Uhura

It's easy for me to look back at the original Star Trek and forget how revolutionary it really was. All I can see are the bad special effects, the dreadful "acting" from William Shatner, and the slow-moving plots.

But....

An article like this reminds me that it really was important.

(And maybe I'm just PMS-ing, but I teared up a bit....)

I agree, that was a moving story. Less controversial but equally novel at the time was George Takei as Sulu. Before him, I recall a Chinese cook on Bonanza, but I don't recall any other Asians on TV. Maybe some 1960's TV experts (I am not one) can remember others. Not long after Uhura's part came about, Diahann Carrol (a black woman) held the leading role in a show called "Julia". Several black men showed up on TV at about that time, but the most well known is undoubtedly Bill Cosby.
