, I was distracted when I realized there was names on the back of the jerseys. Then I looked a little closer...

someone on Twitter:
are there names on those jerseys? holy schnikes.
UConn WBB Twitter: We would never! ... It says "Huskies"

I love the indignation of the UConn twitter account!

So. The game. Ugh...

If UConn could hit a damn free throw, the game would have been over in the first overtime. Seriously, these were the stats for the first overtime:

UConn: 3/3 field goals, 1/5 free throws

Notre Dame: 1/5 field goals, 4/4 free throws

In both the first and second overtimes, UConn would bust out to a lead, and then Notre Dame would tie it up. In the third overtime, Notre Dame took the lead, and that was it.

Considering that UConn's starting center and point guard fouled out in regulation, I should be proud of the team for holding on that long. But it hurts to see them lose a game they fought so hard in.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Kelly Faris were the two stars for UConn. KML played all 55 minutes and Faris played 53. KML had 26 points, 6 rebounds, four assists, and 3 steals. Faris had 21 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. KML was team high on points and Faris was team high on rebounds (as a 5'11" guard!). That was career high points for Faris and, I think, rebounds.

But here's the stat of the game: UConn had 35 turnovers.
