Hey, Who Turned Out the Lights?

I managed to keep my power last Wednesday, but when I came home from work last night, I found a sign from the building manager on the building bulletin board saying "power will be restored by 4 pm". Since it was after 7 pm, and the lights in the stairway were out, my first thought was, "Uh-oh."

When I went up to my apartment, there was no power. I called the power company and there were several messages on their reported power outage list, but my building wasn't in any of the areas. I reported my outage and dug out my candles and flashlights (again).

Around 9 pm, my mom called to say that the news said all the power in my area had been restored. I called the power company again, and this time I talked to a real person. The very nice lady who answered told me that the news was very, very wrong, and they were still working to restore power. She said that most recent report she had said that power would be restored between midnight and 2 am.

I went to bed around 10:30. I woke up at 1 am and realized that my bathroom fan (which I had left switched on) was running. I also realized that my living room light (which I had also left switched on) was not.

My bedroom clock indicated that power had been back for a half-hour, which meant that power had come back on around 12:30 am.

I called the power company again, spoke to another very nice lady, and she entered my partial power outage into the system. I went back to bed.

Around 5:30 this morning I woke up and realized that the power in my bedroom was out. Again. I called the electric company and listened to their messages. This time they reported a second power outage, starting at 12:49 am.

So, I'm guessing that I had full power last night for a whopping 20 minutes: from 12:30 am to 12:50 am! But I slept though it -- silly me!

Anyway, the message said that they estimated the power would be back on by 6 am.

Around 6:30, the power for my entire apartment returned. I dragged myself out of bed again to check the food in my fridge and freezer. (Since, other than that 20 minutes, I had been without power for 17 hours, I was concerned about my food.) Luckily, everything seemed chilled, so I went back to bed. At 8 am I got up and went to work.

Since there were two outages last night, that makes a total of four in the last three weeks!

If you place a cheap thermometer in your fridge and freezer, you'll have a better idea of the condition of your food.

PS Thanks for your assistance, again. I did make my connections last night, and rode my scheduled flights, but the second plane was late, so I arrive home after midnight. And talked till 1:30AM!
