Katarina Witt
I loved Katarina Witt in the late 1980's. She was such a beautiful skater. Tonight's "Nine for IX" documentary was about her and her role as the face of East Germany. It's called "The Diplomat" and it's very good:
It was wonderful to see clips of her skating, and it was shocking to discover the pressure she was under to win gold in 1988: After winning gold in 1984, she petitioned the government to let her turn pro. They told that they would consider it if -- and only if -- she won gold again in 1988.
And she did.
