Elite Eight Preview

From ESPN.

One of the three ESPN commentators predicts Gonzaga to beat Stanford; all three predict UConn will beat Duke.

In the discussion of the Baylor/Texas A&M game, commentator Graham Hays wrote: "It's a good rule of thumb in the NCAA tournament to pick the team that has the services of the best player on the court (see: Vandersloot, Courtney in the first three rounds)."

Did you notice that the women's teams seem to drop off faster (in quality) than the men's? The women's Elite 8 are all 1 or 2 seeds except for Gonzaga. The men's Final 4 are 3, 4, 8, and 11 seeds. (And the 11 seed (VCU) played their way in and should have been a 16 seed. )

I don't know that that's always the case, but in general I do think there's a pretty big talent drop-off in women's basketball. There are the perennial big time teams (UConn, Tennesse, and Stanford), and there are a bunch of sometimes great, usually good teams (Baylor, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, etc.), and there's everybody else. But you have to remember that NCAA women's basketball has only existed for thirty years. They have some catching up to do!
