Quote of the Week

Recently I've been re-watching one of my favorite Britcoms: "Waiting for God". The main characters, Tom Ballard and Diana Trent, are residents at the Bayview Retirement Home. In this scene, Diana's being asked her opinion of Bayview by a psychologist:

psychologist: What is it that you find particularly pleasant here, Miss Trent?

Diana: Well, it is relatively free of assassins.

psychologist: Assassins?

Diana: Yes. You see, in the outside world I found that a lot of people were trying to kill me. Notably, the closer members of my family. I could hardly step outside my front door without mad nieces trying to machine gun me down. But here, at Bayview, with its barbed wire and its watchtowers and its fierce dogs, I feel safe, secure, and know that this is still a land of hope and glory.

[Yes, she's being sarcastic.]

Mongolian Dessert??

Sotosoroto has started up a potluck for The Amazing Race. To get in the spirit of things, we're supposed to bring food from the place the episode is taking place.

The first episode started in America, so I brought an apple pie. This week's episode started in China, so I brought moon cakes (a Chinese dessert). Next week's episode will be in Mongolia.

Mongolia??

The King County library system only has one Mongolia cookbook in the entire system! I've ordered it. Here's hoping it has a dessert recipe in it...

Is It Bad...

...that I rented Flight of the Phoenix just because Hugh Laurie is in it?

Several years ago I rented Pitch Black because Claudia Black was in it. That movie was so bad that I turned it off when her character died. Hopefully Flight of the Phoenix will be better.

Quote of the Week

This week, a quote from one of my favorite novels: The Long Run, by Daniel Keys Moran. I'm currently reading it for the fourth (fifth?) time, and it's still awesome:

If you can keep your head while all those about you are losing theirs, then perhaps you have misunderstood the situation.

Conflicting Smells

Several months ago I cooked bacon at the same time I was baking chocolate chip cookies. I love both those smells, but combined? Ick.

The other day I baked chocolate chip cookies right after I baked an apple pie. I thought the smells might be kind of gross together, but it smelled good!

Don't You Just Hate It When....

The foil on your yogurt rips when you open it, so then you have to pick of the other pieces, and your fingers get yogurt all over them. So messy! And unsanitary.

Blech.

Quote of the Week

From Burnt Offerings by Laurell K. Hamilton:

Larry: Even nodding my head hurts.
Anita: It'll hurt more tomorrow.
Larry: Gee, thanks, boss. I needed to know that.
Anita: Lying to you won't make it hurt less.
Larry: Anybody ever tell you your bedside manner sucks?
Anita: Lots of people.

With Friends Like These...

me: I very right-handed. I can't do anything with my left hand!

Tofutti Cutie: Have you ever thought about trying to do something about that?

me: I actually know someone who broke her right arm as a kid, so she was forced to learn to use her left hand.

Tofutti Cutie: Would you like me to push you down the stairs?

Whoops!

I almost didn't go to work Sunday. When my alarm went off I thought to myself, "Why did I turn my alarm on last night? Today's my day off!" I switched it off and went back to sleep.

Ten minutes later I woke up on my own. I started to wonder why I had set my alarm Saturday night. After a bit, I realized that it was Sunday and I needed to get up!

Quote of the Week

This week: Bill Bryson. This quote is from an essay called "At a Loss" that appears in his book I'm a Stranger Here Myself. It's a good book -- thanks for the loan, Mom!

Of all the things I am not very good at, living in the real world is perhaps the most outstanding. I am constantly filled with wonder at the number of things that other people do without any evident difficulty that are pretty much beyond me. I cannot tell you the number of times that I have gone looking for the rest room in a movie theater, for instance, and ended up standing in an alley on the wrong side of a self-locking door. My particular speciality now is returning to hotel desks two or three times a day and asking what my room number is. I am, in short, easily confused.

Wha??

Last week it was starting to get pleasantly fall-like. There was even a rainstorm! But now it's hot again, and the weatherman is saying things like "heat wave" and "Indian summer".

Come back fall, come back!
