Ta-da!
I re-installed my OS and ta da! I can click! I can drag! I can drop!
You don't realize how much you miss this these things until you can't do them.
I still have to update (a two-part process) but still! Success.

As a coda to the story: Doing the upgrades took way longer than I expected. But I was successful!
I think I'm going to download a "housekeeping" program. From what I've read, that should help prevent future problems.
