Quote of the Day: John Walters
From The Same River Twice:
[Villanova coach Harry] Perretta has seen it all. The best player he ever coached, Shelley Pennefather, is now a cloistered nun. Villanova's career scoring and rebounder leader, Pennefather won the 1987 Wade Trophy, which is given to the nation's top collegiate female player. She was a three-time Big East Player of he Year. Today she lives in an abbey in Alexandria, Virginia.
In 1991 Pennefather, now known as Sister Rose Marie, entered the order of the Poor Clare nuns, taking vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and enclosure. She has virtually no contact with the secular world. Once a year she is permitted to have visitors but can only talk to them from across a screened partition.
The first time Perretta visited Sister Rose Marie, in 1991, the Wildcats were in the midst of an exasperating 11-17 season. Cloistered life was looking good to him. "I'm coming over the wall!" he cried.
"Maybe," said Sister Rose Marie, who may have also taken a vow of sarcasm, "God meant for you to be a mediocre basketball coach."
