ORCA

I got my ORCA pass today! I'm very excited.

Sometimes I buy a monthly bus pass, and sometimes it's cheaper to pay cash so I don't. The ORCA pass will function as both. And if I buy a $1.75 pass, but take a $2.00 ride, it'll charge me 25ยข for the ride. It's going to be awesome!

Assuming, of course, that the system works the way they say it will...

Is it a debit card? That is, do you have to have a cash balance in their account to use the ORCA card? If you add money, I am guessing that the machine on the bus will update the balance on your card the next time you board a bus. How does that work, and what makes you think that will be reliable? I'd suggest you begin by carrying the correct change in case the ORCA pass does not work.

It can function as a "debit card" (they call it an "e-purse") or as a regular bus pass, depending on what you buy. Or both!

I do plan on carrying back-up cash -- I always do, even when I buy a monthly pass.

I've been told that if the machine doesn't work, you get a free ride. That's been true of the old machines, too.

A "free" ride if the machine doesn't work?

Ain't socialism grand!!!

Well, if the cash-accepting machine is broken, what can the bus driver do?
