Jumper

Apparently they've made a movie out of Steven Gould's book Jumper.

I'm a little worried.

The book is excellent. Every person I've bought it for/loaned it to has loved it. If they stuck to the book, it might make an awesome movie. But, of course, they didn't stick to the book. Just from previews, I can tell that they've strayed far from the book. (Quelle surprise.)

Sigh. Why do they always do this?

Saddest. Episode. Ever.

I don't know what possessed me, but I re-watched the season two finale of "Doctor Who" tonight. I've been watching a lot of "Doctor Who" lately, but I wasn't planning on watching that episode tonight. But it started playing, and for some reason I didn't turn it off.

What was I thinking??? Ten minutes from the end of the episode I started sniffling and tears began to well up in my eyes. Five minutes from the end of the episode I was sobbing, and I kept on sobbing all the way to the end credits.

I stopped watching almost an hour again, but just thinking about it make me tear up again.

I can't remember where I read it, but someone wrote (and I'm paraphrasing, since I don't remember the exact quote) that the season two finale is so sad that for weeks after, the mere sight of a beach will start you sobbing uncontrollably.

And yes, it really is THAT sad.

But oh so good.

[FYI, just thinking about it has made me start crying again. Oh well. It was worth it.]

Quote of the Week

From Dave Barry's History of the Millennium (So Far):

October 2004: The Boston Red Sox, ending an eighty-six-year drought, defeat the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series [...] The Red Sox get into the series thanks to the fact that the New York Yankees -- who were leading the American League championships three games to none, and have all-stars at every position, not to mention a payroll larger than the gross national product of Sweden -- chose that particular time to execute the most spectacular choke in all of sports history, an unbelievable Gag-o-Rama, a noxious nosedive, a pathetic gut-check failure of such epic dimensions that every thinking human outside of the New York metropolitan area experienced a near-orgasmic level of happiness. But there is no need to rub it in.

Quote(s) of the Week

Yowzers, I'm behind! I'm going to blame the holidays, plus getting a new computer. (Getting a new computer meant transferring my old information to my new computer, plus finally emptying out my old-old computer. But now the old computer and the old-old computer are empty, and have been taken to a computer recycling center. I have a lot more closet space now!)

December 21, 2007: I got season five of Red vs. Blue for Christmas (Thanks, Soto!) so I watched all five seasons in a row. It was awesome.

Church: I'm Church; I'm the leader. Everybody looks up to me. Pretty much the only rule for rookies on the blue team is, "Don't kill the leader". That's me.

Sister: That's it?

Church: That's it.

Sister: Sounds easy.

Church: Yeah, well, we're still waiting for someone to follow that rule.

December 28, 2007: More Red vs. Blue...

Church: What is Vic's number?

Doc: What for?

Church: For reinforcements. Wait -- unless you've had, like, specialized combat training in the last ten minutes?

Doc: Uh, nope!

Church: Then yeah, reinforcements.

January 4, 2008: My friend Jack convinced me to read the Harry Dresden books (by Jim Butcher).

Have you ever been approached by a grim-looking man, carrying a naked sword with a blade about ten miles long in his hand, in the middle of the night, beneath the stars on the shores of Lake Michigan? If you have, seek professional help.

January 11, 2008: I have recently discovered (and I am currently obsessed with) Battlestar Galactica.

[Commander Adama and Billy are going to make peace with President Roslin.]

Billy: I still don't think this is a very good idea, Commander. The last time she saw me she wasn't too happy with me.

Adama: She trust you. Values your counsel. She'll listen to you.

Billy: I doubt that very much. I'm her assistant. She doesn't put any more stock in what I say than --

Adama: She thinks you'll be president one day.

Billy: Excuse me?

Adama: That's what she said to me once. That you remind her of President Adar when he ran for his first office.

Billy: I don't really know how to respond to that, sir.

Adama: Don't let it go to your head. Adar was a moron.

January 18, 2008: Lest you think that BSG has replaced Farscape in my heart, here's a quote from the awesomely-titled episode "Hot to Katratzi".

Rygel: This is madness.

Crichton: Could be genius, Sparky. You know, there's a very fine line between the two.

Rygel: Geniuses make plans.

Aeryn: We're going to walk into the most heavily guarded base in the Scarran Empire, start a civil war, and walk out with Scorpius. What part of that do you not understand?

Amazing!

For the first time since I started watching The Amazing Race, I like all three of the final teams.

Woe Is Me

The Thai restaurant next door to my apartment building has gone out of business! I'm very sad. It so convenient! And they had this great dish called "ultimate fried rice" which was a curry-spiced fried rice with chicken, beef, pork, and shrimp in it. It was yummy.

It didn't find out until after I'd looked at their take-out menu and decided what to order. Since I had a hankering for sweet & sour chicken, I decided to find a different restaurant. I had a vague recollection of a Chinese restaurant a mile or two up the road, so I got in my car and drove to where I thought it was. It was there, but they only seem to have two parking spaces! There might have been more, but they weren't clearly marked, so I drove away. I hate places without adequate parking.

I headed back towards home. A few blocks away from my apartment building is a teriyaki/sushi place. I don't like teriyaki and I wasn't in the mood for sushi, but I decided to give it a try. Luckily it was one of those generalized Asian food places, and I was able to get my sweet & sour chicken. (And some chicken yakisoba -- yum!)

It's a little further away than the Thai place, but at least I found a restaurant I like nearby. Heck, in the summer (when it's not dark out), I could even walk there!
