Quote of the Day: Kevin Pelton

Kevin Pelton used to work for the Storm as a statistician; now he works for ESPN. This is from his blog post about last night's game:

IN WHICH BRITTNEY GRINER MAKES ME FEAR FOR MY LIFE

The baseline press table at KeyArena is located close enough to the court that reporters sitting there must stay alert. Usually, that means catching a couple of stray rebounds per season. (One fellow writer claims he’s putting up a shot when he gets the ball.) Nothing that has happened during the dozens of games I’ve sat there prepared for me for my experience in the fourth quarter tonight, when Griner couldn’t corral a pass in transition and headed full speed directly at me.

With visions of the time Shaquille O’Neal dove over the press table for a loose ball (breaking a reporter’s laptop) flooding my consciousness, Griner managed to pull up in time to avoid a collision. But when she collected the ball, she slammed it off the padded top of the table directly in front of me, bouncing it several rows back into the crowd.

The KONG broadcast captured the whole sequence — thanks to Storm play-by-play broadcaster Dick Fain for the shoutout and the concern for my well-being — but sadly does not reflect the immense terror I felt throughout the sequence.
